A Day in the Life of Jim Harbaugh

Submitted by alum96 on

Since we've moved up our hopes for Jim Harbaugh from a scientifically accurate 0.49% a month ago to 4.32% today, thought I'd throw this story out from the 49ers website.  I wonder if they are trying to put a happier face on Jim Harbaugh the human. :)  It's a neat piece.  Actually reminds me of Steve Jobs in a way - not only due to the black turtleneck but the way many close to him view him as sort of a total hard ass - but an effective hard ass who is at the top of his profession.

Also this other story was posted 3 weeks ago here, but I glossed over it since our chances of landing Jim had not crossed over the 1% threshold yet but I re-read it yesterday and it made me want to run through a brick wall.  For Tigers fan this is a guy just like Justin Verlander who wants to destroy you even in a game of checkers.  The money quote, from a speech he gave the 49ers pre-season:

"I will be your alarm clock and wake you early," he said. "It can be a great temptation to rest on the field and let the opponent have a play without making him pay for every inch. I must hold his pain where it is. Mine does not matter. ... The punishment I inflict, his fatigue, and that he is up against something that he does not comprehend is everything."

Yeah maybe the pros might scoff at this stuff after 4-5 years but I can only imagine a bunch of 18-22 year olds hearing this attitude from their leader.

Ok back to our regularly scheduled - sigh - reality.

Perhaps a non sequitor, but I was watching the World Series and they were talking about Ned Yost's relationship with Dale Earnhardt.  The money quote was when they were talking about how Ned asked Dale who his friends are in the Nascar field -- answer is "none."  The point being was that he was out to kick all their asses so he didn't want to be friends with any of them.  Kind of harsh, but also the type of competitor that I think Harbaugh is and that I think we need.

I just couldnt see him leaving SF unless forced to.  The pics of him at home, with his kids etc. and his wife from that area, not to mention he is at the very top of the coaching profession lead me to believe that he would not leave that.  It is what it is.

But the (more specifically, his wife) didn’t want to leave the Bay Area, which could put Harbaugh in play for the Raiders job.  One league source tells PFT that Harbaugh would “love” to return to the Raiders, where his non-playing career began in 2002 and 2003 as the team’s quarterbacks coach.

Ultimately, the Raiders could give up a lot less to the 49ers to get Harbaugh than the Buccaneers gave up to get Gruden from the Raiders.  Unless the Raiders can lure Gruden back to Oakland.

It is sort of funny one of the most "hard ass" men in the world of sports is completely beholden to his wife per these reports.  I get not moving but limiting yourself to one other team in the entire NFL seems a bit silly.  If Oakland is his only option due to his wife he better hope young Derek Carr is the real deal because the rest of that team is pretty bad.  The 49ers were more of a team like... well the Wolverines in theory.   There was some talent that just was not well coached.   The Raiders right now are more like Stanford when he got there - a place to start from scratch.  Maybe that's what he wants to do but if  his goal is to win a Super Bowl the Raiders sure don't seem to be the team that is going to get him there anytime soon.  Unless Carr is the next Andrew Luck.  Maybe he is.

Miami actually makes a lot more sense to me - they seem a lot like the 49ers.  An Alex Smith type of QB who could be a lot better with the right coach, and a pretty darn good defense that does not get attention due to the overall record.  Current defensive FEI is 3rd in the league.

Now if he does go to Oakland and does his normal "4 years before he burns out all the NFL players" his wife will have exhausted all options in the Bay area.  But I guess she can demand he go back to Stanford.

I picture the entire Harbaugh clan getting together for the holidays, and John says to Jim: "I'm thinking about taking the Michigan job". And Jim goes, "Hey wait a minute, I saw it first."

Then they start to scuffle, and grandma says, "Now boys, you just settle down."

Then they both grab their cell phones and start dialing our new Athletic Director, trying to get him on the phone so they can apply for the job.

That's what I picture.

but this just looks like an open letter to SF, OAK, MIA saying "I can really be an NFL coach that doesn't eventually alienate everyone". I'm done talking about it (at least until/if Brandon is gone) as there seems to be too much personal life stuff in the way of him coming here. Even if you get past that you'd have to hope he's done in SF and beat out everyone with an open head coaching position in CFB & the NFL. We can hope but we need to collectively face reality and consider legit options while being MUPPETS x 100000000 if he somehow ends up here.

Who needs Harbaugh when we have the "Brandon Difference" (TM)?

Wait until you see what the hours in the film room have created!

This certified super genius does not stop at being a top flight AD and calculating the optimal return on bottled water. He also excells at game planning- as those pesky Spartans are sure to find out soon!
