Darryl Stonum to Baylor

Submitted by MAgoBLUE on

I've been interested to see where Darryl Stonum would end up following his dismisal from the team.  According to his Twitter it looks like that will be Baylor.  I'm happy for him that he gets to return to his home state and resume his career.  Once a Wolverine, always a Wolverine.

Sorry, I'll start fitting in with the narrative now.  Yay Stonum!  I'm so happy for him!

Youre being a real douche, you know that? Consider this before hating on him: If he hadn't found trouble in the first place then he would have played last year and been out of eligibility...did not having Stonum on the team last year hurt UM as far as their record was concerned? Not a bit. Still an 11 win team. So he sits out, goofs up, and has found a second chance elsewhere. Why can't you just wish him luck and hope he turns it around? It doesn't influence Michigan's season, and he seemed like a pretty decent guy.

Look - Stonum did a lot for our team while he was here.  He worked hard.  He also screwed up a couple times.  Does that mean he put himself before the team, or does it mean he didn't have his head screwed on tight enough?  I don't know the answer to that, but you seem to, even though the preponderance of the evidence suggests you're wrong.  Stonum screwed up, he took his lumps, sat out a year, stuck around to get his degree, and is now trying his talents elsewhere.

At no point have we heard of Stonum being a bad guy or a poor teammate, just a guy who uses poor judgment on the weekends.  That doesn't make him a bad guy, and there's nothing wrong with hoping he gets his act together for his sake.

If you disagree, that's your prerogative, but it makes you look like an ass when you feel the need to make a point of it.

- He went to jail.

And it wasn't for some petty nothing - he was caught drunk driving - twice.  Safe to assume it wasn't the only time he thought it was OK to put other people's lives at risk so that his was a little easier.

People make mistakes, yeah - but Stonum repeatedly failed to show basic respect for the safety of others and compounded it by not respecting the law.  That not anywhere close to my definition of a Michigan Man.

I wonder what other actions you think are 'just bad judgment on the weekends'.

If memory serves me right, Baylor is a dry campus being highly religious and what-not. Might be a good fit for his past issues.

Still pretty bummed that it's not OK for him to play at Michigan this year but it is OK to play at Baylor. Doesnt seem right (to me) but I understand breaking team rules and all, gotta be strict

What was the basketball murder scandal? Wasn't it something like one player murdered another over drugs? Or am I misremembering what happened.

I don't remember hearing anything bad about their football program, but then again I pay almost zero attention to Baylor (unless they are playing, and probably beating, Texas).

I was more thinking about the Dunn incident a couple of years ago. Starting PG breaks girlfriend/babymama's jaw with his fist. She declined to press charges (future NBA earnings and whatnot). Dunn misses zero games.

On the football side, they've been closely linked to Will Lyles. It's no coincidence that Seastrunk landed there. I wish Stonum the best, but it's a fairly open secret down here that Baylor is running the shadiest AD in the Big 12.

Randomly met Stonum about a month ago at a lake in south central Michigan.  He was with a few friends and throwing a football with a buddy, which floated over in front of our place (2 houses down).   Ended up throwing the ball around with him for 15 minutes or so.  Good guy, he mentioned he was headed to Baylor.  He commented on all the incoming freshman just being huge, big dudes and that, "coach hoke? coach hoke recruits talent."  Asked him, "how good did it feel when you saw daylight on that kickoff against ND?"  You couldn't wipe the smile off his face with something that is good at wiping things.  "The highlight of my career man".

Best of luck to him at his next stop and hope he gets some looks from the NFL next year.

Daryl (DC) was at our cottage on Devils Lake as he has been my Administrative Assistant this Spring/Summer for my Real Estate Team in Ann Arbor.  I am very happy for him to get to pursue his dream to play college football one more year.

He was nothing but polite and a quick learner, which is not easy to do when you have to learn all the Real Estate terms and lingo in a short amount of time.

Everyone deserves a second chance, he will be near family, but I can tell you he will always be a Wolverine in his heart.

NEVER once did he not assume complete responsibilty for his actions. He stayed at U of M and got his degree, which I am sure some would have tucked their tale between their legs and left .

I'm proud and happy for him, a great kid and family !

I will miss his press conference attire as much as anything. How could anyone not like this?

I know he made a lot of stupid decisions but I've always been pulling for him. I think it might be because I felt bad for him that the last straw was him being late for his court date because he didn't have a car. Crummy way to go, even though it was his fault. I'm really glad he landed on his feet. I'll be cheering for him this year

I know which team I will be rooting for, it would be nice to see him go off and have a huge year. Like Junior, I was always really excited to see if he can make a name for himself at the next level. He seems to be all heart on the football field, it's ashame how everything ended at michigan. But he got his degree and he still has a year left to play at top BCS level football. I'm glad it worked out this way for him, I'm going to miss #22

"Once a Wolverine, always a Wolverine"

Not when you disgrace yourself and the program like Darryl did.  I wish him the best of luck and hope he can truly turn himself around and stay away from the booze, but he lost the right to call himself a Wolverine.
