Dantonio, the heart attack, Sat night interview, and the State Game

I was going to post about MarkyD being nasty after his win, when the news story caught my eye. Having a heart attack is a good reason for being short on-air.

So, he is out for sure next week per MSU. A friend had a similar surgery last year and it took him three weeks to really feel up to walking around normally. His wife had to force him to go to carido rehab, even, after two weeks.

I really can't see him being at the State Game.

Opposing opinions?

I'm sure he'll be watching UM

I'm sure he'll be watching UM tape and scheming in his hospital bed/at home.  Beating UM is #1 with him, as it probably should be.

Not that this topic has been

Not that this topic has been discussed anywhere before COUGH http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/dantonio-stable-after-heart-related-matter COUGH

but I mean he was actually smiling after the game, so that means there was some happiness.  Plus, I would probably be short, because Id rather be celebrating with my team and family instead of talking to a sideline reporter.

Especially one that looks like Holly Rowe

Dantonio was likely thinking "I finally win one, and which hottie is assigned to interview me?  Holly Rowe????"

the doctor said that everything went well, that the attack was mild and that he is in great shape so i see no reason that he won't have a quick recovery. i would expect him back by our game and at the very least possibly pull a JoPa and coach from the press box?

Stent work

We have a father in our school who is 43 and had a heart attack four weeks ago. He had a stent put in that same day and was jogging a week ago...nice and easy.

My wife and friends say, "get your cholesterol checked...now!".

Dantonio looked a bit subdued during the interview so he may have been experiencing symptoms. Those HA's come out of nowhere.

I hope he realizes it just a game and he should rest and get better.  I hope he doesnt rush back to inspire the troops.  They will be prepared, but it wont matter because I think we get them this year.

Had a stent and was down for 3 weeks?

My dad had a stent and was up to normal the next day. I will say there is probably a difference between one and multiple stents, but I've never worked any post cath stuff.
something I read indicated one stent. I would have thought being our for 3 weeks would be extreme.

I have a really insightful

I have a really insightful take on how Dantonio, the heart attack, the sat night interview, and the MSU game all interrelate. But I'm going to wait for the 5th thread on this issue to post it. That thread will be the best one, I just know it.

Good advice, but I don't want to spread myself too thin by adding the whole initiative thing - you know what they say, jack of all trades, master of none. Plus, I would have to wait for the 3rd and 4th threads to appear first.

So you were using a bit hyperbole with that whole '5' thing. I thought you may have gone back and looked. I did and noticed the first Dantonio thread 3 pages back. Carry on!

This is the fifth thread.

Mods deleted three and one other is still up:

"Three different Dantonio Heart Attack Posts popped up within 30 seconds, all 30 minutes after the original (that was still sitting a top the most recent posts)"

We're waiting.

Yeah

A few people posted at the same time regarding the Dantonio thread, myself being one of them. When I went to post, there were no threads discussing the issue, so I thought it would be one people would be interested in. By the time I pasted link and clicked save, there were two others. Of course, people had a fit and I got negged to death claiming we were all 'doing it for points'. Yes, we live and die by e-board points *roll eyes*. I swear, I'm very close to never posting anything on this board again because of the downright rude behavior of some.

I was surprised to read he is 54. He looks years younger than that.

He is great for the rivalry. Ultimately he'll make us sharper and we'll be indebted to him for making State relevant at least in terms of perception. He might be MSU's Pat Dye or Tubberville to our Stallings or Saban.

Get well Mark.  See you on the 9th we hope.

He will be back and ready to go come game week. I wish him well but this guy hates us and wouldn't take one second of our worry, so don't die and prepare for hell in 3 weeks. Go blue.

I got sucked into a 10 minute infomercial about those things. Yea, they're comfortable and all, but how about a sweatshirt and socks. Wouldn't that work?

Looking good is more important than feeling good

It gives him that Emperor Palpatine effect.  So I say he needs to keep wearing it.  The Dark Lord of Big Ten Football sort of deal.

Unless someone can find him an "In Rod I Trust" Hoodie?

(It is nice that he is ok and well dressed)

That is a great photo. Who knew?

He looks damn good in that.  He should wear maize slippers though.

On a more serious medical note, I heard the doctor instructed him to avoid Denard Robinson film for at least the next 4 to 6 weeks.

I hope he has a full recovery.

I think about what might be good for someone's heart and all, but he might be the kind of guy who puts more strain on his heart having to watch it instead of being involved and I am not joking there.   I can't imagine him sitting having to watch the Michigan game and not be involved - that would be a lot of stress on him.

One major factor...

I was thinking about this before the MSU-ND game.  Not sure if someone has brought this up.

Didn't Kelly succeed Dantonio at Cincinatti?  I bet Dantonio felt that he deserved more credit for the Cincy run where Kelly was getting all the credit (it wasn't like Kelly inherited a bad program).  And to add insult to injury, Kelly gets rewarded with the bigger job with the bigger salary.  So I bet Dantonio felt added pressure to beat Kelly, which probably added to the stress.  You could tell after the game that Dantonio doens't like Kelly too much.

He will be at the UM v MSU game. I don't care if his players have to put on ski masks and break him outta the hospital. He will be there.

On a serious note, I hope he recovers. I like him at MSU. It gives them some legitimacy and intensifies our rivalry.

I think it depends

One thing I will say about Mark D., you can tell that he puts a lot into his job, so much so that it seems as if he rarely (except for the occassional smile after a heart attack inducing fake field goal holy shit I get to keep my job call) enjoys his job.  It looks like it always really takes its toll on him.  If this is truly just a fluky kind of heart thing and there is a quick, full recovery, no strings attached, he will likely be back after a week.

However, I do think there is the chance that this may be a "you need to take a few steps back and catch your breath" type scenario.  College football head coach at big program is a tough job, and Dantonio has taken some lumps with off field fiascos, etc. and he does appear to be recruiting his ass off in some regard, which probably takes its toll as well.  If his job is safe, and I believe it is, there is the chance that he may step away for a little while if there is genuine health concerns.

But I doubt it, he will likely return for Big Ten play.

what's worse?

What would be more stressful for Dantonio? Coaching or being away from the team for a period having all the time in the world to think about how much work they have to do to prepare? Tough call. I could see being forced to step away as being more stressful in a sense.
