..about him having dinner with Bo the night before he died. I can't imagine how he felt the next day. At least he got a chance to thank Bo for all he did for him.
I think the hiring of Brandon is the perfect follow up person to Martin. Martin basically built Michigan a whole new athletic campus, and was great at doing it. (Is there a sport he didn't upgrade from a facilities stand point?) This will allow Brandon to come in a focus on first winning and second continuing to build and nurture the business aspects of Michigan athletics. Also, do both of those things while keeping tradition alive and well. David Brandon might be the best hire Michigan has made in the last 25 years (coaches/ADs/presidents).
I think that Brandon has the potential to be someone with the talents of both Bill Martin and Don Canham. Not everyone who meets Bill can come away saying that they liked him. Very few would have come away from meeting Don Canham and say they didn't like him. Both men were/are respected. I think Brandon will be liked and respected.
This succession reminds me a lot of what's happened at the business school in the last 20 years.
Joe White built the b-school into a solid institution, but wasn't a great marketing guy. The b-school brought in Bob Dolan, who was Assoc. Dean at Harvard b-school and the head of the marketing department, who really ramped up the branding and public image-building of the academic infrastructure Joe White built.
"He's been close to this place for a long time so it's not like he's walking in here (blind). That's an advantage."
Do you think there is a hidden meaning in there somewhere? I am just curious.
If there's a hidden meaning, I hope it doesn't involve anything along the lines of "Introducing your new head coach: Brady Hoke! (And, in fine print, "Lloyd Carr will be a special behind-the-scenes advisor to the football program.")
