This is pretty good hire, but not really spectacular. Hes a former assistant so he has ties to the program, and most importantly he isnt going anywhere.

Cutcliffe just blew out of Duke after one year. He isn't a douche like Lane but just because Duke has always sucked at football doesn't mean it's OK to pack up and leave after one season because a football school came calling. But on the other hand, who remembers that Gene Chizik did the same thing last year? So maybe all the talking heads indignation over coaches bailing after one season is bullshit. Since Kiffin is a uniquely odious fellow there is all this heat and light. For the other guys like Chizik and Cutcliffe, who really cares?

I keep seeing the Firesign Theater cover and wondering if you (as I was) were actually alive during their early years, or if you are a later listener - incredible that they are still around and have produced a bevy of albums. We used to spend hours re-playing, quoting, and laughing ourselves silly in our misspent youths. Anyway, just curious.

Lane Kiffin led the Volunteers to a highly mediocre 7-6 season after racking up recruiting violations (and if the allegations of the use of succubi hostesses are proven, these could be major), constantly mouthing off to other coaches, and generally disrespecting university traditions. He never showed remorse for his actions. In fact, he boasted about them. Despite this, Tennessee stoutly defended him over and over again. So, Lane Kiffin isn't just a one-and-done. Instead he is a snake who rubbed Tennessee into the ground and then took off for greener pastures (unless USC gets nuked by the NCAA, which is what both of them deserve).

You're right that he wouldn't leave for another job, but I think a lot of UT fans are skeptical about how long he'll be there given that he has had health problems and stepped down at ND a few years ago. Either way - seems like a nice dude

The guy can definitely coach offense. I thought he got a raw deal at Ole Miss after he essentially lifted that program up out of the gutter (oh, the unrealistic expectations of a second-rate program). Not sure he has the forceful personality to recruit against Saban, Miles, Richt, Petrino, and (maybe) Meyer, but a damn good hire on short notice.

Totally agree. Dude showed steady progress at Ole Miss, got them their first 10 win season in awhile, and one losing season later got dumped for Mr. All Flash (no, not Kiffen, his partner in crime, Meat Market-man). He was solid as hell at Ole Miss

I don't think Coach O got a fair shake in Oxford either. He brought in top 20 recruiting classes at a lesser program for three years while Houston Nutt got to coach the top 20 team they turned into as upperclassmen (but Nutt got a bum rap at Arkansas where he overachieved for years...) In short, I hate it when the powers that be at schools with no history of success are disappointed when they don't get more from a coach who is already doing better than they can/should expect. Also, it some times takes time to build a winner.

I have been to Fayetteville. Not exactly an easy place to draw recruits. It is also a bottom of the pack SEC team after Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU and Auburn. Nutt went 75-48 there, won the West three times, and had a better than .500 record in SEC play. There is a reason Ole Miss hired him out from under the Hogs.

when the namesake of the Fulmer Cup calls you out: Fulmer says he'll help in coach search Associated Press KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Phillip Fulmer wants to make it clear that he's willing to help his alma mater. But he isn't looking to replace his successor at Tennessee. Fulmer issued a statement Thursday because he has been deluged with calls. The man who was 152-52 in 17 seasons at Tennessee did not refer to Lane Kiffin's abrupt resignation. He called "recent events" painful and embarrassing.

Do you realize how many schools report secondary violations every year? I'm sure we probably reported some secondary violations of our own. They're not a big deal at all, it's just that Kiffin is a d-bag and every statement coming out of his mouth was rubbing everyone the wrong way, and thus they became a bigger story.

He was fired at Ole Miss because he refused to fire some of his assistants after that poor season referred to above. Was O-Coordinator for Peyton Manning at TN and head coach for Eli Manning at Ole Miss. Good hire for TN if they want out of the drama queen Lane....

Kevin Newsome originally was interested in Duke due to Cutcliffe because he wanted to play in a pro-style offense for a coach who could get him ready to the NFL. I can't imagine how he would feel if he had committed to Duke, watched Cutcliffe leave, and then realized, "Fuck! Why the hell did I come to Duke?!?!"
