David Long Recruiting Update (Video Interview)

Submitted by FutureOfA2 on
Brandon Brown interviewed David Long at the Army All American game this afternoon and I think we can say things are looking optimistic for our chances. Long is a dynamic athlete (top 100 rated player from CA) who recently decommitted from Stanford and is considering Michigan and Washington. Well spoken young man too--would be a great addition while closing out one of the top classes in the nation. https://michigan.n.rivals.com/news/long-feeling-wolverines

Not Lewis, that's an all American. But he can certainly beat out Clark, especially when Clark will be learning the same new system, so he will barely have a mental advantage.

As for Peppers obviously he has to be on the field. If we are facing a spread team Pep can be at Nickel and I think the corners would be Lewis and Long. If we are in a basic 4-3 look Lewis and Peppers would be the corners unless DB moves Peppers up top.

Point is if we run the same 4-2-5 look I think Long starts opposite Lewis, but either way he will get a ton of PT. He's way too talented to keep off the field.

"...not nearly as bad as his rep."

Do people think Clark was bad? I was actually really impressed with him this year. A position switch player, who beat out a guy who's been playing actual CB for a while. He had some really good plays, and even plays in which he got beat, he was usually in good position.

I'm surprised people seem so down on him - if he continues to grow (keep in mind, this was his first season at corner), he's got a pretty high ceiling given his size, speed, and developing skill set.

Brown's text messages means that they are not coming to Michigan.  If they respond to his texts, that means he is.  Works. Every. Time.

Doing interviews with him has to mean something.  Especially this late in the process. . .right?

While not a negative, I'm not sure why that sounded any more positive for UM than UW?  An interview will always seem slanted toward who does the interview.

Very well spoken young man.  His interview indicates he is very high on Michigan.  Would be a great addition to the class.  Here's hoping we send our best closers to the in home and he goes Blue.

I also have not seen his film, but I trust the opinions of Alum96, Magnus, and others who are saying that he would be great get for us and hope he goes Blue.  The one thing I was blown away by was how well spoken he was.  The OP did mention it, but for a 17/18 year old kid, he comes across as down-to-earth, sincere, and very fluid.  After his playing days, I can easily see him in the booth.

it seems Michigan would be the perfect choice for him.  The prospects for playing time are very good here and he'd have a couple ex-NFL secondary guys coaching him - plus HARBAUGH.  But it sounds like distance may not be that important given his interest in Washington.  He's the type of player though that Michigan needs to sign in order to compete with and beat OSU on a regular basis.

And I mean that it all seriousness.  I watch a fair amount of these interviews, not that I put a lot of stock into them, but I do have a strong interest in Michigan and their recruiting, so just want to keep up with what's going on.  Having said that, this kid is really impressive and seems very mature.  Great interview and I certainly hope that he ends up in Maize and Blue.

Landing Rashan Gary and David Long would result in a lockdown defense next year and beyond.  Adding a stud defensive lineman and an outstanding athlete at corner would put this team in position to compete for a NC in the near future.  These are the type of players we need.

I usually try to stay away from the "he's well spoken" shit for obvious reasons, but in the instance, the kid obviously has his head on his shoulders.

Somebody posted a link to his Twitter the other day when Michigan beat Florida (he had some positive things to say), so I read through his timeline a bit. From it, you can definitely tell he's one of those "student of the game" types.

Even beyond the physical talent, he would be a great addition to the locker room.

I really liked the film. Thanks to MoTownGoBlue for posting. He seems to possess some real speed and quickness that should project well for him in college. I also like to see a bit of chippiness in DB's (provided that they have the physical skills to make plays!) and he looks like he has that too. David would be an outstanding addition to our secondary. As some have mentioned, I suppose it is possible he could start as a freshman, but I like what has been happening with many of our recruits lately with the redshirts, giving them an opportunity to get their bearings in the system, develop and grow physically, then come out with guns blazing in year 2. If we keep doing that, which I suspect we will, our roster will be stacked. Go Blue!
