Defensive Coordinator Rumors
FWIW:
TomDienhart Brady Hoke may consider hiring ex-Florida DC Teryl Austin and/or Baltimore Ravens DC Greg Mattison, according to Detroit Free Press.
If Hoke continues coaching his defensive linemen, and he reportedly would be bringing linebackers coach Mark Smith with him, that would leave the defensive secondary and the defensive coordinator spot.
He could look at coaches from his past to help fill the defensive coordinator role, including former U-M assistant Teryl Austin, who worked with Hoke at U-M in 1999-2002.
Another coach with ties to Hoke is Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison.

I really see nothing wrong with it.

we'd end up calling him GERG out of habit.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:33 PM ^
I thought he burned a bridge or two when he left for ND..

Some folks at Michigan are ready to get over things, especially when some guy "thought" it happened.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:33 PM ^
He's available right now. You would think that if he were the guy, they would have hired him by now. So I'm thinking Hoke would prefer someone different. But if it were possible to get Austin for DBs (again, he's jobless right now) that would be great for recruiting--especially if we get an NFL guy.

That's what we said about Hoke.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:37 PM ^
......most important qualification is that it must be anupgrade from GERG. That would actually include about 99% of the human race though.
So, someone that hascoached some good defense in their day, like Mattison, would be a treat here.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:43 PM ^
reports and online speculation, it appears that the most important qualification is that the DC have Michigan ties. Why get the best DC available (whomever that might be) when someone with UM ties could be persuaded to come back?

You are a "Natural" bitcher.

...gonna happen.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:41 PM ^
Seriously doubt its going to be Shannon!
January 17th, 2011 at 9:39 PM ^
I really hope for recruiting sake that we have a DC by friday. Otherwise we wont be selling the totally package of types of schemes and how a defensive recruit will be used! I am all in for Teryl Austin!
January 17th, 2011 at 9:39 PM ^
why would we hire a guy "by now." we have to let these guys breath... to bring out their tannins.. think about the tannins!!
January 17th, 2011 at 9:41 PM ^
The Ravens coordinator?
I just had a heart attack. Of course, he has TONS of talent @ the Ravens, but we can get that new talent now. Kenny Demens..... I'm in awe at the thought of a Demens-Ray Lewis crossover machine beast.

If Austin were the guy, I feel like he would have been hired by now.
I don't see why Mattison would give up his NFL DC job for a college DC job, but whatever. I hope he does because he seems to know what he's doing and telling kids that he coached Ray Lewis, Suggs, and Ed Reed would probably go a long way in recruiting.
I still think it's going to be a guy we're not discussing, though.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:56 PM ^
...unless he's the backup plan. You very well may be right about it being someone that hasn't been discussed here.
Regardless, I have to think an announcement is imminent (by Wed).
January 17th, 2011 at 10:03 PM ^
Magnus - my traditional train of thought would tell me to agree. However, after seeing how the head coach serach went, the time it took, and the fact that we got the guy we all "expected" to get, I am not sure I would agree.
With that said, what other names are out there, that we are not mentioning?
January 17th, 2011 at 10:06 PM ^
Not to be snide, but there are hundreds of other names out there that we're not discussing. I really have no idea. I just think that if it was any of the guys mentioned so frequently (Trgovac, Austin, Mattison), it would have been announced by now.
January 17th, 2011 at 10:13 PM ^
Your logic is correct, but Hoke was also mentioned early and frequently. And we all see what happened with that!
January 17th, 2011 at 10:16 PM ^
Fair enough. You are most likey correct on that it would be a done deal if it were one of those names. I was just curious if there were any names being thrown around that I havent heard. I will just sit back, and enjoy the show.
January 17th, 2011 at 10:46 PM ^
Visit, meet the new coach, etc. Really the only coaches this rules out are those currently coaching in the NFL playoffs.
January 17th, 2011 at 11:33 PM ^
I still think Hoke is waiting to talk to his brother.
January 17th, 2011 at 10:05 PM ^
But this sounds very very similar to the head coaching discussion, doesn't it?
January 17th, 2011 at 10:13 PM ^
Yeah, it does...
The only way it makes sense, IMO, is if Mike Trgovac doesn't want to distract himself from making a run at the Super Bowl with the Packers. I don't really think a DL coach's future would mess up a team's chemistry, but whatev.
January 17th, 2011 at 10:01 PM ^
I'm sort of in the thinking that we'd have Austin right now if we wanted him. Or they're taking just as long as they did with the HC search to feel out the market, because this is kind of similar to what I thought about Hoke.
January 17th, 2011 at 10:03 PM ^
Some random PSU fan posted on GBW's free board earlier today that Hoke has asked to talk to Tom Bradley FWIW.
January 17th, 2011 at 10:09 PM ^
I really can't believe corwin brown isn't being talked to for DC, is he not thought that high of in ann arbor?
January 17th, 2011 at 10:19 PM ^
The mods at Rivals said that Corwin Brown's name hasn't popped up anywhere...
...except message boards.
He did say some unflattering things about Michigan, but then again...what ex-Michigan coach hasn't burned a bridge in some way or another?
January 17th, 2011 at 11:30 PM ^
What did he say and when?

