Darius Morris 25th in power rankings

Submitted by kaykaybroke on

Noticed in the latest power rankings by rivals that Morris has made the jump to 25th

I'm wondering if UM's season continues to go the way it's heading if any of our freshman will make the freshman power rankings,

FWIW, trey zeigler and ray mccallum are both on the freshman PR's.

They might...but its more based upon preseason pub/rankings than anything else so id be kinda surprised to see any make it. Gotta wonder where Beilien is on that list though as this team has outperformed all expectations so far...

But how can they be based on preseason pub when Morris is on it?  He was a role player last year.  Even Michigan fans weren't really hyping him.  His breakout has caught just about everyone by surprise.

I remember a lot of basketball threads talking about how good he would be next (this) year.  He is really big for a PG and plays defense.  Those two traits were there last year as well.

Not meaning this to blast you jmblue.  I just don't think he's that much of a surprise to fans who follow M basketball closely.

I follow basketball closely.  In fact, it's because I've followed this program a long time that I know that leaps like the one he's made from last year to this are very uncommon.  Last year, Morris couldn't shoot at all, and didn't finish very well around the rim, either.  Then he comes out this year and is shooting 60% inside the arc.  Anyone who claims they saw that coming is lying.

My point was more in regards to the freshmen ranking lists being on pub.

In general i agree that Morris is a great suprise and that you're right its not all preseason pub.  But, also as we are early in the season despite morris being 4th in apg, he's still down at 25th in the pr, not indicitave of how he's played, but that it takes time to overcome the fact that preseason predictions didn't include his breakout.

Knight doesn't look anywhere near good enough to be a one-and-done at this point. People assumed he would be great because Rose, Evans and Wall all were. Fact that he is on this list damages its credibility.

That kid is a reason why it's good you can't go straight from high school anymore. A lot of the best HS players show they are worth the hype, but some aren't. Hell, Delvon Roe may have gone straight to the league if he could have, humiliating both himself and the franchise that would have drafted him.

Trey is lighting it up at CMU ranked as the 11th best freshman in the nation. He is averaging 15.9 pts, 5.6 reb 1.8 asts 1 block and 1 steal per game shooting 43% from the field, 47.4%(!!) from 3pt range, and 81% from the line. He would have looked great in maize and blue.

I am proud of how are freshman and entire team is playing I cant wait to see how that group plays after a year or two (2012 Dance) of playing together.

i mentioned this elsewhere, but i have to wonder about the effect of not having ziegler around is on morris. Last year the theme was get the ball to manny and let him do his thing. This year morris has had to be more assertive and hasnt deferred to someone who is a mroe prolific scorer. Although missing out on any talent hurts i cant help but think that morris' development may be in part due to the lack of other options, and the ability to lead a more balanced offense.

Strange that he's ranked so low, considering he has more assists per game and a better Assist to Turnover ratio than Demitri McCamey (the #3 on this list).

Statwise, Darius Morris is the best, or at the very least a close second in the Big Ten to McCamey. These rankings are bunk, obv.

I know it's not right, but I can't help but root against Zeigler and McCallum. That the dads of these kids recruited them so hard to their inferior institutions to save their own jobs when it was clearly not the best place for their sons to get exposure just felt so wrong to me.

These rankings are definitely based on preseason hype. No way there has been 24 point guards better than Morris this season.
