Posted and discussed in an earlier thread, but that doesn't make Dantonio any less of a disingenuous douche bag.
Ok, I missed that. I'm guessing in the jersey discussion? Must have missed that, my bad.
It was in the "Tressel the Tragic Hero" post, but I think it's good we have a thread devoted to Dantonio making an ass of himself. He didn't have to answer the statements made, and he probably shouldn't have considering he didn't even know who Bradstatter was. But instead of the logical route, he took a shot at someone he didn't even know, making some very innaccurate and idiotic statements. Then again, what more would you expect from a guy like him?
Tressel is not a tragic hero.
THIS is a tragic hero:
if this guy was head football coach of my squad i would have real issues with being a fan of the team.
the MSU fanbase has a real inferiority complex and a chip on their shoulder which this D-bag personifies perfectly. Couple that with the fact that the guy can coach a little, and has had success against us in particular and there are probably few coaches that they would rather have.
Uh-oh. You have angered the State fans.
Um, is this supposed to be gay Klingon porn?
tressel arguably cost MSU a rose bowl by playing ineligible players
MSU fans hate OSU for doing this
Dantonio defends tressel
Brandstatter calls out such a defense
MSU fans rise to defend Dantonio, lambast Brandstatter
you can't make this shit up. they literally care more about people who beat UM than their own team. the fact those points have intersected the past 3 years has made a perfect storm of douchebaggery in E Lansing.
i don't often go overboard with my criticisms of MSU or the fanbase but the fact they're 98% behind Dantonio in his defense of Tressel is a fucking joke.
You'd think they would have SOME notion of what this "tragic hero" cost their program last year, but instead they blindly line up behind the idiot Dantonio.
It's right in line with Dantonio's comment that he wanted UM to lose to OSU when a Michigan victory combined with a Sparty victory over Penn State would have sent MSU to the Rose Bowl.
and they literally don't get it. they think Brandstatter made the comment because he's afraid of Dantonio and not, i dunno, that their coach is fucking BIZARRE and would rather pat Tressel on the back for being a good guy than, i dunno, move on and focus on himself. now he's part of the Tressel circus and people are focusing on how ridiculous his comment was and not, you know, HIS TEAM
I tried to think if I knew the name of anyone who ever played for Sparty. Still going.........
What about Plaxico "Hot Pants" Burress?
Both are/were Lions players.
Since we're on the subject of gignaticized DBs, can someone with enough points please start a hate thread for Mike Valenti? On the air right now yapping about Brady Hoke and how it's all talk and how no one's scared...which must be why he just led off his program talking about it for 10 minutes. Hate this douche with the passion of a thousand burning suns.
I will fight Mike Valenti
Isn't stupid. He is a world class a-hole, but not stupid. He knows what will happen over the course of the next few hours. Angry Michigan fan will call, he will interrupt and subsequently hang up on them, all the while being the twatwaffle that he is. And people will listen, which is the whole point. Oh, and Dantonio is a smug, hypocritical dickhead.
I generally respect his opinions, even when he bags on Detroit teams that I am a fan of, mainly because they are often true. With UM/MSU though, he is the perfect embodiment of the slappy MSU fan with an inferiority complex. He spends his whole show taking a dump on Michigan, but won't dare talk about MSU. He does realize they also had a presser, right? Like someone earlier said, MSU fans would rather root against Michigan than root for their own team. What Dantonio said is way more worthy of criticism and discussion than Hoke simply talking about how he is confident in his team. [rant closed].
Great book. Also really enjoyed Kite Runner. Hosseini has a great writing/storytelling style.
If anyone was listening and heard (who I assume was) MGoJen, it was absolutely the best call I've heard in my 4 listening to the ticket. Kudos for bringing some common sense to the ticket Jen.
It is worth calling Dantonio an assclown as often as possible. He doesn't actually respond to the point that Jim made, deciding instead to make fun of his character. This is on par with Dantonio making fun of Mike Hart after hearing of his comments... but less funny.
I'm not trying to defend Dantonio, but the true literary definition of a tragic hero (one who is destroyed by some flaw) actually fits Tressel. To have Brandstatter use the term "heroic" the way he did doesn't apply to Dantonio's comments.
From my high school English class, a tragic hero is only a tragic hero if their flaw is a character flaw that the masses can understand and excuse. Unless Tressel's flaw is a mental disorder that compulses him to lie and cheat, Tressel has nothing on Romeo, Hamlet, or Brutus.
