Daily vs. State News Dueling Columns

Submitted by dtdanUM on

This year's dueling columns are out between the Daily and the State News. The Daily has them both:

While these can tilt either way on a given year, I think that the Michigan one is pretty good. It seems even better when compared to the State one, which may be one of the worst that I've ever read. But don't ask me, see what some State fans are saying:

To wit:

This was the worst Michigan week article I’ve seen… ever. Not funny at all. Is this the one that gets sent to AA? I hope not because this article can’t hold a flame to past ones

Ouch.

I'm just getting started with the Daily as a freshman, so I'm not really what you would call fantastic when it comes to reporting/writing, at least yet anyway.

But even I can tell you that the State News attempt here was pathetic.

to sum up for those that don't want to read it:

Daily: "haha you guys suck, we have better tradition, i hate you but you are adorable"
State: "3-9! 4-0 record doesn't mean anything. 3-9! Crisler is a dump!"

I have read better versions of this in the past, the daily one was okay, the state one was pretty stupid.

Neither article was particularly inspiring - kind of the same we're better than you and we don't care about this rivalry vs. pay attention to us, we'll kick your butt and show you are are just as good arguments you hear all year long. Still, the State one was particularly bad, though looking at the author I'm not surprised. The guy was a beat writer when I was at State, and he wrote some atrocious articles then. Ah well, bring on the rivalry game.

I know The Big House practically was The Out House last season, but that’s still no excuse to lose to Utah, Illinois, Toledo, Michigan State and Northwestern there. I think the last time we lost to that many teams there, Herbert Hoover was president or something.

That there is a heck of a paragraph there, Sparty guy.

It's kind of an annual tradition that the Daily's pre-MSU article will be thoughtful but provocative, while the State News' is utter trash.

It's also kind of an annual tradition (I hope it's still going on) for the two staffs to play each other in a game of flag football the week before the game.

It's also kind of an annual tradition for them to bring out all of their jocks and us to bring out Jeremy Peters and a bunch of 90-pound Jewish girls, and then we get creamed.

The MSU article has this gem as a dig at Michigan

"We’re 4-0 and rolling over powerhouses like Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan. We could win the MAC!"

Is this the same MAC they are 0-1 against?

Actually wrote one or two decent articles while I was an undergrad. That one is just atrocious there.

I do like the description of State as adorable, but otherwise the Daily's guy was forgettable.

The Daily article was okay, a few nice shots but overall decent.

The State News guy doesn't seem to be able to write anything that isn't a cleaned up version of copy/paste content from RCMB.

The best Daily article was written a couple years ago (I think by Scott Bell?). It was a list about why we are better, such as STILL owning the overall basketball series even though we've lost practically every game in the past decade. The Sparty response, of course, was "App State."

Sparty sometimes puts out a good article, but this one was terrible. I couldn't even get fired up because the digs weren't even that good!

Wow, was that State News article lame. Most of the players he dissed aren't even starting this year, and some aren't even on the roster. I didn't even really feel insulted. Extremely "Little-brother"-ish.

3-9 is soooo last season.

and simply written the following: 67-28-5

Kind of reminds of the Daily's review of the god-awful Jodie Foster movie "Nell". The review was as follows: "Nell. Hell."

EDIT: Yes, I know this ages me and dates my time in Ann Arbor to circa 1992.

"At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having (to read) it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

Man I normally cannot stand the Daily for how much they rip on the team, so this is a nice change of pace.

This article by Sparty=FAIL. Just Awful. I love in the comment section below the guy who wrote the article posted a comment that said: "Hey, lay off everyone my mom liked it." Of course your mom said she liked it. Even if it is awful, a good mom will still say it was great. So that means nothing. Look, last season was bad, we all know that. Isn't the point to talk about this years game? So far I guess the 1-3 record by Sparty does not give him much confidence. That doesn't matter. He should act confident, typical Sparty fan. Coffee is for closers.
