DCC: Greg Jackson

Submitted by Olaf on

We need continuity and Greg has been around the game for a long time. Promote Chris Partridge to LB coach and give his old job to Devin Bush Sr. I feel this is the optimal solution.

Which elite NFL DB coach do you replace him with?

This move may be deserved (I have a hunch Jackson could be a superb DC one day) but if it decreases the impressive "over-qualified-ness" of the coaching staff (it's single greatest strength and distinguishing characteristic) then it's a bad move.

And since Jackson would at best be qualified for DC and his replacement presumably something less than "elite NFL DB coach," it's pretty obviously a bad move for the staff as a whole.

It almost certainly makes our coaching staff weaker than it was this year. Perhaps by a fair amount. Valuing continuity over quality, isn't that something we criticized Hoke for? Not to mention RR and Carr.

Here's a simple question. If we're looking to promote a position coach to DC, with the corresponding bump in salary, shouldn't we be able to attract practically any college coach we wanted? There are some guys with very good resumes we could look at if we went that route.

There is no 100% gurantee we retain Jackson if he is not named defensive coordinator per Sam Webb.

rather than hire someone more qualified. If Durkin wants to make Jackson his DC, you should just be happy for him and let him go. Maybe bring Jackson back after our next DC takes a HC job. That being said, I think our staff has earned some raises or bonus pay.

The previous 3 years as an assistant to the DB coach in SF. Not the resume I expect from a DC Harbaugh could attract, not with the money Michigan is willing to pay.If Harbaugh thinks he is ready and qualified, fine. On paper, that resume is not that of a high level DC candidate.

I'd much rather hire up and coming coaches that other schools are going to want and hope they stay for awhile until the right job opens up. Saban did very well with Kirby Smart, for example. I'd also be happy with some well established coaches that might be content not to pursue HC jobs. I'd take the same approach for our position coaches. I don't think having a staff littered with coaches no one else wanted did us much good. I might avoid someone like Pruitt, only because he's already a candidate for HC jobs.

Was just sitting around waiting for only two different jobs.  He was willing to shoot down anything else because he wanted either Georgia or Alabama.

Jackson being DC isn't a bad move.  Like Webb was saying this morning you could tell with him that he has the "it" factor.  Regardless I am pretty much going to be okay with what Harbaugh picks out.  I'm sure he will just make a rule that no one on his coaching staff is allowed to interveiw during the season, especially while planning during the OSU game week...

I believe I mentioned yesterday that I would love to see Harbaugh's staff become one of those where someone was always ready to "step up" and most new hires are entry level hires, making it easy for his people to better themselves on a regular basis.

Ultimately, though, I am going to be happy with whatever Harbaugh does.  He has a chance to win ten games this season with a team that would have been lucky to win four under the previous staff and AD.  In Harbaugh We Trust...
