With the tweets he received from the "fans" of Michigan I guess his getting a little poke back with his new top 4 is kinda funny.

Well played young man, well played.

That OSU and Michigan have a lot in common. And many recruits in the past and recent history have had both Michigan and OSU listed at the top of their lists. I think Michigan fans and the lack of a scholarship have soured Michigan for Dawson, but obviously he liked something about it so it makes sense that he likes OSU too.

He still probably goes to Florida though.

What do you mean lack of a scholarship? He was offered a scholarship, accepted it and committed at first, now  he didn't want it obviously. My only thought process is, is that someone finally told him that Urban Meyer was the coach for the Pouncey brothers because he retweeted about going to Florida to be like them.

I'm just going to go ahead and assume that plenty of eventual Michigan commits have listed SEC schools and OSU in their top lists along with Michigan. Were they all bad fits culturally? Also, what exactly is a good cultural fit for a Michigan athlete, and how do you know so many of them personally so that you are qualified to make statements like that?

You do realize that Charles Woodson considered Ohio, Desmond Howard could have easily been a Buckeye if Bruce hadn't been fired (and he took an official to MSU [because of Nick Saban, no less]), and Denard had us in a top-two with an Urban Meyer coached SEC school, right?

Cultural fit has pretty much nothing to do with a recruits list of top schools.

David Dawson? He has nothing to do with Michigan. I give this a giant MEH. If he ever encounters Michigan again, he'll be laying in the dirt and his team down by 30.

We're gonna be dominating all those teams very soon. I guess he likes being an underdog. It'd be ironic if Pocic flipped from LSU and Dawson committed there.

But he's really starting to bug me. I wish him the best, and hope he finds the right situation for him. But, his constant RT of some stupid fans, claiming they represent Michigan as a whole, is pissing me off quite frankly.

It's rarely* ever appropriate for a grown-ass man to tweet at a 17-year old kid whom he doesn't know. It's not okay to tweet, "Ur awesome i'm so glad ur coming to michigan GO BLUE omg", and it's not okay to tweet, "you suck i hope you tear your ACL and get 6 concussions and die".

If I were a parent of one of these recruits, I would be none too happy about all of these random middle-aged men following my son and trying to strike up conversations with him on Twitter. That shit is not cool.

* One of the exceptions is a recruiting analyst who carries himself professionally (like Aquaman, Ace, et al). If you really want to know what the recruits are upto and which way they're leaning, follow those guys.

I've been biting my tongue for days. I'll hold off on commenting other than to say that it appears as if he's spiting us by listing Ohio. If he does end up picking them I will unleash the fury...

Why do people think they know what's going on inside the mind of a 17-year old kid? No one is privy to his thought process except his family and friends. I'm sure there might be any number of reasons why he would legitimately consider Ohio. We've had plenty of recruiting battles with them that have gone down to the wire. Even kids who eventually ended up on our side gave Ohio a long hard look before they chose the good guys.

If he wants to go to OSU, all the power to him. I just hope we don't start bashing his character and all that like OSU fans did to Kalis.

If he goes to OSU, OSU is getting a very good player. It will suck for any good player to go to OSU, especially one who was committed to us, but if he does end up going there, which I doubt, in the end, it's football, he's done nothing to offend me.

However, he will have hopefully offended our current committs, who he used to wake up every day to and tell "Go Blue"and talk about Team 134 with. I hope those players are offended, and if he does go to OSU, make it their mission every year at "The Game" to show him what a colossal mistake ge made.

I'm sorry, but the endless defenses of Dawson because he's 17 or went through a rough death in the family just don't do it for me at all. After years of following recruiting, I have learned to only get upset about a few things. For instance, Laquon Treadwell does not upset me because all he is doing is making an informed decision. He's never said or done anything disrespectful or purposely misleading of which I am aware.

Dawson, on the other hand, has routinely shown his immaturity throughout the process at the expense of the Michigan fans. Shane Morris, who apparently considers(ed) him a friend, referred to his act as "annoying" in an interview. When other 17 year olds can see it, and go so far as to point it out to a national audience, maybe us grown men can finally accept it as true. He has started multiple twitter frenzies for no other reason than to see the (over)reaction of fans. He has reaffirmed his commitment multiple times to only start another rumor that he's leaving. He has claimed that he only wanted to attend a prestigous camp in Florida, yet now he suddenly wants to commit to that same school. He has potentially hurt our OL class by stringing this whole drama out to a point where few viable options remain when he seemed destined to switch all along.

He has shown zero respect to Michigan or its fans, yet you all feel inclined to defend him because he is young and Michigan fans were nasty to him on Twitter. Well, I think a case can be made that he should have expected some Twitter backlash because the majority of the time he has been committed all he has done is try to incite debate on twitter. I doubt he'd have received nearly as much backlash if it didn't appear so obvious that he has endlessly sought attention and intentional deceived people for months now. 17 or not, he should have expected it, and if he's upset, it's his fault and nobody elses.

Magnus

October 18th, 2012 at 8:22 PM ^

I agree with everything you said...but I still think some of the backlash is unwarranted.

