If we hire Miles, I cannot even imagine what MGoBlog's new banner slogan will be.
landing spot. will be interesting to see how he does.
If we hire Miles, I cannot even imagine what MGoBlog's new banner slogan will be.
Let 'er rip?
A damn strong banner.
Without a doubt, the banner would read "Woeojuwejhdjwe"
Though I would be comfortable with any play on "Damn Strong"
Say, is that Kentucky Bluegrass? Don't mind if I do."
(not that I read all 526 of them)
"Our football team is strong and lithe."
He's been hanging out with Gary Busey far too long...
His quotes will have us scratching our heads for years.
But, if he wins -- "Drill baby, drill"
Just a guess.
Les is More
Le smiles and says "Hello"
"Les is more" will be the freep's take.
MGoBlog's will be more along the lines of "Settled for Les", no?
a speech bubble next to a picture of les miles saying "this grass tastes like rubber, I'm going back to Louisiana"
Probably not announced until wednesday...after Les speaks in Dallas
I used to think a bunch of you guys were crazy for caring so much about speculation surrounding our program. I guess once you're in the mental institution everyone around you seems normal.
I care way too much about this... and I guess that's a good thing now. Having said that, I can't wait for this to be over. Law School finals and a simutaneous coaching search is not good for you.
However comes in will get by unwavering support.
General Patton = Les Miles
Les Miles = ruse
real coach = Brady Hoke
I would not be pleased with this outcome, just as the Germans were not pleased with the outcome of D-Day. Let's hope these dominos planes aren't made out of fabric
Was it over when the German bombed Pearl Harbor?
"Let him go, he's on a roll..."
You must be a history buff.
Please God let's hope your being sarcastic.
Isn't it required "Man Law" viewing? (sorry in advance if you’re a female huma) I don't mean to offend but damn I must be getting old.
...and Les is speaking on Wednesday in Dallas ... then maybe Les isn't our next coach? Maybe Hoke will be at the team meeting today?
Present and reporting for duty or untill work is over(Like I'm going to get anything done).
Gruden says "No, heck no. I'll be back." when Tirico asked if he'll be entertaining coaching offers. Brandon's stop in Dallas could have been to set a contract framework with Miles agent George Bass. Bass is based in Dallas. No smoke or fire from Patterson. Looks like it's Les. Just my gut. Possible PC tomorrow with an appearance at the OSU game. That would be pretty cool. I wasn't hot on Miles..but I'll get behind him. KEEP IT CLEAN LES!
Thanks for the update. Much easier than skimming three huge threads!
Much as I'd like to read them, no time. Thanks.
And he'll get behind your wife/girlfriend/sister/mother. In fact, he already did. Twice.
"but I'll get behind him."
That is exactly what we all need to do, regardless of who our next coach is. I understand we all have opinions of who we would like to be our next coach however, opinions are like Lessholes. Everyone has them. And U of M is about to have the king of all Lessholes.
Just kidding Less, I love ya. Bottom line is, he wins, he recruits, and he wins! May not always be pretty, but he gets the job done.
Support the troops and support our next coach.
Do "the troops" have to do with Michigan football?
so just got in from my midnight shift, I skimmed through some threads. Let me get this straight. Schad's tweet about the buyout is untrue? Les and DB did meet last night. Les and his family w/ George Bass ate @ Voodoo Bar. Les also met with LSU officials. So in 4 or 5 hours is there going to be an LSU or UM presser?
edit: damn i type slooooow when im tired. sorry guys.
a leak today. If DB has to wait a week for job posting, no PC until tomorrow. Just a guess.
The 7-day law/rule/whatever has been debunked many times. See this U-M HR document, which says the university's 7-day rule for posting can be waived.
Also, the job wasn't posted online until Friday, so even if the 7-day period applied, the end date would be Friday--not Wednesday.
... I heard from a guy with a plumber's crack it was posted late last Wednesday on a vintage cork bulletin board in a boiler room under the Big House.
We know who really runs things around UM.
If the 7 day wait is whats holding him up...today is day 7
LC is still our coach.
Camera pans the room...who's standing off to the side of the hospital bed?
...tune in later.
WF? As in Wake Forest?
(head momentarily draws down to his chest, looks up with a steely gaze in his eyes)
Yes, sir. I understand I'm supposed to be on one of the first boats to hit the sands. I accept this responsibility to post snarky comments and emphasize things with ALL CAPS upon recieving the "go" message on Les Miles's hiring. Yes sir, I know I may be negbombed to death, it's all part of fighting for this nation.
The announcement might not happen today, but if Les has made a decision either way, I doubt it'll stay a secret by the end of the day. At some point its going to get out somehow.