January 17th, 2011 at 11:30 PM ^
Enough with English already. Dude's a loser.
January 17th, 2011 at 11:35 PM ^
That's a little too harsh.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:29 AM ^
Have you seen what he's done since leaving UM?
I'd say it's accurate.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:41 AM ^
English has failed to make a perennial loser into a winner.
That doesn't mean English himself is a loser.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:49 AM ^
The worst decision RE ever made was to take the EMU job.
January 17th, 2011 at 11:29 PM ^
We've seen Corwin as a college DC before. It was ... less than impressive.
January 17th, 2011 at 10:17 PM ^
I would absolutely love Mattison. But would he leave Baltimore, which is a pretty sweet gig, to come back to Michigan?
January 17th, 2011 at 10:48 PM ^
That is all.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:09 AM ^
and she agrees with you.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:11 AM ^
I have only visited on a couple of occasions, but my brother-in-law and sister lived there for a couple years and hated it.
January 17th, 2011 at 10:22 PM ^
if he would come, however, is doubtful.
I'm intrigued by Corwin Brown. But really, just pick someone and get the show on the road.
January 17th, 2011 at 10:23 PM ^
but I'll have to see their hair before I can accept any decisions.
January 17th, 2011 at 10:31 PM ^
Mattison was Michigan's DC and left to become Notre Dame's DC. That should disqualify him . He's not a Michigan man.
January 17th, 2011 at 11:22 PM ^
I had the opportunity to spend some time with the Mattison family a little bit the summer before he took the ND job, and my dad ran into his wife in Ann Arbor shortly after he took it.
It was clear both before and after that there was no one who loved Michigan more than Greg Mattison and the Mattison family. Period. They loved Ann Arbor, they loved being a part of our program, but the Notre Dame offer (both financially and what it would provide for Greg's family) was just too much to pass up. His daughter played sports at ND, and he ended up getting to coach his son at Florida.
In the coaching world, when you're an assistant coach, when you probably don't have too much chance or ambition to jump to being a head coach, you tend to take job offers that are good for your family. Yeah, it was Notre Dame, but it was a lateral move that provided more. So, even though the timing was a bit bad, I don't particularly blame Greg Mattison for going to South Bend, nor do I particularly hold it against him. He's a great coach, and I think he'd be a great fit here again.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:32 PM ^
All your points about Mattison are duelly noted,HOWEVER Mattison turned his back on Carr and what he was trying to build as a new coach, He left for the same position with one of our rivals. I guess that slogan "Those who stay will be champions" didn't really resonate with him. He left for all those reasons you gave and might have been the right decision for him at the time , but shouldn't be aloud to come back again. Would Bo hire Frieder back?
January 18th, 2011 at 10:05 AM ^
Negged for being serious while using the term, "Michigan Man."
January 18th, 2011 at 6:17 PM ^
A bit of sarcasm with using that term Michigan Man. It has been drum beated against RR so I mentioned it about Mattison. RR left his alma mater and a secure HC position at West Virginia because Michigan called. He gave up alot. He wasn't regarded as a "Michigan Man" by some whatever he did and how badly he wanted to stay as coach. How silly some of you Mich fans are. Mattison turned his back on Carr, makes a lateral move to one of our rivals and you give him a pass. Lets be consistant . Mattison is NOT a Michigan Man.
