Per Dave Ablauf: Standard Unis for The Game

Submitted by MGoShoe on

Angelique Chengelis just tweeted this:

No Michigan alt uni for The Game per associate AD Dave Ablauf MT @KyleRowland: OSU confirms it will wear all-white uniforms for UM game

— angelique (@chengelis) November 19, 2013

Edit: As reported by Nick Baumgardner, Dave Brandon stated in an email to MLive.com:

"We made it clear quite some time ago that our football team wouldn't be wearing any alternative uniforms this season."

To win consistently you need good coaching and good facilities.  To consistently have good coaching and good facilities you need money.  To get money, people have to pay.  If fans want a winning program, they have to expect to pay for one.  It really sucks to pay a lot for tickets, but unforetunately it's just the way things work (unless you're Oregon and have Nike to foot the bill for everything).

Unless you could get all schools to agree that spending and the consequent budgets have all gotten out of hand; that the college football experience has been badly distorted by professional sports, and that the federal government ought to get out of the business of mandating how universities allocate athletic budgets.

The thing is, with schools like Michigan that pull in a ton of money, the AD is almost entirely financially indepentdent of the academic institution with whom it is affiliated.  So it's not like building the new athletic campus is going to take money from away academics for us.  The problem is with schools like Rutgers, whose AD spends significantly more than they bring in, where it has negative affects on the institution and its students.

But I agree, athletic spending has generally gone way up, and it will continue to unless there is some sort of regulation (which there should be, in order to prevent things like Rutger's deficit from happening).  But at this point, if you want to play with the Alabama's and Orgeon's, you have to be willing to put as much money in as they do.

It depends on what you think Michigan NEEDS. But seeing as Michigan is running huge margins these days, they (by definition) have more money than they need to do the things they feel they need to do. At some point the marginal value of the next dollar isn't worth the  externalities.

But that's just my opinion.

But how do you arrive that determination?

Until the AD sees a decline in the money they're taking it and are seeing reports that their marketing actions are the reason that this is happening, how do you arrive at that conclusion if you're the AD? You're not really seeing a decline in intake due to the people saying, " I oppose this and I refuse to support Michigan for this". On the contrary they're seeing returns on this and can chalk up threads that appear on this board/blog as self-selecting 'bru haha'.

I'm not saying you're wrong but I'm just wondering how the AD would arrive at the decision that the "marginal value of the next dollar isn't worth the externalities". How do you measure that and is what is happening actually the opposite of how you'd measure that?

As far as the huge margin we're running -- the AD is seperate from the University as I'm sure you. It operates like a corporation. Large cash reserves are great for any corporation -- look at Apple for example. You can service existing debt, fund capital projects, or just save for a rainy day. In this day and age you need a CEO style AD and not someone who 'gets it'. Not to say that Dave Brandon doesn't get 'get it'. He grew up during the Bo era and played under him so I'm sure he 'gets it'. He's just doing a cost-benefit analysis and deciding the risks of tampering with a few things are worth the risk.

I don't agree with every thing he does. If I never saw another alternate unfirom I wouldn't care but my panties aren't in a bunch about it. A lot of people were decrying that "Ohio State wasn't showing respect for The Game" by wearing alternate unis but has our showing over the past decade shown respect?

Other things like whining about 3:30 starts and back in 1974 we never did this and I can't talk to the person next to me because it's too loud....it's a fucking football game.

I complain a lot I think -- I complain a lot in victory even but I think that's valid. Just because I eeked out a C- by studying 2 hours before the exam doesn't mean I should be happy or patting myself on the back and if your child did that you certainly wouldn't think it to be praise worthy. I think it's perfectly acceptable to be concerned about our on the field perfomances instead of just saying "here here boys a win is a win" but some of this whining about tiny little bullshit that makes no difference on the outcome of the game makes our fanbase one of the more loathesome fan bases in existence.

Win. That's the Michigan tradition I care about.

Not directed towards you BISB. My question devolved into a rant...sorry.

I think many of you guys owe Dave Brandon an apology.

But seriously, I've always thought MGoBlog is a little hard on Dave Brandon.  I've said it before, but I think 90% of what he's done has been great.  The marquee and the jerseys @ MSU are the only two complaints I can think of off the top of my head.

-The seat cushion debacle

-Not firing RR and GERG when he should have long before the Gator Bowl debacle so that we could bring in a new staff that would have more than 3 weeks to recruit the rest of the 2011 class

-FIVE different UNIFORMZ in one season

-RAWK and Blurred Fucking Lines taking over the stadium

-Sending out the "oh by the way, here's the bill for you doubled PSD's" letter a couple of days after quite possibly one of the worst home performances ever (after the Nebraska debacle last week)

-Ads all over the stadium, and creeping as near to the bowl as possible

-The student section debacle

-Scheduling APPY STATE AGAIN amongst the worst home slate eva= debacle

-Parachuters jumping down into the stadium like every other game

-The Beyonce concert debacle at halftime of ND

-The continuing debacle of "unretiring" numbers and reassigning them every week

Point: you can't spell "debacle" without DB

But you're stretching beyond reason.

If he had fired Rich Rod right away you'd probably be first in line to say "he didn't give Rich a chance in the bowl game!!!" and "How could he hire Hoke before Stanford played their bowl game and tried to get Harbaugh!!!"

RAWK music started with Rich and Martin.

The PSD things come out the same time every year. You don't stop mass mailings by what may or may not happen in the game the week before. This is just stupid.

Student section thing may be a debacle, but that's on the students for not listening. At least he's trying. They're not.

I'm not sure App State is that big a deal. But it certainly could be a negative. But blame the Big Ten.

Lots of people like the parachuters. They usually get a great reaction at the Stadium. Just because you have a stick up your ass doesn't make it a debacle.

The Beyonce halftime show was wildly popular. Why aren't you blaming the band for that? You think Brandon is choosing the set list? The lights were awesome.

The unretiring numbers is a great idea.  Give people popular numbers, and actually makes people remember them. Now how they're assigned maybe could use some tweaking, but that's probably more Hoke's call than Brandon's.

There, cut your list way down. You can love him now.

The uniform rumors aren't rumors. It's DB sending feelers out to see how the fanbase will react to alternate uniforms. If outrage, no change.

Reminds me of Officer Farva from Supertroopers...

Most of the time I just think it's DB trolling MGoBlog.  I imagine him sitting in his office laughing his ass off after setting up a stealth tweet and watching the board melt down.