Yeah, we were all more immature when we were 17.  I bet 50-year-olds say the same thing about the days when they were 30.  The bottom line is that, like you said, he's handled this recruiting process poorly.

FrankMurphy

October 18th, 2012 at 8:26 PM ^

Your logic only makes sense if you assume that there's nothing wrong with getting emotionally invested in the non-binding verbal commitment of a 17-year old kid. If he says he wants to come to Michigan, great. If he changes his mind, oh well. At the end of the day, all that matters are the kids whose signed LOIs arrive in Brady Hoke's office on February 6, 2013.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't feel happy when a kid commits or disappointed when a kid decommits, but there's no reason to take it personally either way. Leave the drama to the kids.

October 18th, 2012 at 9:21 PM ^

I do actually agree with you for the most part, and as I stated, I have learned to not take this crap too seriously anymore. The fact that others feel the need to call kids names on twitter is sad, but unfortunately predictable.

He has a twitter handle that I'm assuming has thousands of followers (I don't use twitter) who were mostly Michigan fans. He didn't have to give them access to his twitter feed. He chose to, and he abused it by being pretty immature with the whole medium. These same people were great when he was a Michigan commit because they reacted to everything he did and he got attention. If he couldn't handle the obvious backlash coming, maybe he should have deleted the account. He doesn't need it. I'm positive he could create a new one and follow/get followed by his actual friends without incident. Instead, he sat around and argued with the people. It's like politics, expect to get some hate.

People think it makes them look intelligent and compassionate to try and defend this stuff.  In most cases I'd agree, but this is different.  You list all the ways in which he has basically been selfish and deceitful towards Michigan and other commits who had become his friends.  It shows a deep lack of character imho.

He is mature enough to know how to stir the pot and has done so for a while.  Pot stirrers get a big kick out of themselves when they see what they can do with the strings, especially kids.  What we've seen is a kid jerkin around a bunch of adults; what we're seeing is an adult reaction.  This would be true in any context.

Jeff09

October 18th, 2012 at 9:12 PM ^

All this is accurate and I think he seems immature, especially relative to his peers (take Michael Ferns for instance, not all 17 year olds are total idiots).  HOWEVA, I think the appropriate reaction is a clenched jaw and mostly silence on the part of adult fans.  I never said good luck at those other schools, especially not Ohio, but I'm also not ever going to say something like 'good riddance' or 'fuck him' because he happens to be especially immature.  Move on, let the coaches handle the business that they are so damn good at.

TheGhostofYost

I usually say good luck to decommits, but this kid is increasingly looking like an enormous douchebag.

October 18th, 2012 at 8:18 PM ^

Keep in mind that from a depth standpoint, OSU makes perfect sense.  OSU's offensive line recruiting has been marginal for the last couple of years, both in talent and numbers.  He would likely be a 3 year starter at a minimum based on that alone.  Throw in the fact that OSU is relatively close to home and it sweetens the deal.

I'm not saying he's probably leaning that way.  But there are legitimate reasons for a kid as talented as he is to be interested in OSU once he decommits from Michigan.

FrankMurphy

October 18th, 2012 at 8:57 PM ^

I don't think he's the one who cares too much. The people in this thread who can't conceive of any legitimate reason why Dawson would want to go to Ohio and think he's listing them among his top schools out of spite, they're the ones who care too much.

Summoner10

October 18th, 2012 at 8:21 PM ^

His twitter is now titled "future legend" it used to say "mr. underrated".  Not really a big deal but seeing that coupled with the rumor that it was the florida staff who had to tell the coaching staff that Dawson's eyes were moving to gainesville because apparently dawson didn't have the honor to do it himself sure makes it seem like the kid really thinks he's the "BLEEP".  If his atttiude and ego can change and inflate that much based off arbitrary recruiting rankings and a couple of summer camps... he isn't someone that I would be excited about coming to Michigan.

The Florida notification thing will most likely stay a rumor because the UM staff won't talk about it and I highly doubt Dawson wants to talk about it either, but the more you think about it it makes sense.  Hoke and company didn't just change his committment status they 86'd him.  That heavily implies that something else happened to make them severely sour on him.

It's okay. Look what happened to Seantrel Henderson, if anyone even remembers him. Not saying he's the same, but a lot of the guys that get the attention (and love it) end up having huge expectations put on them which are unattainable.

Kids are entitled to be kids without Internet strangers' criticisms. Having said that, there are some incredibly mature 17 year olds who already have a head start into being productive, respectful adults - Austin Hatch and Michael Ferns to name two. Let's celebrate these guys and the bright futures for them and Michigan. Nothing productive cones out of criticizing other kids on the interwebs.

I've had enough with this lame argument.  When you accept fully paid scholarship offers and you give your committment to a multi million dollar institution some things are demanded of you.  Some things are going to change.  One of those things that's asked is for you to grow up and act like an adult in your dealings with said institution and how you project yourself out into the world.

If you want to just be a regular kid and goof/slack off and act like a fool pay for your own school or go work at taco bell or deliver pizza's.
