Defending ND

Submitted by bklein09 on
I am wondering what defensive philosophy Michigan will take next week when defending against the ND offense? Obviously, the passing game is the primary concern. My personal opinion is that we should avoid the big play at all costs. I know this sounds like an extremely obvious point to make, but what I am saying is that we should play defense in a way that will give ND the underneath passes and runs in order to prevent anything going for over ten yards or so. I know to some of you this may sound incredibly stupid and may mean a long and infuriating game where Jimmah picks us apart. But there are a couple of reasons why I think this is the best strategy in for this game. First of all, we need to protect the weakest part of our defense. We do this by giving the receivers a little extra cushion and by getting pressure with our front four (ie not having to blitz that often). The strength of our D is the front seven, and we have to put the game on their shoulders. Secondly, I want to see if ND can beat us with a balanced attack of running and short passes. By making them take the underneath stuff, it puts a lot of pressure on them to be mistake free over and over again. One bad pass, a sack, or a big hit on the running back and we can make them pay big time. I am basically saying that Michigan needs to play a bend don't break style next Saturday. I think that Notre Dame is much improved offensively from last year, but I still think that they will susceptible to some mistakes if we make them earn every yard they get, rather than letting their big WRs get past our secondary on one play for 6. This could make for a record day for Jimmah and a a good number of us fans ripping our hair out strand by strand, but I personally feel it is the best option for this game. Let me know what you think!

getting to Clausen and bringing back some memories of the last couple of years. It would be huge if the line could get into his head a bit at the beginning of the game. I'll also throw out that I hope we don't get called for 800 pass interference penalties tomorrow, last year we were getting hosed on those calls.

I think we have to be aggressive. The depth on the D-line is thin, and sitting there and rushing the front four and protecting the secondary is going to lead to an ineffective pass rush if they can't get off the field. Instead, you dial up different blitzes and put pressure on Clausen early so he gets happy feet. He can be rattled, but I think you're setting yourself up for failure if we sit back and just try to get pressure with our front four. Just my opinion, and I'm curious to see what others say as well. Go Blue!

I thought this thread was going to be a defense of Charlie W as a coach and why the Irish are better than people think (other than Lou Holtz). Thankfully I was wrong.

If we cover the deep ball REALLY well and make Tate and Floyd come across the middle, we can light them up a few times and get in theirs heads. Let Death Roh and BG go crazy and that would be a great start.

Donavan Warren to shadow Michael Floyd all day long. That means, if healthy, that Cissoko and company will have to contend with Tate. Our corners have the ability to play man against these receivers, whether they actually show up and do it is the question. IMO, the most important defensive players in this next game are Woolfork and Warren. If they play up to their capacity, we will win this game.
