Our season is over. Unbelievable. I think I could honestly punch a random hockey player Monday. Its been eons since we had this many formerly known as good players come back for a year and they treat us with the poison of aggravating mediocrity. This has got to be the very worst year we have ever had. The football team blows a 4-0 start, the basketball team goes straight back to year-one level, and the hockey team forgets what they're on scholarship for. I'm conflicted over the hockey players now. They clearly need their education more than anything, but I'm not sure I want any of them within 100 miles of Ann Arbor to be getting it anymore if you're not a freshman, Carl, or Scooter.

it sucks that in my time as a student that i saw the bowl streak end and now barring a miracle, i'll see the hockey teams' tournament streak end. [/depression]

This is embarrassing. I think Red's time is just about over. I love him, but we need some fresh, young blood to kick their asses around, not a grandfatherly figure. It's just the truth. I've seen more of their passes skip over sticks than I've ever seen. They look like they don't give a damn. What a joke.

I got neg nuked for this a couple weekends ago for suggesting the same thing... listen, god bless Red for what he has done for this team and for the University's hockey program. But from what I have seen, and from what limited items I've heard; we're going to have diminishing returns from this point. is it so irrational based on the entirety of the circumstances to suggest that perhaps a change is needed? granted, the sample size (YES, one year) is tiny compared to the body of work...but really, what do you expect from here going on out? do you really think the team would be better served the next 5-7 years with our new coach after Red, later rather than sooner? There was a minority group on Rivals who were questioning Carr, starting with the Minnesota game in 2003. A game we ultimately won, but had no business of being in a position in. Mark me down as one of those people for hockey.

First post here found this blog and it looks like what I need! Anyways I watched the 1st game against UNO and man did we turn the puck over many many times. I didn't have the chance to watch tonights game since I don't have CBSCS so was the 2nd game worse then the 1st? Seems now we have no shot at an atlarge bid so we need to get down and dirty and win the CCHA.

the only thing you could possibly put on the coaching staff is the regression of the D corps and maybe the goaltending recruiting. still, there are a lot of teams with as much or more talent than M who are struggling, including ND who has arguably the best college coach ever.

Yes: D regression is on the coaches. Yes other schools have more talent and suck too; I'm lookinag at you Minnesota. They have something like 22/26 players who have been drafted by an NHL team. No: Jeff Jackson best college coach ever? Ok he's in the top tier of coaches but The Man? Nah. Ron Mason, Jerry York at BC, or even our very own Vic Heylinger might disagree with JJ ranking above them.

By the way, that was not me who suggested Lloyd be fired. Never. I love Red, I'm very proud of what he's done for Michigan. I became a Michigan Hockey fan before I became a Michigan Football fan, so I guess it cuts that much deeper for me. Going into the year, I understood that football would be a little green, and basketball might not meet expectations, but I never expected this debacle from hockey, and that's what's got me so incensed. I just think his ability to connect with young players has waned, and he's not motivating them to the point where he should get their best effort out of them. I'm looking at you, porous defense. I also think Pearson or Powers will take over once Red retires, but then I think back to what happened when Bowman retired and Dave Lewis took over the Wings. It didn't work because he was a friend first, coach second. I don't want that to happen to Michigan.

I always thought Mel/Billy for a year as an interim to give the AD some time to look, then IDEALLY they would find someone that could work with the both of them very well and keep them both as assistants, to give the program some fresh blood, but also retain a lot of continuity. Unfortunately, I don't think there are too many NHL star players-->Jack Adams winning coached--> wannabe college coaches U-M alumni lurking around anymore :-( Honestly, I think we almost have to either take a flyer on someone, or promote Mel/Billy. Of the better established coaches floating around they're all pretty much entrenched at big-ish schools. Rico probably isn't leaving Miami, as he's built it and he's alumni and, honestly, I don't think he could pull off "brotherhood" as much after he leaves Miami. Blais might be a candidate, but I don't really know enough about him. Botterill is alumni, Stanley Cup winning GM, but would he come back and could he coach? Ugh... whatever happens in the future, I would be surprised if Red didn't stay one last year. If we reach the Frozen 4 or better, he might retire, but I see him wanting to redeem himself if things turn out like it looks like they will and I think it's pretty much the common perspective that he REALLY wants to coach the game at the Big House.
