Defensive Coordinator Rumors

Submitted by MGoShoe on

FWIW:

TomDienhart Brady Hoke may consider hiring ex-Florida DC Teryl Austin and/or Baltimore Ravens DC Greg Mattison, according to Detroit Free Press.

If Hoke continues coaching his defensive linemen, and he reportedly would be bringing linebackers coach Mark Smith with him, that would leave the defensive secondary and the defensive coordinator spot.

He could look at coaches from his past to help fill the defensive coordinator role, including former U-M assistant Teryl Austin, who worked with Hoke at U-M in 1999-2002.

Another coach with ties to Hoke is Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison.

Not much more to the story than what was block quoted, so it's hard to know if this is just Snyder throwing out names of defensive coaches Hoke previously worked with at Michigan, or something more.

DGDestroys mentioned that the buzz was with Mattison in this thread earlier today, so H/T to him.

I would be happy bringing in Greg Mattison.  I would think he should be able to recruit, given his NFL ties.  I just hope a hire is made, soon.

The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) only forbids age discrimination against people who are age 40 or older. It does not protect workers under the age of 40, although some states do have laws that protect younger workers from age discrimination.

I must be getting old.

If Michigan was an NFL team, I would agree with you, but the college game is different.

DC has to have enough energy to travel all across the country at the drop of the hat and have to relate to 17 year old kids. If you are a DC in NFL, you can put the hours in the tape room which is much easier for 60+ old guys.

You want younger guys with lots of energy as your coordinator.

I highly disagree. There are occasions that it is  easier for a much older coach with vast amounts of experience to relate to the younger player than it is for a coach who is just 15 or 20 years older.  Making this broad generalization is stupid and dangerous. Hire the guy for DC who (1) wants to be here, (2) can make good in-game and pre-game decisions and adjustments and (3) can recruit his tail off for Michigan.  Things like age shouldnt come into play for a coordinator job, its not like he his being hired to be DC and coach-in-waiting.

Try reading the box score. Baltimore gave up only 5.1 yards per attempt. That is a pretty good number. Problem is, Flacco was held to 2.6 ypa. You don't win many games when you have a -2.5 ypa differential.

The actual point total in the game had little to do with the quality of the offenses. That happens.

Just Snyder name-dropping people previously associated with Hoke.  No suggestion anywhere that they are names he's actually considering.

Looks like little more than space filler.

would Greg Mattison really give up a DC job with one of the top defenses in the NFL to be the DC at Michigan? Hard to believe, but I'd take it if it's true...  though it makes me nervous to have a DC named GREG.
