Defensive Coordinator?

Submitted by nowayguy on

I haven't heard any rumblings about who Michigan is looking at but I'm wondering who you'll want to see get hired for DC.

Randy Shannon seems like the obvious choice at this time after he was not chosen for the DC position at Texas. His resume is absolutely incredible as his time at DC consisted of top ten defenses every year outside of 2004 (the defense finished 28th that year) and he has coached some top notch defensive players now in the NFL. The only real question is whether or not he can coach a group like Michigan. We know he can handle high level talent but it remains to be seen how he deals with a shortage of great players.

So let's hear your choices and please don't say Scott Shafer, it's not happening.

You know, he might not be the sexy hire that everyone wanted, but he's going to be a great coach. Any one who knows him or has played for him will tell you that. If you continue whining about it you are no better than the other sect of the fanbase that ran Rodriguez out of town. He's hired and there is nothing you can do about it short of sabotaging him like the Freep. So, I suggest you get on board and start being a little more optimistic about the team.

"Jon Hoke's defenses at Florida were the worst in Spurrier's tenure at the Swamp"

I was not sure if this statement was true or not so I looked up Floridas total defense during Hokes tenure. They were ranked 30th his first year and fell to 42nd in 2000 but then in 2001 they climbed to #9 in total defense. Unfortunately, I was unable to find the rankings before his tenure when Stoops was DC. The defense really fell off in 2002-2004 (ranked 25th, 51st, 42nd) before jumping back up to #9 in 2005. Regardless, it appears that Hoke can field a top 10 D.

Chuck Heater would be my first choice as well.  He has been a recruiting coordinator in the past, was kinda screwed in Florida but was the Assist. DC for years, and has been coaching for many years ( I believe he started 2 years after he graduated from Michigan)

A 0% chance Shannon is hired.

Let me be clear - Hoke seems like a nice guy.  I like him, and I support him.

But this AD's office couldn't have been clearer regarding this "national search" -  connections are a must (either to UM, or now, probably, to Hoke), and I don't expect Hoke to go too far out of his network to grab a coordinator.

There's a huge list of candidates just from Michigan.

Vance Bedford (DC at Louisville)
Teryl Austin (DC at Florida, unemployed)
Greg Mattison (DC at Baltimore)
Chuck Heater (DB Coach everywhere, unemployed)
Trgovac(DL at Green Bay)

There are a few others but I think these are the possible candidates. I think we'll end up with Teryl Austin. No one has too much experience as a DC other than Mattison, but I don't think we'll be able to pull him. Teryl is young and managed to maintain a top defense in the SEC this year. He also coached with Hoke for a few years at Michigan, so they know each other pretty well.

Heater would be a good option, but he's almost 60. Maybe that's a good thing because when he retires, the next DC will be the heir-apparent for when Hoke retires. He's also a great recruiter and has more experience than Austin.

Trgovac would be a good hire because he can coach the DL as well. 3 of the guys above are DB coaches and I don't think we'll get the other. Pull in Trgovac and then get Chuck Heater as a DB coach and RC.

Those are my options. I see no real reason to give the job to someone who hasn't coached at Michigan, at least for some time, when we have a short list of great candidates right here.

Mark Stoops is making 400,000 right now at FSU.  Kids are GIVING BOOSTERS $100 handshakes to play for him.  I say we appeal to his sense of greed and offer him $1 less than Hoke to be our next DC(hell, maybe more than that off the books).  He is only 43.  Let him know the job is his when Hoke retires.

I've thought about something like this too, but Hoke won't retire for probably at least 10 years. If our defenses are as good as they are supposed to be, then whomever we hire for DC won't be here in 10 years. I think our best bet is to hire a great DC and then tell the next DC that they will be the heir to the throne.

1.  Shannon.  Obviouslty

2.  Trgovac.  People need to also remember that he was defensive line coach with the Panthers (helped develop Peppers) and the defensive coordinator there from 2003-2008.  They were a pretty darn good defense.

3.  Heater.