Les having a late night snack of peanut butter and banana sandwiches with Elvis at the Stop 'n Rob over on the turnpike last night. There was a cigar-shaped spaceship parked outside and they both jumped in it and flew off somewhere. North, I think. By the way, have you seen my Skoal and John Deere hat anywhere?
The team meeting at 4 is likely to tell the team that a coach has been hired. You would almost certainly hear who it is after that if not get it from leaks way beforehand.
Maybe Brandon is just giving the team a summary of the events that have taken place so far. Filling them in on who he's talked to, the conversations that have taken place, etc. Then he's going to inform them that this is a process and that a decision can't be made in haste. LOL.
I think you're right. I think we're going to have some kind of news leaked shortly before or after 4pm, if not sooner. I'm expecting to hear some news around 1pm CST.
I'm selling pizzas. Those bastards on MGOBLOG play rough, no coach will ever satisfy them all! Brandon out . . .
that the meeting was set up before Dominos 1 was in Baton Rouge. So maybe it's telling, maybe it isn't.
I find it very hard to believe that Brandon hasn't talked to Hoke, and it would have been very easy for the two to have met at Brandon's home in Scottsdale, AZ (which is only about 370 miles from San Diego). It seems that many people (not including me) think so little of Hoke that no one's been bothering to track his whereabouts.
FWIW, both Chengelis and Wojo of the Detroit News late last night indicated they believe Hoke is still in the mix. From Chengelis's story posted about six hours ago:
But Miles is not thought to be the only candidate. Others close to San Diego State coach Brady Hoke, also a former Michigan assistant and thought to be a candidate, stressed Monday night they believe he is still thought to be in the mix. Hoke has made it clear that Michigan is his dream job.
She also claimed that Miles had not been offered the job yet:
A source with knowledge of the meeting [between Brandon and Miles] characterized it as "good" and productive but cautioned that no decision had been reached.
Some tweets from Wojo:
Of course Michigan has talked to Hoke. Of course Michigan HAD to talk to Miles. LSU is letting Miles explore this, and U-M is exploring too.
Remember, Brandon wants a coach. He also wants the closing of Michigan factions. Settling both won't be easy, but he's trying.
In #Michiganfootball search, I think pressure is being applied from all angles. That's why it's hard to see which way it turns, Hoke or Hat.
@rwslade66 A Michigan fan revolt over Hoke would be stupid. Just like expecting Miles to go 11-1 first year would be stupid.
So the theory would be that Brandon, in the deliberate way he operates, has now met with both Hoke and Miles and will decide between the two, while also attempting to mend a fractured fan base. People were so quick to anoint Miles the new coach after the meeting between Brandon and Miles was set that they forgot there could have been another purpose to that meeting.
When Rodriguez was hired there were probably 10-20% of fans that disapproved from the beginning and were a derisive thorn in the program's side balanced by 80-90% of fans excited by his overwhelmingly positive credentials.
If Hoke is hired the same thing will happen, but with those numbers flipped for the same reasons.
the most aggressive of the 10-20% were people who thought Miles should have been hired. I wouldn't care much about Miles being the choice if not for that, despite his age and baggage. I really don't want those assholes to be able to say "I told you so." Because, unlike them, I will support him because he's the Michigan coach, and not work to undermine him just so I can be proven right.
I don't think there will be the numbers you're talking about if it is Hoke -- after some joking around about it and hurt as Denard likely leaves, most true fans, including Brian, will support him. Again, because he's the Michigan coach, and to hell with assholes who don't get that.
Good luck mending a fractired base if he hires Hoke.
there will be a faction no matter what, but Miles might win a few games right away at least which would likely get more on board.
You don't sound like you'd be part of the solution if that came to pass ...
If DB told LM, Well, I have to go back to Mich now and think it over... it's between you and Hoke... then LM is out. At this point, after DB and who knows who else has been to BR, that doesn't even pass the laugh test. LM makes $3.5M/yr in the SEC, has won a MNC and is coming off an 11-win season.
Well, Jack, that CEO position is down to you and that kid in the mailroom we've had our eye on. We'll let you know...
No way. If that's the scenario, then expect a statement from Miles today that he's going nowhere. DB either wants Miles and has him or is waiting for his answer, or he might as well go ahead and hire Hoke.
Everyone has become utterly obsessed with this concept, especially since it seemed to be validated by Brandon in his press conference. I think it's gone way too far. Ultimately, Rodriguez didn't lose football games because of a fractured fan base, or even because of a hostile media environment. He lost because he hired Scott Shafer, lost faith in his defense halfway through the year, listened to his assistants and tried to switch back to a 3-3-5, fired Shafter, and hired Gerg Robinson. End of.* Had he done a better job with his defensive assistants and game plan, his 500 yds/game offense would have won sufficient games for any 'fractures' to seem much less significant. The team lost, so many fans remained unhappy.