The flaw is often hubris (*cough* Tressel *cough*), and the only reason tragic heroes are pitied (not so much excused, but pitied) is because typically their punishment (usually death) outweighs the scope of their original error.
But Dantonio also uses tragic hero inapproriately, based on his follow up comments - he seems to be meaning "Tressel is a hero who something tragic happened to" rather than "Tressel is a tragic hero". So it's fair to bash him for that, and Brandstatter's comments are directed against Dantonio's meaning.
Though I'd make the argument that Tressel's punishment was exactly as it should have been given the scope of his original (and subsequent) errors of lying to the NCAA.
Agreed (actually it should have been worse, i.e. fired not retired). Pryor probably fits the "tragic hero" mold better, particularly if his attempt at an NFL career flames out. I base this on him being vilified in Ohio and his crimes (that we know about) being somewhat less morally questionable (I consider a player breaking a dumb rule less bad than a coach lying to the sport's governing body).
Villians are destroyed by flaws too, man. You might as well be arguing for... Scar from The Lion King, or something.
Yeah, wouldn't a tragic HERO have to have done good before being undone by a character flaw? This is just a case of Dantonio praising a crook who got caught.
There is nothing heroic about Tressel. He's a hypocritical liar.
That isn't exactly the definition of a tragic hero either. Most people are destroyed by some flaw. It usually tends to indicate a good/heroic/noble character who cannot escape the grasp of fate due to a certain tragic flaw. Antigone, for example, dies due to her pride and dedication to her family. I think it was Aristotle that said a tragedy invokes pity and fear: pity for the character felled by fate and fear that it might happen to you.
Also, Dantonio has no clue what he is talking about and is no where close to understanding what a tragic hero is. At the end of the article he mentions something along the lines that a tragic hero rises and overcomes his/her troubles. He basically contradicts the entire notion of a tragic hero. Tressel is just an idiot. He is the type of person that scares me: their stubborn refusal to embrace logic and investigate truth outside of their preconceived perspectives and prejudices. MSU was the "Big Ten Champion" last year, yet they split the crown because of TSIO's cheating sending them to a lower tier bowl, where unfortunately for them, they got obliterated by Alabama.
That so many people far and wide refer to Dantonio as a D-Bag. He's a textbook definition of the term, except for the not being young, thinking he's a player, or well, smiling. Ever..
I think people may be misunderstanding Dantonio's comments. I believe he was merely wanting to show that he has the "right stuff" for TSIO.
On the subject of Tressel: Ignore the rules violations/cover-up, focus on Tressel's wins
On the subject of Brandstatter: Pretend that you don't even know who Brandstatter is, while simultaneously stating that this unknown person cannot possibly have had any "real meaningful relationships" with college players.
You see? Dantonio can look past Tressel's ignominious end at TSIO and focus on Tressel's wins. Perhaps Dantonio can relate to that "real meaningful relationship" that Tressel had with Pryor. Perhaps, but just perhaps, Dantonio has the right stuff for TSIO.
God, Michigan needs to win this year against State. After Central evens up the series a few weeks earlier...
I will be rooting SO HARD for the Chips that weekend.
Hell yes! I'll be repping the Chips real hard that weekend.
Those were my thoughts exactly. Most of the tragic heros I remember ended up dead and / or desolate.
Hey Dantonio: Um, no. Tragic heroes get completely crushed and are left to wallow in misery.
Go to high school.
laughs best. I suspect Dantonio will pay for the comment more than once.
If we had a coach that was "close" with Jim Tressel, I would never trust him as our coach unless he straight up denounced him like Bo re: Woody. That's just unsettling. I have some sparty friends who hate ohio state, I wonder if they know their coach is bff's with Tressel
I'm not sure that "denounce" is the bestt word for Bo and Woody.
IIRC Bo never denounced Woody. In fact, he made a lot of excuses for him, includingsaying that low blood sugar caused Woody to hit that Clemson player.
Bo never did and would never have "denounced" Woody. Bo had much respect for Woody, due to Woody actually being an honest man.
that we just not pay attention to Dantonio. He loves Tressel, he loves OSU more than MSU, and he's a dink. These things aren't likely to change.
I'm interested in reading where you came to some of those conclusions. Not saying you're wrong. I don't know the man past Michigan Replay or radio.
I believe you are referring to Frank Beckmann who has a conservative leaning radio show on WJR. Not Brandy. Beckmann does the play by play. Brandy is the color man.
or he wouldnt have known he didnt coach college football...
