Darnay Holmes trending to USC

Submitted by jbibiza on

Looked like he was a Buckeye lock but now trending heavily to the Trojans... including Balz from Wiltfong.

Gotta finish out the season strong. OSU and Mich did not. Bowl games may be viewed as meaningless, but they can create some momentum going into the offseason whether it's recruiting or practice.

Maybe not, but a first year coach in his first full recruiting cycle at a southern school in a nice place like Athens probably did.

For a kid like Holmes, the Rose Bowl surely could have had a big effect when contrasting OSU and USC in the post-season.

UCLA was an early favorite, but they haven't done much with the accumulation of talent under Mora Jr.

I don’t think losing the way we did is going to have a drastic impact. I do question how missing the playoff and performing fairly well (USC & Mich) is viewed vs. making it and laying an egg (OSU). It seems there's a lot of short-term memory.

Our loss might not hurt much with Holmes (I think it's possible that it helped tip the scales with Najee, given our OL performance) but USC's win is a confirming win for Helton and their regime. They didn't look very stable last season and the loss to Alabama was humiliating, but now that they have proven they are successful and that Helton will stick around, they're a good spot.

And this matters for a guy who wants to stay local, as it is thought that Holmes does. UCLA was a favorite for a long time, but they have been a disaster this season; good chance that Mora is gone after next season. That sort of instability could encourage a guy to look elsewhere, where Michigan and OSU are roving around... but now there's clearly a solid local program that he can attend.

Hard to compete with that. And, if this speculation has any accuracy to it, it means that bowl season might have mattered in this recruitment.

I doubt our bowl game will make a difference.  We lost an exciting game - that happens.  We missed a chance to be able to brag that we beat the big two Florida schools in back-to-back years.  That's about it.

OSU's loss might hurt them, being so lopsided, but probably not too much.  Recruits don't live and die with the outcome of each game like fans do.  They know teams can have a bad day.

yea, USC was looking disorganized at the start after they got blown out by Alabama, then lost to Stanford and Utah, but beating UW and closing the year strong has helped.

It's so funny to me because a team can be god awful at the start and then close a year strong having everything go their way. Nothing else taken into consideration like if the opponents had injured players or had to play a bowl game in a teams backyard. Just closed the year strong and there was a new hire at another place. So that team is quarteed to be good next year also. Man Kirby Smart is a fuckhead. Just thought I'd add that. You know any guy with the last name Smart has got to be the most self absorbed arrogant piece of shit.

Much prefer he stay out there than go to C-bus.  And for his sake, USC seems like a much better choice than UCLA (where he was rumored to be headed for a long time).  I seem to remember he had some very strong family connection at UCLA - wonder how that goes over when he chooses their biggest rival.

His dad is really close with UCLA's DB coach and Holmes has never shown much interest in USC throughout the process. If USC does indeed pull this off, that's a big problem as it'll mean Southern California is fenced off to an even greater extent than it was before. More of a problem for UCLA and the Cali-Braska movement but not fantastic news for Michigan either as I'd like to pull in a David Long and Kekoa Crawford on a regular basis.

I live in LA, and Darnay Holmes's uncle was my Uber driver to LAX back in August. He didn't identify himself as such, but talked about his nephew cornerback at Calabasas, and there was a serious facial resemblance. Anywho, unc told me that his nephew was locked into USC. Claim seemed fishy at the time, given the then-direction of Holmes's ballz, but now: VINDICATION. Also, uncle is a really cool guy.

Indeed. One take-away here is that there must be a lot of kids going through the process that don't care to give an accurate representation of their thoughts to recruiting trackers, for completely justifiable reasons.

On the flip side, it's also possible that Uncle was overstating Holmes's attachment to USC at the time -- Uncle was a lifelong USC fan, spent his early childhood in shadow of Coliseum. Had really fascinating story about OJ playing catch with neighborhood kids during his college days, coming off as genuine and affable. This led to a pretty deep conversation about the stability of identity over time, potential effects of brain injury, the presence of dark sides, the capacity to truly know people who are minor characters in your life, etc. Uncle was a cool guy.

Now hopefully the Longhorns steal Okudah, Wyatt Davis decides to go to USC, Tate Martell decides to take up interpretive ballet, and Baron Browning goes straight to the pros.
