Daily Op-Ed: Michigan Football a Two-Star Restaurant

Submitted by GRFS11 on

Interesting op-ed in the Daily from today, which echoes a lot of what people are saying about price increases coinciding with a lesser product on the field.  I like that the author isn't a "die hard" fan, because it shows the perspective of - probably - the majority of the students who come out for the game.  Truth is, while anyone on this blog is probably a huge fan, most of the students have a lot of other stuff going on, and to be asked to pay more for an inferior product, while having it shoved in their faces in awful marketing schemes, seems kind of unreasonable.

Hard to disagree with the quote at the end:  "Would you pay another $280 tab for a full-course Pu Pu Platter of Appalachian State, Miami (not of Florida), Utah, Minnesota, Penn State, Indiana and Maryland in 2014?"

Very well written. It is amazing that Michigan students are paying four times the amount that Alabama students are to attend football games. Yes, the same program who has won not one but multiple national titles in what many people consider the toughest conference in America. Brandon must be taking crazy pills if he thinks this can stand for another 2-3 years.

It really is unacceptable. I have to hand it to the current students for staying loyal. I at least had 2006 as a freshman. Anyway, things need to change and in a hurry.

This is where DB's strategization to wring every dime out of the paying customer pockets, including students:  Many of the posters on this board, many, if not most of the fans sitting in the other 85k seats, are alums...alums who went to as many home games as they could.  Who developed the love of the game, love of the team, love for Bo, Yost, the stadium, etc.

Today's students, pushed to the fringe, won't have those memories, won't have nearly the positive glow burning within, to share this with their own kids, to establish a dream of not waiting until fall rolls around, so we can go to 6-7-8 home games again.

Today, DB thinks selling off dynamically priced Akron game packages to some family from Okemos will make lifelong fans.  Dream on...

I am glad to have grown up in an era when I saw over 100 games and never paid more than $35 to get in.  I am also glad that I no longer live near Ann Arbor so that I wouldn't be tempted to overpay for David's "Brand."

I have a feeling that all the "I'm dropping my tickets" next year talk is a bunch of hot air.  It's like when everyone said people would park their cars and no longer drive if gas went over $2 / gallon.  Didn't happen at all.
