These types of posts make that win sooooo much better.
Damn you Yankees (American's)!!!
Delivered fresh daily.
Sorry America Junior - you lose.
Seriously though, what an awesome game. I cannot remember another hockey game that got me more fired up and this wasn't even the medal round.
I think they are going to go w/ Luongo, but seems like Marty might be the better choice. He knows how to deal w/ the pressure. Not sure Luongo is going to be up to the task.
Imagine being able to say "hey, I guess Brodeur's not playing well today; let's put in Luongo."
Let's all remember that this thing is far from over. There are still 12 teams alive with a chance to win gold. We've won only the top seed and a bye, meaning we are guaranteed to finish in the top 8.
I think, though, at this point we all feel that 8th won't be good enough.
The U.S. now awaits the winner of Switzerland and Belarus. Finland, Latvia, and the Czechs are in our bracket.
If we can beat our bracket, we would only have to face one of the following:
Hey, here's a tip for you Canucks: Don't run into one another.
Our goofy frozen hat!
True hockey chokes, and we thank you for that.
With bacon round we see thee cook,
The hosers lose by two!
Your shots went wide, O Canada,
We punked you in your crib.
God keep Brodeur glorious a sieve!
O Canada, we punked you in your crib.
O Canada, we punked you in your crib.
(Sorry Canada, normally you guys are cool. I appreciate the entire letting me cross over to Windsor and drink at age 19, the Cuban Cigars and everything, but once every 4 years I hate you.)
I confess I think of the Leafs as the Lions of the NHL.
Is that some Canuck grammar?
LOL Canada hockey!
Canada plays hockey? I thought they were only good at curling?
They are only good at curling.
Sorry to be obnoxious, but yeah, Canada definitely outplayed the US throughout the the game, as the shot totals show.
I think the USA has a great chance to medal with the bracket set up as it is, and yeah, that was a hell of a game
I still think, given another chance we would crush the American team. But I agree with above when stating Luongo can't handle the pressure. The guy has never won anything, and I think that will continue but we find on Wednesday.
I thought your next game was Tuesday.
I don't really consider Germany a game, it's more of a scrimmage slash practice, the real test will be Russia on Wednesday. And if Canada was going to win Gold they were going have to beat the Russians eventually, just one of us won't be winning a medal, just like '06.
Suck it up. We lost. They won. Get some sleep, tomorrow is another day. If we play the U.S. again, we might lose again. Ryan was incredible. If he isn't we have a chance to win. Biggest thing to remember, these are NHL players so we aren't going to "crush" any team full of NHL players. We might "crush" the Germans, but after that no more crushings.
this hoser musta' hod too many molsens to know what hees talkin aboot.
This lacks an important piece of grammar. It would've passed with 'eh' at the end.
Agreed about the Crosby line. Richards and Crosby were by far the most effective pairing out there for Canada. Funny don't you think?
It seemed like the third winger on that line was rotating (or possibly some messy changes), but I think they were best with Nash was out too.
The Ducks players disappointed, and I really didn't think the Shark line was all that effective outside of the one goal. Canada needs some consistency out of these players if they plan on beating anyone.
Thanks for inventing hockey. It's pretty fun.
It was only one game. It wasn't the medal round. Plenty of time to regroup. They played a great game but ran into a very hot goalie. That happens in hockey a lot of times. Ever watch a Michigan hockey game? We badly out shoot most of the teams we play, but still lose. If we don't win, the sun will still come up. And better yet, we are getting closer to UConn every day.
"If we don't win, the sun will still come up."
Unless you live in Nunavut.
Or Demon Bear has blown up Earth.
Their neverending optimism:
What if it's Datsyuk that fucks up Canada? Especilly after Rafalski's night, I'd cough up a grand to be a fly on the wall in the Wings locker room after the Olympics.
U S and A! I so excite!
I don't usually follow hockey at any level and I've been watching every game I can. The Canada-Switzerland game got me hooked.
If they could do that, they would be called Americans. Fuck yeah!
I've proposed an article for a local hockey mag about how the current U.S. team is a direct result of the renaissance c. 10 years ago in U.S.A. hockey's development system, the heart of this being in Ann Arbor with the U.S. National Development Team.
The bulk of this team came up in the very new junior programs in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Look at their histories and see how often they played for a time on the Ann Arbor-based national teams, or the metro-Detroit Honeybaked Ham/Little Caesars midget squads.
I think USA Hockey has done a fantastic job in reforming its development system since I was a kid, and we're seeing very real dividends. Heck, even Sid Crosby was the beneficiary of an American hockey academy (in Minnesota). This suggests that we will likely be an even bigger producer of hockey talent in the future.
One of the responses that the NHL gives for moving teams to the Southern U.S. is that it will increase hockey development in the United States. This, from looking at the U.S. team, has not happened yet if it ever will. All of these guys are from Canadian border states. Michigan provided the most players, followed by Minnesota, Wisconsin, Western NY and PA, New Jersey, and Nebraska (but that's just Stastny, whose family is kind of a Czech-hockey version of the Von Trapps).
Canada... more like Cantada
What's with all the Crosby love? He was -3 last night! Man, you Hoser's are dillusional... take off, eh.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
"GET CROSBY ON THE DAMN ICE"
if we play again.
He scored a big goal for each team, though his goal for the USA was probably slightly more important, taking the crowd out of it a tad and giving us a lead to play behind, was on ice for the first three US goals and though he had a couple things that looked like they could become dangerous, they always got taken care of before they actually manifested. I'll take that!
Nash, on the other hand, terrified me all night.