Note his distinct inability to point at things.
...a BIGGER douchholic than Dantonio...15 th of Oct can't get here fast enough.
Unlike Brandstatter, UM slappies, and some others, Dantonio is able to realize that there is more to college football than just what takes place on the field. Thus he praises him as someone who positively impacted the lives of everyone that he comes into contact with. That means college coaches, high school coaches, players, families, etc. In other words, all of the things that are of the greatest importance to Dantonio.
Has a more hypocritical statement ever been made?
Come on! You made that up. Right? There's is no fucking way that is real.
What the hell is wrong with people?
I wish I had made that up man, that just shows you how idiotic the people that we are dealing with really are.
Douchetonio is fucking dickish asshole.
Question: Who has played in more Rose Bowls since 1969, Jim Brandstatter or Michigan State University?
They are also tied over the last two decades.
Half of those weren't consensus titles; State was voted #1 in just one poll, and Michigan only claims National Titles when they have consensus votes. If Michigan counted the way the Spartoons do, Michigan would have 22(!) national titles.
Also: Wake me up when y'all get a Heisman winner.
I just love how Tressel's cover-up arguably cost State a trip to the Rose bowl, and Dantonio still defends him publicly as a "tragic hero." And now Kirk Cousins is shooting his mouth off about guests who introduced themselves as Michigan fans at a wedding. State doesn't act like a perennial contender program, because (suprise!) they haven't won an outright Big Ten title since 1987. Watching Dantonio's "perennial power program" vs. Alabama was very amusing, thank you.
Little help. I have been trying to insert a picture of my take on this. Here you go. If anyone can paste it for me, thanks.
I don't know who this Mark Dantonio is, but as far as I'm concerned he's never had a real meaningful relationship with a mentor in his entire life.
At least one that should be a mentor.
is setting himself for soon to be open tsio job he is saying all the right things to get that job.
I agree, but do you think he's a legitimate candidate for the job?
I despise Dantonio but he's right in one respect - who the f-ck cares about Brandstatter's opinion on the subject? He's just a talking head weighing in on something he technically knows nothing about (never coached at the college level, etc.). Even though Brandstatter is right, I would have responded the same way Dantonio did.
Did I miss a /s? Brandstatter never coached at the college level, but he was coached at the college level by a certain Bo Schembechler. I think he has some degree of experience with the appropriate behavior of a college coach with integrity.
By all accounts, Tressel was the best coach to his kids. He was supposedly an outstanding mentor and teacher. That is the only side that Brandstatter would have seen with Bo as well. With respect to dealing with compliance/legal issues, etc. Brandstatter would have no knowledge and continues to have no knowledge. I completely agree with what he says, but he has as little idea about the situation as I do.
Well no, Brandstatter doesn't know first hand about the day-to-day of a coach filling out compliance paperwork (apprently Tress doesn't either /HALOL). But to imply that that makes him unqualified to comment on the heroic status of a person who lies on said paperwork is stupid. That's the argument Dantonio was trying to make, and it's a dumb one.
As to your first couple sentences, that's exactly the hypocrisy that makes Tress gross. How can you be a good mentor when your approach to discipline in a serious NCAA infraction is, "I don't want to hear about this so I'm gonna sweep it under the rug now get out of my office"? The fact is, Tress thought it was more important to alert Pryor's "mentor" (sugar daddy / handler / agent) than to fulfill his contractual obligation to deal honestly with his own compliance department and the NCAA. That is not the mark of a man with integrity, regardless of the game he talks, and it doesn't take a college football coach to see that.
but Tressel himself "technically" knows the situation.
You have to have coached college football to weigh in, Coach D? Hello: non sequitur.
that rat basterd basterd ....the "there are ....." posts will be more interesting
If you're going to spell it incorrectly, at least go with "basturd."
Dantonio is not my favorite person, I just don't care for his BS.
I'll acknowledge that he's the best coach LB has had for a long time. But he's got his head up his ass.
Sparty deserve Dantonio. He's the ultimate personification of that entire moronic fanbase.
Hey, Tres! I'll do anything for my Godfather. You know that
Breaking News from the Big Ten Media Conference:
Mark Dantonio doesn't know who Shakespeare and Aristotle are. When asked on the subject and how they might respond to some of his irrational comments concerning former and disgraced TSIO coach Jim Tressel, Dantonio had this to say:
"I have never heard of these guys. Clearly, they have not been in a leadership role with young men." He continued by stating this: "I doubt they have ever known the joy of being able to mold impressionable young minds into well-rounded young men. Never holding a position of responsiblity like mine, they probably haven't instilled the values of character, virtue, and honesty into young men."
