Damn! Its getting hard to get into Michigan

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

Just saw this article at the Freep about this year's admissions http://www.freep.com/article/20110715/NEWS06/110714015/University-Michigan-receives-record-number-applications-up-25-from-2010?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|FRONTPAGE|s

Just shy of 40,000 applicants this year (up 25% from last year) for a class of 5,900. Only about 40% got admitted and 40% of those admitted matriculated. I fear for my kids when they apply. Better start saving up for out-of-state tuition because I'm not sending them to State.

I can attest to the headline. My senior year of high school i applied for admission for Fall 2010 during the early application period. I spent weeks on the application and essays, trying to perfect them. I graduated with a 3.67 GPA a 29 ACT and received 8 letters of reccomendation, all from prominent figures in the area, many of whom being alumni. I was deferred, then waitlisted, before finally being rejected the last week of my senior year. I went on to attend a different 4 year in-state institution. About three days before the transfer application I decided I would apply to transfer. I basically did the whole thing in one day, being happy where I was I just was curious to see if I could get in. I finished my freshman year with a 3.6 GPA. About two or three weeks after the deadline, I got my acceptance e-mail. I know I'll get a few "cool story bro" but I don't care. I'll be the first person in my immediate family to graduate from college, and from one of the best schools in the country. We've never been in the best financial situation but the financial aid office has done an incredible job making my dream possible. To anyone who ever gets down about getting rejected, don't give up. Hard work pays off.

If you care to elaborate on his situation there might be some stuff I could help him with! I wish I knew half the stuff I did when I first started the application process, I'd love to help

Re: people discussing going to Community colleges & junior colleges instead of all 4 years at UM

I have a bachelors and masters in engineering from UM, and I've also taken classes at the local CC, Washtenaw CC (mainly computer programming classes to supplement my aerospace background).

WCC has nice facilities, and I think the quality of instruction there is OK, but not as challenging as that of UM.

I've known a couple of people who transferred from WCC to UM and were surprised at how much more difficult things were at UM, at least in the technical/science classes.

Not that I'm knocking WCC, I'm taking another class there now and may do another in the fall, but I do think you get a more rigorous education at UM and perhaps a better experience (i.e., more fun) too.

I was accepted from out of state (VA), but so were all of the other people I know who applied. From what I'd heard we had a lot more students accepted from our high school than in previous years so I thought this year they might have slightly lowered their standards.

For the record none of us could afford it so we're all going elsewhere.

with a 31 and a 3.8 from a very competitive private Michigan school. It was pretty crushing especially considering some other kids that got in, but I know I should have done better.

I am now off to Miami University in the fall, and if things at Miami aren't great then I will attempt to transfer to U of M.

Still, GBOD!

I have a good buddy whose little bro didn't get in to Michigan (and thought he should have) and will be going to Miami this fall as well.  I think he's going to play on their club lacrosse team, if they have one.

I got in with a 3.8 and a 35 ACT, but quite a few people from my high school also got in with similar grades but lower test scores. (For the record, it's a bigger public high school -- in-state). The kids who should have gotten in did and those who shouldn't have gotten in didn't. I've heard stories about students with good numbers getting denied, but all of them are from secondary sources. From my experience, work hard on your app, apply early action (I didn't for Northwestern and didn't get in), write really good essays, and you're in really solid shape.

Sorry for reviving this thread but seeing as new members can't post...

I know this is a biased source, but I'm also wondering if, assuming I get in, UM is really worth the massive price difference due to me getting an automatic half-off at tuition at MSU since both my parents work there. I know I would certainly prefer U of M. =)

I would just like some advice on getting in, what to do on my app, and some realistic chances. This is kinda long but I would really appreciate some feedback.

-4 years of Band, including Marching Band. Will be editor of Band newsletter during senior year.
-A year of forensics (impromptu speech) over junior year, won numerous tournaments and came 5th in the state
-National Honor Society, including tutoring my former 8th grade English teacher's students (since 10th grade)
-3.84 UW gpa, idk weighted
-Honors English since 9th grade, All A's there
-A.P. World History in 10th grade, Government in 11th: 5's on both their exams. A's in both classes.
-Self-studied European and US history junior year, got a 4 and a 5 (classes not offered at my school, few APs are)
-Took Spanish for 2 years, will have taken German for 2 years. Will have Spanish for 3 years if they can fix my senior schedule.
-30 ACT score
-Taking AP Lit, both AP Econs, and AP CPS next year. Econ might not run since a few people are dropping it, but I'll still take the exams.
-Top 10 percent of class
-I have kythosis (spinal issues) due to almost dying at birth, so I've had weekly physical therapies since the beginning of my life, sometimes up to 3 a week at certain points. This takes up more time than any extracurricular or anything, but I'm not sure if I should mention it.

Everything would be higher if not for freshman year...I had lots of emotional troubles and got 2 C minuses in Geometry, and somehow, an A minus in band! (gasp!)

After a 3.65 freshman gpa, sophomore year was 3.96, junior year 3.9. So, do you guys think I have a shot at UM? If I can get in, I have another question: because my parents work at MSU, I get automatic half off tuition. Is UM worth the giant price difference? I doubt I'll get any aid there.

Additionally, I am in state. Are there any other schools I should apply to?