I think there's a tendency to exaggerate the influence of fan in-figting on fan message boards, and there's damn sure a tendency on behalf of members of the media to push their own significance, but the tired canard perception=reality oversimplifies the issue. Rodriguez pulled in some pretty good recruiting classes despite the existence of a fractured fan base, and by all accounts he would have had another really strong one this year - until the team started losing nearly all their Big Ten games.
I really like Rodriguez, and I do feel bad that he was shit on by a lot of fans, alums, and local media douchebags almost from the moment he got here. But unless the stress from all that is what caused him to lose his sense and hire Gerg fucking Robinson, the fractured fan base had fuck-all to do with his lack of Great Success at Michigan.
* I forgot hiring Jay Hopson. This also added to the suckitude in at least some way. Thans for getting a bunch of recruits to put us in their final three before deciding to stay in the South, Jay! Miss you!
I think it's time to put the RR era behind us. It was a great idea, but it didn't work out for a lot of reasons, and very regrettably so for all involved, even us fans who don't really have any skin in the game beyond, you know, our self-identities.
We're going to have a new coach, possibly today, certainly by Friday, and it's time to get behind the program, look forward, don't look back. I'm not saying we need to suspend our powers of critical discernment -- that should be the last thing a Michigan fanbase should do -- but we need to give the new guy and our players a supportive fanbase and environment.
Is there a team meeting still scheduled today as previously reported?
I’m sure they are going to keep the lid on this until at least they have the Team meeting at 4 today. I think the Team needs to get the complete low down on their new coach before the rest of us get it.
tigerdroppings has been down all night. I wonder if LSU put pressure on them to take it down to stop speculation.
either the site has been zombie mob rushed into oblivion, or somebody spilled gumbo on the server. Whatever, I don't image much news coming out of them unless a jilted LSU employee starts leaking thart LSU's tiger striped plane is heading to Lincoln.
Which BTW-- could this be a unexpected benefit? We hire Miles, LSU goes hard after Pellini and gets him, Nebraska doesn't have a coach less than 3 weeks before NSD, and has to start a search cold for a HC who will stick to Nebraska tradition (i.e. option football and defense)? Oh and did I mention that Nebraska is in the B1G next year with us in the same division? This may not have been optimal on our end, but there is a scenario where we just may end up allright out of this...
... the best CC post yet!
the previous month had seen more CC posts like this one, as opposed to what transpired instead.
Brady Hoke will need to buy each Detroit media member with U of M ties a case of beer if he is hired. They have been pimping him hard for the job since it has been open. Which based on the Rodriguez era, makes me fear the worst if Les Miles is hired.
He's going to have to do the same with all the fans and they still probably won't be right with him until he delivers some wins.
Its a shame, he may or may not deserve the bashing, but Hoke is getting dragged through the mud. That said, as Brandon has said, he needs to listen to his customers.
Les actually has a hell of a lot more mud that the media could drag him through than Rodriguez ever did. If Rosenberg and Snyder have their claws out for Miles, they'd have the ability to make things really ugly on a national level.
Rosie drinks the blood of unborn dolphins.
If the reports are correct (grain of salt theme) that he would accept if offered, why would you say that if you didn't have it in the bag? If Michigan goes in a different direction Les looks like a fool to LSU for wanting to leave and loses his team. Correct??
Didn't the report that Miles would accept if offered come from Schad, who was wrong about the buyout? Isn't it possible that someone is deliberately feeding him false information?
From a Baton Rouge Advocate story:
[LSU spokesman Herb] Vincent refuted another report by ESPN’s Schad that LSU was considering lowering or eliminating the $1.25 million buyout Miles’ contract stipulates should he leave for Michigan, saying he didn’t know where that information came from.
But the damage is done(one the LSU side). To me the last time Les said he did NOT talk to M (which may or may not be true). This time they talked and he's interested (true or not) how do backtrack that statement. We all know that the press is never wrong and will cover their own when trapped in a corner.
By Les. However it played out last time, I think he wanted the job, and for whatever reason, didn't get it. I'm sure his people are following this closely, and know that Hoke is not going to be a popular choice with the fan base. By letting this leak, he lets all of us know that if his coming back home goes sideways, it is DB's fault, cause he would have taken the job. I'm sure Mr. Brandon is getting plenty of heat now from the old school guys to bring a Bo guy in. Well played Les!
I would say that we will find out today through a leak, but I don't think it will come from the Michigan side. With Les meeting last night with LSU I would expect them to leak stuff out of their camp.
Also, LSU has to be in a state of panic right now. If they lose Les they are going to have to get a coach, and do it QUICK. If they don' think Les is coming back I can see some smoke coming in the form of Pelini and Jimbo Fisher contacts.
... are you really Jack Swarbrick, and just set up your account while intoxicated?
to tumble. Pizza pun, woo.