You hear that boys? He said they'll whip our boots if there's a rematch? His cocoa must really be boiling ay.
In a week the great reconciliation can begin. Then watch out UConn!
Aug. 12 - Moved to our new home in Canada. I am so excited. It's so beautiful here. The mountains are so majestic. Can hardly wait to see them with snow covering them.
Oct. 14 - Canada -- it is the most beautiful place on earth. The leaves have turned all colors and shades of red and orange. Went for a ride through the beautiful countryside and saw some deer. They are so graceful. Certainly they are the most wonderful animals on earth. This must be paradise. I love it here!
Nov. 11 - Remembrance Day. Deer season starts soon. I can't imagine anyone wanting to kill such a gorgeous creature. Hope it snows soon. I love it here!
Dec. 2 - It snowed last night. Woke up to find everything blanketed with white. It looks like a postcard. We went outside and cleaned the snow off the steps and shoveled the driveway. We had a snowball fight (I won). When the snow plough came by we had to shovel the driveway again. What a beautiful place. I love Canada!
Dec. 12 - More snow last night. The snow plough did his trick again to the driveway. I love it here.
Dec. 19 - More snow last night. Couldn't get out of the driveway to get to work. It's beautiful here but I'm exhausted from shoveling. F#cking snow plough.
Dec. 22 - More of that white shit fell last night. I've got blisters on my hands and a sore back from shoveling. I think the snow plough hides around the corner until I'm done shoveling the driveway. Asshole.
Dec. 25 - Merry F#cking Christmas! More frigging snow. If I ever get my hands on the sonovabitch who drives the snow plough, I swear I'll kill the bastard. Don't know why they don't use more salt on the roads to melt the f#cking ice.
Dec. 27 - More white shit last night. Been inside for three days now except for shoveling out the driveway after that snow plough goes through every time. Can't go anywhere, the car's stuck in a mountain of white crap and it is so frigging cold. The weatherman says to expect another 10 inches of the crap again tonight. Do you know how many shovels full of snow 10 inches is?
Dec. 28 - That f#cking weatherman was wrong. We got 34 inches of the crap this time. At this rate it won't melt before summer. The snow plough got stuck up in the road and that bastard came to my door and asked to borrow my shovel. After I told him that I had already broken six shovels shoveling out all the crap he had pushed into my driveway, I damn near broke my last one over his f#cking head.
Jan. 4 - Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get food and on my way back a damned deer ran in front of the car. Did about $3,000 damage to the car. Those beasts should be killed. The bastards are everywhere. Wish the hunters had exterminated them all last November.
May 3 - Took the car to the garage in town. Would you believe the thing is rusted out from all that salt they put all over the roads.
May 10 - Moved to Florida. I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would ever want to live in such a God forsaken place as Canada!
Moving from Hoth to America's wang is only a minor improvement.
Yeah really. The UP isn't that bad, Canuckistan can't be that much worse, can it? Just get a 4x4 and forget this "clearing the driveway" shit.
(I have a neighbor from Texas whose only car is a nice new Mustang GT. Watching him try to make out of the parking lot was quality Monday morning amusement. Spin, drift sideways, skid to a halt, spin, drift, skid, repeat)
It's not the Mustang thing so much as the Texas thing. I have a Mustang, but I also know what I'm doing in the snow. Bet your neighbor would be doing the same exact thing in an Expedition.
I think you have to give a bit more time to the southern states. There have already been some good players to come out of Texas and California. I suspect that in the next 5-10 years we will see more players coming out of other states like Fla, NC, etc. I moved from A2 to NC 3 years ago and the Canes winning the Cup in 06 was a big spur to more kids playing hockey down here. I have been pleasantly surprised at the level of competition locally. Remember, most players are not into the pros until early to mid 20s so it takes some time.
Edit: Sorry, this was intended as a reply to Misogopon above.
That's a very good point.
The thing is, USA Hockey taking charge of development leagues, and the NHL moving South happened around the same time.
To be fair, though, cities like Raleigh were starting from scratch, whereas there was a lot of hockey in Detroit and Minneapolis and Madison long before USA Hockey got its shit together.
America's hat isn't supposed to win, sorry.
but does anyone else have an easy time looking at the canadian team as michigan hockey. outshooting your opponent by a vast margin and still losing by 2. were there any trends with the way canada played that were similar to the way michigan plays? food for thought
Oh, hey, you read the mgoboard earlier today.
sorry no i hadn't kept tabs on the board closely enough to see that. now that you mention it saying that did kinda make me look like an ass. merely a coincidence i assure you.
this game made me get my hardcore patriot on. Damn right I'm bandwagoning. This is Amurrica. GIMME A BIG UGLY G, BOYS
I figured I'd chime in on this one. I have dual citizenship with Canada and every single person in my family is Canadian. So, within my family and social networks I have a lot of rivalries.
Here is a facebook status of one of my friends from Windsor that I think you will enjoy. Mind you, he is from Poland.
"I'd rather be in Poland during WWII fighting the Nazi's with panzer tanks on a horse with a bow and arrow and rocks than be an American. Fuck you USA, we will see you in the medal round."
A little non PC, but I figured you all could handle it. And if everyone doesn't know by now, this is how hard most Canadians are taking this loss. I think I'm being disowned by my extended family for rooting for the Stars and Stripes. Oh well, at least I have friends on here...
So he's comparing the last time the Leafs were "good" with Yzerman's and Babcock's 5 combined Cup rings and 9 combined Cup finals since '93...? I fail to see the parallels between the two.
After the US medals in hockey, does the rest of the country return to not giving a damn about hockey for the next four years?
My money says it does.
