I think he's talking about Maryland and Rutgers.
Peppers at 10, which seems low.
I think he's talking about Maryland and Rutgers.
I don't think Sparty's offense will give anyone a problem in the next couple years. After watching their spring game, and considering what they lost from a bad 2012 offense, the D will have to carry them even more this year than last. But the D will be very good. They'll have a lot of 16-13 tyle games this year.
This is the issue.... their defensive starters are solid. But. If you get on the field for 80 snaps a game/35+ minutes of playing, you will have to play backups. And people will get injured just from wear and tear.
Why do we think their D will be very good? Their back 7 is very good, but their front 4 is below average at best. You can't have a very good D with just a weak unit.
Is it the back 7 or front 7? I guess it's all in how you look at. I see what you're saying, but I think the effectiveness of the linebackers and Rush at end I think is enough to make them a quality defense. I still see them as one of the top defenses in the conference which will keep them in games. The question is will they win those close games?
Rush v. Lewan... Nuff said.
I totally agree we win that matchup. I wasn't comparing MSU's defense to Michigan though. Go Muzzy Maulers!
Ha... Anyone Vs. Lewan... Nuff said
That's just not enough. To be a very good defense, you need to have very few weaknesses. They lack both talent and depth on the DL.
I agree their interior defensive line is a weakness. They won't be as good as they were last year or the year before. But they still have good linebackers, a good secondary, and at least one good defensive end. I'm not comparing them to Alabama. I just think that's enough to be one of the better defenses in the B1G. You don't think so? I mean what B1G defense doesn't have a weakness?
I agree that no team is without weakness, but their entire DL is bad, not just the interior. You're giving Marcus Rush more credit than I think he deserves, yet he's still the best player on that unit. Having no depth in the secondary is one thing, but the DL needs to rotate frequently to play well.
Our defense has weaknesses too, but not an entire poor unit. We probably have one question mark in each position group, but even those aren't as big as theirs.
you can say what you want to about their defense, but dantonio and narduzzi have essentially built perennial top 5 defenses out of 2 and 3 star recruits (with a few exceptions). their defenses are always good, and i expect that to be no different this year. let's not get ahead of ourselves, especially since we really don't know how our OL will gel as a whole, how Borges' play calling will go, or who, if anyone, will really step up at RB. one or more of those pieces missing and msu's 'average' defense will be very effective against us
Am I the only one who thinks its cool that Andrew Maxwell's dad posts here?
The offensive line and receiving corps will be better than last year.
Quarterbacking won't be worse and probably should be better.
Running back will likely be worse and tight end certainly will.
To be sure, the offense could improve a chunk and still be poor, but I don't think it's a slam dunk that they'll be terrible.
Am I missing something?
If MSU wants to shed the "Little Brother" label, they've got to stop saying weird little-brotherish things like this.
It's funny how, regardless of the sport, it's considered completely acceptable for an MSU coach to publicly take shots at Michigan, whereas the Michigan coach is always required to be diplomatic.
That's because when they do it, it's cute.
Why is this a thread?
Table for one, Bitter, table for one.....
Eugh, sometimes I feel like we're little brother...
I triple the notion, I feel lame for even reading this.
And what does it mean?
How do we know he is even talking about Michigan?
The tweet that preceded the one in the OP, per my timeline anyway:
Asked Dantonio about being in the East division starting in 2014: "Who knows who’s in the conference in 2014? It’s a crazy world out there."
— Joe Rexrode (@joerexrode) April 20, 2013
So, it's a general lack of awareness, if this is to be believed - it didn't seem like it was specifically directed at Michigan. I think this might be what happens if you don't peer above the weeds often enough.
Why is this dumb? This is what any football coach anywhere should say. "Why should we be afraid? They should be afraid. We're not lying down for anyone." It's just good coachspeak.
But Dantonio said it so he's a dick.
Dantonio being a dick has nothing to do with him saying it. He's a dick either way.
Nice catch ... correlation is not causation.
But that aside, I really don't care what Dantonio or any other coach says. The beauty of football is it's settled on the field. Better still, it's more often than not settled based on the fundamentals, not trickery or PR.
The scoreboard will tell the story.
I enjoy mocking Sparty as much as the next guy, but sometimes it looks like we're just over-doing it. Here especially. From my perspective, he really didn't say anything all that anti-Michigan. And even if he did, whatever.
