Now that his season is over, who thinks Brady's brother, Jon, will give us a look? Even with Mattison, I think it's important we have someone in place to get commits from McClure and Raven (and Countess' confirmation for that matter). Who are the other candidates?
Jon Hoke isn't coming to Michigan.
Do you think we have a shot with Corwin Brown?
(Also realized I'm talking about a coach like a recruit, just go with it).
As long as Michigan has an open DB coach job, we have a shot with Corwin Brown.
Do you really think brown would come back from his position with the patriots to coach the same position at UM?
I think Corwin Brown is currently, like, the "Assistant to the defensive backs coach" or something like that. IIRC, he's not an actual coach.
So to answer your question...maybe.
I didn't see anyone explicitly called out as O or D coordinator. is that accurate?
"assistant to the defensive backs coach" or "assistant defensive backs coach"??
*office reference, anyone?*
that makes more sense then
Anyone? What would that do for recruiting?
Good point and I would say no, but I also wouldn't have believed the Mattison hire. If Corwin wants back into the college game he could very well take this job, "help Michigan", and then move on (i.e. I'm not sure how long Mattison is planning on coaching, and it could be a positive marker for him to turn our secondary around to get another position).
Corn Flakes Brown!
to have Corwin here. You talk about a Michigan Man. wow
You mean the one who told recruits (when he was coaching at ND) that he would have gone to ND over Michigan had he been offered by them?
I'm 100% willing to forgive Brown and I've love to have him back as a DB coach. But I don't forget.
Did Corwin Brown and Mattison overlap at Notre Dame at all?
Brown came after Mattison, IIRC.
Charles Woodson retires after the Super Bowl and comes home to Michigan to coach the DB's.
watching Charles Woodson every sunday but i give it a couple years and he will be done.
His recently signed contract goes til 2015. Maybe then.
I think Charles finishes his contract and goes to Napa Valley where he does some more hands on work with his winery. "21" is a good, but expensive bottle of wine
as DB coach. I would like that too.
I was thinking that exact same thing earlier today. Great minds think alike. Hope that becomes reality down the line. He would be an awesome recruiter.
What about Ty Law? I wonder what he's been up to last few yrs....he was here with Hoke and Mattison if I'm thinking correctly
you DON'T follow him on twitter and badger him with thoughtless tweets?
If he had wanted the DC job, he could have had it. He squashed that and there is NO way he will move from the NFL back to college for the same job. He has numerously stated he is more of an NFL coach than a college coach. Very, very doubtful.
I swear I heard the same argument about our current DC.... Not saying you said it... I think DB set the tone of not speaking to potential coaches until their season is done. Hoke followed that example by not bringing Mattison in until his season was over. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Jon Hoke came to coach DB's... It's not like da bears DB job is the pinnacle of position coaching.... I wouldn't be surprised if he takes the job by Monday or Tuesday....
He doesn't like recruiting. He is not coming here. It has nothing to do with Mattison. That guy is a legend in recruiting, Hoke is not.
My comparison of Mattison was based on the same thing being said about him "he won't leave the NFL to coach the same position". I wasn't saying that he was going to come here because of mattison...
I think I misunderstood your response. My bad. My only gripe with Hoke is the understanding that he doesn't like to recruit. I wouldn't mind him coming in. I just want it to be a Mattison hire and not a "brother hire".
Most people didn't know about the friendship he has with Hoke. It was evident that they worked together, but I had no idea that Mattison thought so highly and cared so much for Hoke.
Sure seems like it. Although, when asked, he said no. He doesn't like to recruit. I wonder who else is available out of the playoff teams.
We still need 2 coaches, I wonder who they are waiting on.
Well, I guess we'll be finding out soon if it was indeed a smoke screen or not.
I agree with this and realize its plausibility, but don't you think this is more of a Mattison hire than a Hoke hire? Maybe not, but I hope it is after seeing this Gerg and Shafer disaster.
But please have a more informative title. I clicked on this thinking we had a DB coach, and now I'm disappointed to see we're still looking for one.
It's going to be Darrell Green.
We need someone young, willing to recruit, and a potential future DC or head coach.
This description screams Corwin Brown.
Its gonna be jon hoke. Brady already asked him if at the end of the season he would come over and he said he would love to. The Bears coaching staff is a nervous wreck wondering if they are going to keep their jobs year in and year out.
Well, if there's anything we've learned over the past several years at Michigan, it's that every job is safe. Just ask Ron English, Erik Campbell, Scott Shafer, Jay Hopson, Rich Rodriguez, Tony Gibson, Bruce Tall, Greg Robinson, Greg Frey, Tony Dews, Calvin Magee, Rod Smith, and Adam Braithwaite.
Did you enjoy the theater?
Your example is well taken, but a brand new staff is likley going to have at least three years of job security. Position coaches will almost certainly be garenteed more than one year, becuase they can blame the old staff for their current deficencies.
Every staff at every school is subject to review at the end of each season (or in the middle of it). There are very few exceptions, save maybe Joe Paterno and some other great coaches.
Scott Shafer was fired after one season.
Jay Hopson was fired after two.
Everyone else was fired after three.
I agree with everything you said, however; barring an absolute disater Hoke will not be fired in less than three years. It would be an unlikely scenerio that would result in him firing his brother quickly.
I think this is a unique situation - one that would provide some security for a DB position coach. No matter the product after the first year, we should see improvment (maybe jjust becuase of player development / maturing). However, Hoke will get at least three years at head coach.... if he can convince his brother to come over, i have a hard time believing that he would quickly get the axe, just my opninion.
