I'm not saying the guy's going to be great or that MSU's offense won't lose something this coming season, I'm just saying that it doesn't make a lot of sense to be out-right dismissive of him.

also, when you take out the little sisters of the poor and only look at big ten schools and bowl games, he's a sub-40% passer.

He played against Alabama and has seen the field against Big Ten opponents, although in a very limited capacity.

Sorry, but there is no way that I will ever agree that making a player study and take classes for an entire year on an athletic scholarship for free is "screwing" him.

This is more BS.  It's bad enough when the media tries to prop up MSU, but it's even worse when even the NCAA does it by allowing them to sign a de facto free agent for immediate play.  The only way they are going to keep transfers from looking like free agent day in the NFL is to make everyone sit out a year when they transfer, regardless of situation.

They need to do away with the loophole for Arnett, and they need to do away with the loophole for people who have graduated.  Give them a sixth year if neccessary, and let them take an extra year of free classes.  My guess is that there are a lot of people right here on mgoblog who would take a free year of school and not see it as being "screwed."

You may want to read about Arnett and his very sick father before judging him. Multiple heart attacks and surgeries the past year certainly qualify as hardship, especially if Arnett needs to pay bills by making it to the NFL as fast as he can. I'm sure you would be crying bloody murder if some entity potentially blocked you from providing for your family.

How horrible for the NCAA to consider family hardships. I guess the only thing worse is rewarding students who graduate. This is particularly funny given how much criticism we hear about the NCAA being unfair to the players.

There would essentially be no graduate student transfers if not for the waiver rule. Schools are going to be very reluctant to tie up a scholarship for two years for a player who can only play the second. Arnett was not exactly a free agent. He was only going to get his waiver by transferring to a school close to home. And he did transfer without knowing whether it would be granted.

I would.  I'd be happy to have him, but I'd still say the rule is dumb.

I don't think the part about his father should matter.  He's moving back to Michigan to be close to his dad, which the NCAA is saying is perfectly fine.  Whether or not he's on the field this fall has nothing to do with his ability to be closer to his dad.  I just don't see how those things have anything to do with each other.

It sounds douche-like because the same can be said about the WR we have coming in after this year too.  Just because a QB hasn't started games, doesn't mean he's going to be bad.  He has sat behind maybe the best QB Sparty has had, so him not seeing the field has more to do with Cousins than with Maxwell.

Maxwell should be a solid QB.  I promise we would have recruited him hard had Hoke been around back then.

says J.T. Floyd. Seriously though, good for him. I would have some choice words for the NCAA if they punished a kid for moving home to be closer to his ailing father.

If he hadn't transferred right after his WR coach left, there probably wouldn't have been any question in the NCAA's mind or this long delay in a decision.  As I understand it his dad wasn't in great shape when he went to UT in the first place, so maybe it looked slightly fishy to them.  But only slightly -- I mean, it isn't like the guy wasn't playing there, and maybe he realized that being closer to home mattered more than it did when he made his initial decision.  When there's no tampering and a valid non-football reason for the transfer I'm generally in favor of letting these guys be eligible right away.

Along with a relatively liberal granting of those waivers though I'd hope the NCAA would utterly annihilate any program caught tampering to make sure that kind of shenanigans doesn't happen.

He wanted to be closer to his father and he was able to transfer to a major conference school despite Dooley's sinister plan.  That's a victory.  Why should he be able to play immediately considering he had knowledge of his father's health when he chose to leave state a year ago.  I know nothing about his father's health, but if his father's heath is rapidly deteriorating wouldn't a year away from the travel team give him more opportunities to visit Saginaw on the weekends?

I do acknowledge the obvious counter argument: His father wants to see him play while he is still healthy enough to do so.  And for the record, I have no issue with Arnett being eligible.  I'm just saying that it wouldn't be a total injustice if the NCAA didn't grant his waiver because I can see plenty of advantages to sitting a year and abiding by the NCAA protocol.

Would have had room for him in the Winter.  I'm not sure how much the coaching staff was really looking at him after getting an initial reaction on where he stood.  I think they inquired and determined they had bigger priorities.

Sometimes fans of teams where glasses colored similarily to the team colors.  In this case, some Michigan fans wore some color glasses between blinding highlighter yellow and kind of an orange-yellow color, and came to the conclusion that Michigan didn't have scholies available.  This then quickly spread, and other fans generally assumed (in no malevolent way) the other fans (sadly, usually the loudest fans are the most ignorant) saying this were correct.  This happens with all fan-bases, but probably at least half the time is more wishful thinking then reality.

I'm not sure if Michigan fully pursued Arnett or not.  But it appears pretty clear that there were scholarships available.  I think Arnett liked State more for whatever reason, regardless, and that's fine if that's where he feels comfortable.

I don't have the numbers available in front of me right now, but I don't believe it had anything to do with homer-ism. We were at the 85 limit if I recall correctly. The seniors hadn't left, Khoury, Cox, and Robinson hadn't left and Stonum was on the team. Plus we had 3 early enrolles. We literally didn't have a scholly at that time; we were at the 85 limit. Now fast forward, and we're now sitting at 79.

Plus I also remember some time ago what when Arnett was talking about the reasons he didn't choose UM, via an interview or twitter, he said a reason was becasue, "Denard's gonna Denard."

Does anyone else remember this or am I just crazy? (I'm thinking the latter as well)

The same reason the really big receiver recruits keep looking elsewhere. Kids understandably want to see the actual offense they'll be getting into and they have to feel comfortable with it.  We can't deliver part 1 right now and part 2 is a matter of what point in a game they choose to watch.

Recruiting receivers will be a lot easier once the program is fully transitioned to pro-style.

when baggett was let go (i.e., taking the fall for some potential recruiting snafu) i think arnett was gone regardless of what kind of waiver he was going to get.  i am glad for him regardless of his motivation - dooley is a first order prick.  guy was born on third and he thinks he hit a triple.