Sometimes the best way to deal with Sparty is to just ignore them.
This is embarrassing, for Michigan. What is he supposed to say? Why would we care?
Who cares? MSU is going to be absolutely awful next year.
Dantonio has to fight the perception that they are 2nd tier. Reporters are always going to frame questions as if thy are inferior to UM and OSU. It's probably realistic that they won't reach that top tier, but I'm sure he is tired of those questions, which he takes as jabs. Dantonio can't present himself or talk like they can't be as good as those other programs because then his players start to believe it too. So sometimes, he talks like MSU is an elite program. Some of it has been stupid or unintentionally funny though.
spurred by the media. MSU just picked up a DT commitment from the Chicago Area. I clicked a link to a Spartan media source that noted that in addition to having offers from Syracuse, Cinci, and Arizona (still beating RR for recruits!) and others, the recruit had received VISITS from both Hoke and Meyer in January. Why was that even worth noting in a Spartan news source?
You're kidding, right? If you want to profile a recruit's value by gauging national interest you probably want to mention any contact from coaches who pull in top ten recruiting classes. It's not like Urban Meyer and Brady Hoke go and visit every high school player.
from other schools non-offering schools on our recruits - particularly those not fitting the 4-star mold, but the way this Spartan article was written screamed inferiority complex to me. Maybe I am just seeing what I expect to see.. I cannot find it so I cannot link it - sorry.
The op has been making a ton of MSU related comments recently, it getting really annoying. Stop obsessing op.
I hate dantonio as much as the next guy but I really don't see what's objectionable about this
Dudes two seasons of fame ended a couple of years ago...Why do we care what he has to say again?
Where's the threat?
We need some criteria other than points for thread posting.
Thadmattasagoblin, the threads you've been starting lately have been plentiful and of below average quality, even by offseason standards. C'mon man, you're better than this...
I don't understand all of the Dantonio hate. He has been extremely succesful against us during his career at Michigan State so far; and having graduated from the University of Michigan last May, I especially felt the bite. Put yourself in the Spartans' shoes, wouldn't you want a coach who is confident? Coach Dantoio is playing his part well, and it would be impossible for the Spartans to beat us unless Dantonio truly believed his team is superior. But every time he talks about the Spartans being a superior team, we all laugh at him about it. The reason why the Spartans have played so well against us is because of these comments made by Dantonio. I hate the guy, but I also respect him.
So you don't understand all the hate, but you do hate him nonetheless?
Too funny, I didn't even notice that, thanks for bringing it up. I meant that I hate him because he has been succesful against us, but I don't understand why we are all calling him out on all of his comments all of the time.
Agreed 100 percent with you. He is a great football coach, and he is an excellent judge of talent. He most likely obsesses about Michigan a lot less than we would think.
I really think it is a good response to the question. No one wants a coach that says, yes I'm scared, we should be scared. If you don't think you're the best there is something wrong with you.
"Great" might be a stretch.
How can you not hate Dantonio? He is such a weenie and his utter dispise for Michigan continues to slip through in comments like this. Granted this comment is pretty tame and not much there but there is something there. I have no respect for the guy ever since he got down in the mud with Mike Hart.
Why is this a post? If I cared about everything Dantonio says I'd be a Spartan. No one cares, stop posting.
Who gives a blipping F what this tool has to say. Lets do our talking by taking care of business on the field. HAIL!!
Honestly, who cares if he hates us and says moronic things about Michigan sometimes (although I don't necessarily think that is the case this time)? I prefer it that way. To me, Mark Dantonio has proven that he has a singular focus on Michigan every year, even at the expense of other games. This limits their growth as a program and virtually guarantees that they will never, ever completely dig themselves out of the position they currently find themselves in under his leadership.
Get back to me when Urban Meyer makes a dumb comment about Michigan.
Why all the whining and crying about this post? Sure it isn't headline material but it is a bit entertaining to read about. It's not like this post is trying to make it bulliten board material, it is just another strange comment Dantonio made due to his pure hate for Michigan. People need to realize this is for entertainment and get over themselves...
Whining about people whining isn't making you sound any better. But anyways, this board does a good job at policing itself. You haven't been around too long, but you'll come to realize the quality of topics is part of what makes this a great site, and in the end, that self policing (that you call whining) helps sustain those high standards.
you whining about him whining about other people whining is not making you sound any better. The point is people should add to the discussion or move on. This whole self policing crap has gotten out of hand. It's bringing the board down way more then the so called bad topics are.