While I agree with you, i also think that his brother really does not want to come back to college. It is known (at least I think it is) that he does not like to recruit or that side of the job.
When I look at "the other Hoke" I think that he is much more comfortable coaching professionals and refining their trade, rather than turning a raw prospect into a serviceable player. I could be wrong, but I think some coaches prefer college over pro's, as well as vice versa.
Hoke gets the "Michigan Man exemption:" five years to win nine games. If DB stays that long instead of staying just long enough to build a resume as a "man of action" and subsequently leaving to pursue his politial ambitions, there is no way he will admit he was wrong with this hire.
That's why I hope he really does well; I don't want to be stuck cheering for a shitty team for the next five years, and I've been a Michigan fan way too long to jump ship. If Hoke doesn't get the job done, we're all pretty much fucked.
How long Tater?.......with me it's been since 69
RR did not bring us back to where we wanted to be, and now should Hoke not get the job done we are headed for the boonies for another 3-5 years.
Sure hope Hoke and Mattison and rest get us back to contending for Big 10 championships at the very least. All we can do now is wait and see!
3 years ago when RR was hired. You never know for sure, so we have to wait and see what happens.
you may very well be right, but this is exactly the reason I DON'T want Hoke #2 as the DB coach. The last thing UM needs is the HC's brother to be coaching the Db's (probably the position that needs the most coaching and development at this point). As you stated, they are family and he is likely to get a free pass regardless of how well he does simply because he is his brother.
I can only base this off the relationship I have with my brother (which obviously doesn't correlate 100% to the Hoke's), but I would have a very hard time firing my brother regardless of the job he did. I don't think this is a situation we would want to put our head coach in, but that is just my opinion...
Bingo. It's hard to fire family. Not saying he will do a bad job, but he seems to have a stumbling block that may prevent him from being successful, he doesn't like to recruit.
No, that's not my point at all. My point (in response to an above poster) is that coaches get fired all the time. Part of being a coach at the college/NFL level is not knowing if you'll have a job next year. Those guys I mentioned were all fired in a short amount of time compared people in most careers, and just like Jon Hoke might be concerned about getting fired from the Bears, he wouldn't be safe from getting fired from Michigan, either.
In 2007, I could have responded with "Andy Moeller" and countered you somewhat effectively. Alas, it is no longer 2007.
Where did you hear this? He said publicly that he did not want the job.
I'd be surprised if UM didn't get an established DB coach. Maybe Jay Hoke, but it sounds like he's not interested. Brown would be huge, but however they go they'll need to grab a guy with some experience and (hopefully) a little youngish.
I don't get it.
whose the d line coach?
Some guys named Hoke and Mattison? I hope they're ok.
Actually, its Greg Hoke. Its been confirmed on Twitter...
Instead of negging you, Mattison and Brady Hoke are very well versed in defensive line coaching.
Does that mean we get another O coach? Would love to get a QB coach and some recruiting help on that side.
You're right, I'm not sure on this. I would love to see Lefty come back home.
I'm actually pretty unsure on what coaches we still need. I know its DB, but what else?
No, we've got coaches for WR, TE, OL, and RB, plus Borges (who will likely be the QB coach). That's 5 offensive coaches already, plus Brady Hoke (who probably won't coach a position).
That means there are 4 spots for defense, including the coordinator.
I am not sure we can find a better D line coach than Mattison or Hoke, I know Hoke probably won't coach a position and Mattison has to game plan. Maybe Brian is right, all we need is a guy to really recruit.
Does it seem like we lack a top offensive recruiter. I look at Loeffler and I don't know if he was a good coach, but he seem to have a rep for working with QB's. I remember an interview which Tebow said he visited and thought about Michigan because of Loeffler. It seems we need someone like that for the O. I have no idea about Funk or Ferrigno and I think Brian mentioned that Borges doesn't really recruit. I know we should have a balance in coaches but interested in knowing what others think.
coaching at a smaller school in Ohio or other MAC territory that knows high school coaches and will help with recruiting etc....
Nothing wrong with having some diversity in age and others aspects on the staff.
dodn;t you see Brian's post? We need black coaches.
What is the expected timetable for hiring the last two coaches (DB and DL), anyway? In the next few days?
Who will be the d line coach and DB coach? I really want to know lol
EDIT:Who you guys "think" will be?>
Ty Law? He played in the NFL for 15 years. He has three Super Bowl Rings and played on some great defenses during his career. He, Mattison, and Hoke could sure up this lousy defense in a hurry and put a scare into the conference.
Being a great player does not automatically make you into a good coach.
I would be extremely surprised if Ty Law is even being considered. I don't think he has any coaching experience (i know he works with some NFL corners so I'm not counting that) and it would shock me if they hired someone with no coaching experience to take the job.
I don't know why you are getting negged for that, as this is something that I've thrown out there as well.
Bouje always gets negged, it's tradition and science. Once you add in this comeback from the banhammer without even making an adequate attempt at hiding his identity, he'll get negged for absolutely anything.
I am hoping for Terryl Austin or Corwin Brown - although I don't believe we should expect either of these* guys to get the job as I feel they would have been announced already if they were taking the job.
I think either one of these guys would be another great hire by Hoke. Keeping my fingers crossed that I am wrong and one of them are announced in the next couple of days!
Cornflakes what are you wait for my friend?