After having much success in MSU these last couple of years belittling people with a more impressive diploma and shorter than himself, we find it odd Coach Dantonio would take on the literary and philosophy crowds. One would think with his rival resurging in Ann Arbor, he might want to spend more time on the recruiting trail to make up for several misses in the state of Michigan, rather than draw the ire and angst of classical, english, and generally anyone with a hich school diploma across the country. This type of press might be what he is looking for to rekindle MSU's national recruiting base.
Dantonio did want to stress his relationship with Jim Tressel as one of a "mentor." He stated, "I learned a lot under that man. His tutelage tought me the value of character and integrity, which I now instill into my young men. Go ask Aristotle if he understands what it is like to flourish under the guidance of such a wise and respected 'mentor.' Go ask Shakespeare what his contribution is to the next generation."
When we followed up with questions concerning his tutelage of Winston and the other suspended MSU players from the dorm massacre, Coach Dantonio only gave us one of his patented and unwarranted smirks and growled as he walked away, "Go investigate Dick Rod, you liberal Michigan slappies!"
Well Bob, thanks for the good reporting on the ground. One can only wonder, how this man has a job and thank God he doesn't coach at my school.
I find nothing "tragic" about Tressel's severence package or the pension he is now eligible to collect after his career at two state universities. The wording of "retirement" made Tressel a lot of money.
needs to stfu and worry about keeping his Sparty Crime Syndicate off the police blotter.
Please link to a specific front-page post (or Board post) where major members of the MGoBoard have called, en masse, for the re-raising of the Fab Five banners in our (soon to be fully renovated) Crisler Arena and Player Development Center. Speaking of which, I hear State got knocked out in the first ("second") round! Ouch!
As for Mr. Stonum, he is still suspended indefinitely. If he is suspended for zero games next season, then we might see more pitchfork-wielding bloggers flooding the MGoStreet.
Jim Brandstatter is a member of a numerous (and LARGE) EL family who sent sons to MSU in the 60's and 70's to MSU for football and basketball. He is the only one who saw the light and toddled off to AA.
...for the coaching job at tOSU next season. Sending not-so-coded love messages.
Is that MSU fans dont realize that OSU's cheating cost them the Rose Bowl bid.
So Dantonio is basically defending someone who cost his team a BCS bowl.
I have to say I really dont like that guy even a little. My dislike of this guy started in the begining before he even beat Michigan. There is just someting about him that dont ring right with me. He is a d-bag no question. He is rather immature for a man that is a head coach of a college football team. MSU fans should in fact question is loyalty. Ohio offers him a job he is gone. Simple is that. If he wants to be at Ohio or not isnt the point the point is he is at MSU and while he is there he should always want what is good for MSU. Defending Tressel isnt whats good for MSU.
For the record Tressel lied to keep his players on the field not because he was afraid of their safety. Thats proven in itself when he contacted Pryors sugar daddy but nobody else. Not even the other kids involved. He the pretended he knew nothing about it after the case came to light. He is NOT a tragic hero. He is a guy who wanted to win football games. Not even in the same boat.
Keep in mind lots of people do good things and they also make mistakes but when you make the same mistakes for years and years you lose all credibility. At one time I respected Jim but now I know he dont deserve it.
Our in-state rivals deride us as self-righteous, arrogant, sarcastic, and elitist. Yet Dantonio is the embodiment of these things.
Trying to get my finger on the exact nature of Dantonio's doucheyness, and I think he kind of reminds me of one of those creepy superior bible-thumpin' preachers. Sort of like John Lithgow in "Footloose".
Come to think of it, sort of like Jim Tressel. Or Woody Hayes.
Dantonio is such a scumbag. Brandstatter could not have articulated a better response. Unreal. I hope we beat the piss out of them this year. Or every year.
Dantonio and Cousins on the UM rivalry.
He grew up just outside Columbus, coached in Ohio under Tressel who he admires so much he gave his son a job, his dream is to return to Columbus God willing maybe even as Ohio’s head coach (if only he had the heart for it). This is why he's a douche. MSU fans know this, and that's why they get so mad. Because in the end there is no loyalty to MSU, it's just a bump in the road.
