Daily Indiana QB Report - Backup to Nate Sudfeld Also Out for Game

Submitted by alum96 on

Well it was reported Monday that Nate Sudfeld was out for the year with a shoulde separation.  In normal circumstances you have an experienced backup but Sudfeld's 2 backup QBs from last year both transferred out of Indiana.  So Kevin Wilson was turning to a converted freshman linebacker who went 4-11 for something like 41 yards last week.  Apparently THAT guy is not going to play either... so Indiana is most likely going to rip a redshirt off a true freshman Zander Diamont.  He is listed as 3rd string. Guy weighs 175 lbs.  Pray for him.

Once he gets injured vs MSU their 4th string is a redshirt sophomore.

No idea why Covington is out at this moment or if its long term or short term.

Yes we can!

This would be equivalent of sending out a 175 lb version of Wilton Speight Saturday with Brian Cleary backing him up.  After Russ Bellomy was declared not able to play today.

So there's a chance!

(175 lbs is right around where Drake Harris weighs - so imagine 300 lb NTs, 250 lb DEs and 235 lb LBs double A gap blitzing all day vs Drake Harris).

Score predictions? MSU 55 - IU 7. I guess Indiana will try to run most of the game. MSU will just stack the box and dare IU to throw.

Good Lord. I thought stuff like this only happened on TV. Sure hope that kid does not get decapitated by Staee.

A little more info on Xander Diamont.

He's a true freshman from California whom 247 says had no offers other than Indiana.  Their composite ranking had him at #2004 and he was the #92 pro-style QB in his class.  Here are the schools where the pro-style QBs ranked nearest him (above and below) committed: Florida International, Arkansas State, North Texas, Missouri State, UMass, and Abeline Christian.  And I mentioned that he's a true freshman.

Good luck, son.

It's says a lot about your 3rd string when your backup is a converted linebacker. I think his college football debut will be a forgettable one.

Could you imagine a worse situation for a team that's on the cusp of becoming a bowl team?  I mean, Sudfeld is a really good QB for that system and puts up nice numbers, then he goes down.  One guy transferred because he was third string only to see the second string leave the team too.  Now the 4th string is out.  Man.  That's called tough breaks.

transferred to an FCS school when Sudfield beat him for the starting spot.  Too bad, because Tre is an incredibly dynamic dual threat guy, and now the Hoosiers are in for it.  Tevin Coleman is the tailback, and he's one of the best in the conference.  He's in for a busy day...

5th string 175lb QB is going to get killed, or seriously injured is an almost certainty. Take an extra blocker & direct snap to RB all day -- someone below said he's one of conference's best, so that's their best hope not to get someone killed & maybe move the ball a tiny bit at least

I was talking with a IU fan/friend last night. I asked him why would you schedule MSU for your homecoming?

His response was basically, with IU's football history we never know if we will win the game. So it is much better losing a homecoming game against a real good team, rather against a team we could possibly beat. We simply try to manage fan's emotions.

Then he added, also with MSU we should have a full stadium for homecoming (even though it will bea large portion of MSU fans).