Anyway I think the comments by Dantanio are perfectly fine. Actually I prefer that response to the typical no doubt it's going to be a tough division to win..were going to have to be at our best type remarks I would expect most coaches to throw out. On another note I kind of think Dantonio has softened a bit over the last year. I think he actually gained some respect for Hoke lately. Or maybe he realised just how dumb he looked interrupting Hecklinski and decided to change..but he hasn't seem like such a redass lately to me. Am I crazy? Anyone else notice this?
Well, your whining about me whining about....meh, I'm already over it. Say what you will, but self policing is a part of this site, and will continue to be until meaningful voting makes its return (which, per Brian, isn't too far off). Also, when a OP has 3 upvotes vs. 43 downvotes, it's not really the thread to criticize the drastic majority that is vocally chastising the OP.
But yeah, I'm with you in that I didn't see anything wrong with what he said. The quote as the OP presented it was taken out of context and I don't think was intended towards us specifically. The quote in fact seems to make perfect sense and is something you'd expect, as well as hope, a coach of a school that's always stuck under other team's shadow should respond. I enjoy making fun of Dantonio's over the top sound bytes, but this just isn't one of those. However, as far as him softening his stance on Michigan, I'm not sure if that's the case, but it was probably a lot easier (for multiple reasons) for him to show a little more restraint towards us since Hoke became coach when compared to our last staff.
my advice is to just ignore it because it is almost on every post. Very uptight community. It is retarded, I agree, but it comes with the territory on this site, the last couple years especially.
...around much longer. Either Sparty's little run is over or he keeps doing well for two more years and leaves for a real job like "the savior". MSU football is still a stepping-stone job.
He has to be talking about someone other than UM. Though this post does prove that if post something about MSU talking poorly of the wolverines, you'll get some traffic.
Not even on my radar screen. Their attention and envy of us is impressve. Im surprised at how many of their FRANDOR fans watch all our games. Really?
Let me fix that title for you:
"ThadMattasagoblin makes another dumb thread about Michigan State"
Everything else will take care of itself. No one will even hear the guy if he keeps losing to us.
I'd worry about his running back situation. The entire sports world knows they're screwed at QB but with no Bell, it's going to be Really hard for their defense to hold up.
Well, when your best RB is a converted LB, there may be reason to worry.
Yeah, and he didn't look so good yesterday. As if he was expected to.
I enjoy Mark Dantonio. He is a good coach that will ensure MSU always has a tough D.
He will never put MSU over the top. He will always be a dollar short, in part because the man is a weirdo. He is not going to sign the killer recruiting class, given the way he is.
It is a better MSU under Dantonio, but they will continue to be Michigan Lite going forward.
In short, thank you for posting. I continue to be amused by his retarded statements.
Yes they are cheaters and dirty players. But our record against THE douchebag U has been appauling over the last 10 years in both Manball and B-ball. We got to start a win streak and take everyone down convincingly for a while to shut everyone up.
That might be the case if OSU was a better school with a winning all-time record against us. But the series has experienced dominance on both ends.
So tired of people calling them Ohio
Yeah but they're still 14 down in the overall rivalry. You can't be a little brother when you're up in the all time series. It's one of the founding rules.
To anyone. On topic, it's funny to me that a comment by that idiot in E. Lansing triggers thoughts of our true rival, OSU. Damntonio knows they are losing ground in the conference, now where's the threat? I do agree a win streak is in order against the nuts, and possibly on the way. I would prefer a back and forth fight, tho.
To prove to the MSU and Ohio fanbases and prospective recruits that "This is Michigan" and back up the tradition of winning. As a huge fan, it has been difficult arguing against Ohio fans since they have had our number in Football. (And, MSU and Ohio have dominated our basketball team). Yes, Michigan can fall back on the total wins and number of championships but we have little recent wins to push back on our rivals.
I know that we will have our hands full against both teams in football. I can't stand the thought of losing to the smugness of Meyer and Dantonio. But they have earned the right to be smug. Meyer has won championships and Dantonio has a winning record against the Wolverines.
I know Hoke and Mattison are building for the future (Beilein too). But, I think this is an important year for these rivalries and the stakes are very high. If we run the table against Ohio and MSU (in bball and football), we could really bolster our perception amongst the elite recruits.
And we can really make a statement to their idiot fans that Michigan is back.
