D. Warren on the Radio Last Night

D. Warren was interviewed on the radio last night. 97.1, but it was a national affiliate (Sporting News Radio?) as it was about midnight. What I took away from the interview: D. Warren is very confident in his abilities. The interviewer pointed this out. Seems to walk the line between confidence and cockiness quite nicely. He believes he can cover any NFL receiver - While he'll make mistakes, he's confident in his physical skills and football knowledge to be a force. Answered everything right. He's well spoken, seems to understand the game well, his position, and the whole NFL draft process. I was very impressed with what I heard and am confident that an NFL team will feel the same way. I can see this guy going higher than he's supposed to as long as his measurables (40 etc.) stack up. When asked about Michigan: Would winning more games have caused you to come back for your Senior year? To paraphrase "I can't really say, it would have made the decision different, but I went into the decision with the goal of doing what's best for me and my abiities, and I feel that's what I'm doing so it would have come to that" All in all, I don't think he would have come back had we won more games last year. It was a personal decision. Do you think that Michigan will be back (successful) in the short term? To paraphrase: "Yes. I definitely do. I know that the guys they have up there, the coaching staff, they want it more than anyone else and are putting in all the extra work (hahaha...he said that) to make sure they get back to winning" Don't know if this was a replay or anything, but I liked what I heard from Donovan regarding the current state of the team (which is why I listened to him in the first place) and his draft status. While it sucks that he left and I personally feel another year would've done him well, we gotta be pulling for the guy. I think he'll be a great player at the next level. He's got his head on his shoulders and the target on success in the NFL Good luck Donovan.

but I still think anything prior to the third round would be a shock. In time I think he will be a quality CB, just not in the short term, and I believe his draft position will reflect that.

I think Donovan Warren is a good example of why Justin Turner redshirted as a true freshman. Even though Warren was a Freshman All American, he had some deficiencies, especially in the area of tackling. If you look at how he improved in that regard over the past couple seasons, you see that having an extra year to develop would have been helpful. Warren has a great chance to be successful in the NFL. He took some chances that got him burned, but overall he's athletic enough and physical enough to be successful. I think he'd be great in a Tampa 2 scheme where he could anticipate throws and support in the running game.

It's really nice to hear him vouch for the program despite ducking out a year early. I'm glad there wasn't any bitterness ala Trent. He just wanted to take his skills onto the next level. Godspeed, Donovan. Do the Blue proud.

I wish Warren nothing but the best of luck. While I do wish he would have come back another year I don't blame him for going pro. I just hope he doesn't go to a team that isn't patient enough to develop him and give him an opportunity to succeed.
