David Brandon shows he can talk crap about Michigan State (kind of)

David Brandon and the Wolverines Team are set to square off against Mark Hollis and his Spartan squad in a "rough and tough" round of golf Monday.

Brandon basically said State is no match for his Wolverine squad, and it's just about over before it even starts.

The teams definitely have some talented golfers on them:

The Wolverines’ team:

  • Brandon.
  • Lion Kim, who played in the Masters in April as the 2010 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion and recently finished his golf career at Michigan.
  • Jay Feely, a kicker with the Arizona Cardinals.
  • Andy Matthews, the reigning Michigan Tournament of Champions winner who is a regular on the Nationwide tour.
  • Elaine Crosby, a longtime LPGA Tour player.

They’ll face this lineup from Michigan State:

  • Hollis.
  • Ryan Brehm, an assistant MSU golf coach and two-time Michigan Open champion.
  • Jimmy Chestnut, the 2008 Michigan Amateur champion
  • Jack Newman, the 2008 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion
  • Sue Ertl, an LPGA Tour veteran

Go get em' David ... lets show Misdemeanor State.. I mean Michigan State just how things are going to be this year ... beginning with golf and continuing with football.

It's never been done before.  Brandon's idea, stemming from a conversation he had with Hollis.

There is, however, a big annual match between Michigan and State grads.  It's been going on for years.  There's a waiting list to get in.  It's very competitive, at a recreational golf level.  There are no Lion Kims in it.

Brandon vs. Hollis - Brandon wins, easily.  He's a 5, Mark Hollis is an 11.  This is actually Michigan's best matchup.  Brandon, 6 and 5.

Lion Kim vs. Ryan Brehm - Lion Kim, 2 up.  I hope Lion is feeling good.  We really need this point.

Jay Feely v. Jimmy Chestnut - Ouch.  Jay Feely is a superb recreational golfer.  Jimmy Chestnut is a tournament player.  Chestnut, 3 and 2.

Andy Matthews v. Jack Newman - This is the critical match.  Andy Matthews is a fine player.  Jack Newman is a ferocious match-player.  Newman, 2 and 1.  (If I am wrong about this - and I hope I am, Andy! - it changes the whole match.)

Elaine Crosby v. Sue Ertl - Sue Ertl is the better player.  Ertl, 4 and 3.

MSU alums - 3 points.

UM alums - 2 points.

You might be giving Feely a lot of credit.  I personally know Jimmy and he is a +2 handicap (not a 2 handicap) at Warwick Hills.  The guy can really play if he gets his putter going.

It could be.  Yeah, it's a mismatch.  Hence, my "ouch."

Jay Feely is a football kicker who happens to have a really nice golf game.  For the non-golfer sports fans:  It would be like sending one of our football alumni, who happened to have been a real good h.s. basketball player, maybe even an all-stater, into a 1-on-1 basketball tournament against somebody like Steve Smith, Eric Snow or Mateen Cleaves.  Those guys aren't just great players at the local club.  They are in a different league.

Hate to agree, but State has 3 locks, and Brehm can go extremely low, although Kim is the better player. Hopefully Brehm doesnt get hot. M only has one lock if Brandon is a 5 and Hollis an 11, the womens match is also lopsided....never know in match play though!

It is at Eagle Eye.  My guess is that Lion Kim has never seen Eagle Eye, and that Brehm has played it 25 times.