I think the Hoke pimping by the Detroit media just shows how out-of-touch and contrarian they remain. I'm not crazy about Miles, but in a battle between the Mad Hatter and the Hokester, I'll take Miles any day.
I'm in total agreement with you!
... Les acts inscrutable, so later he could claim he wasn't a candidate, just a trusted advisor to his alma mater.
LSU's Athletic Department publicly says he's "our man" and "really likes it here" but through back channels says it wouldn't hold Les to his total buyout.
Brandon says he won't be rushed but is doing this search 24/7 on an aircraft, perhaps using Money Mayweather as a consigliere:
I think Brandon would rent the Big Chill's B-2 stealth bomber for the search if he could and do a low pass (supersonic) over Columbus when he's bringing the new HC back to A2 for the presser.
And for a certain Detroit sportsradio wad (GFY, MV) who insists that this search shows that Michigan is a "regional program," all I can say is the ESPN sideline reporter during the NC game (Joe Schad) is tweeting about Michigan between plays...
While I was a Brady Hoke guy, I am warming a bit to Les Miles given his awesome record in the SEC. He has lost fewer games in six years than dear old RichRod lost in three, and has four 11+ win seasons over his tenure, more than anyone else in the SEC during the same period. Logic would say he stays, but I think a certain former Michigan HC is exerting a strong pull from somewhere...
Les may be using us like it appears he did in 2007. But who cares, it's awesome theater that's playing out on a national stage in real time.
through back channels says it wouldn't hold Les to his total buyout
Who knows for sure, but the reports claiming the above was the case were likely wrong. Times-Picayune story from last night said LSU is working on a possible contract extension for Miles, and as part of the extension, Miles's buyout would be eliminated:
While LSU is working to keep Miles at the school where he has been for six years, substantially increasing his current income of $3.75 million -- one of the highest figures in college football -- isn't an option, especially given the budget crunch at the university.
Instead, LSU officials said, Miles would receive an extension on his contact, which currently runs through 2014 -- with a higher guarantee if he were to be fired before it expires and an elimination of his $1.25 million buyout should he leave on his own.
Why would Brandon meet with Miles simply to get advice and "his thoughts on Hoke?" DB would be an absolute fool if he didn't want to speak to Miles about the job itself, and an absolute fool if his focus was more on Hoke than on Miles or others. No, this seems like what it is is--an interview, which is what it should have been. Now that doesn't mean Miles gets the job, but to not consider him would just be ridiculous.
It also doesn't mean that Miles would accept an offer, either. It's not clear that Michigan can match LSU's increased offer for an entire staff dollar for dollar. LSU will be a popular choice to not only win the SEC West next year but to win the NC. He's got a loaded team coming back, whereas he would have a rebuilding job of sorts ahead of him in Ann Arbor. Many Michigan fans are doing the same thing they did with the Harbaugh speculation: assuming that Miles is an automatic get for Michigan. I won't be surprised in the least if Miles stays in Baton Rouge.
I think people are mistaking the concepts of "unproven" and "terrible" when it comes to Hoke. Would it be (at least) moderately terrifying for Brandon to hire him, given his somewhat mixed record at historically terrible programs? Uh, definitely.
Is it possible that Hoke has what it takes and would be a good coach at UM? I would say yes. So would Gene Chizik.
flying back and forth across the country (and leave Rogel's plane at Baton Rouge for several days) to consult with Miles? You consult on the phone. You sell the job, interview and negotiate in person.
I see whats going on. Leslie and Hoke, (in assistant capacity) will bring together the fractured fanbases, give Les a few years to right the ship at his alma mater, all the while grooming Hoke as the heir apparent.
Ha I was thinking the same thing last night for some reason.
Recruiting dead period ends the 13th JAN and runs till the 30th, for M/LSU/Whoever I think they'll want a coach in place to finish.
Does anyone else feel like it's 2008 again, this time without Herbie and with 3 years of dong punches?
I'm scared the "Black Cat Herbbie" will screw M up again. But it will be fun to listen to him talk of how he was right all along just three years early. Give'em hell Dez.
Given those are the choices, then IMO .... there is only one choice. Both are in their 50's, so age doesn't help one or the other. Brady's been the head coach of Ball State & San Diego State (2 non AQ schools). I don't have any information on SDSU, but at Ball State Hoke's only fame came when he had Nate Davis (QB) who is now in the NFL. I actually saw 3 -4 of their games that year (on TV) and I think he is a very average game day coach. Nice guy, loves Michigan ... and Carr and wants the Michigan job.
Les is something like 65 - 16 at LSU over the last 6 years (roughly the same as Urban Meyer at FL). During that time the SEC has won 5 consecutive BCS MNCs ... including one for Les. He recruited against the best and he's coached against the best. Les is an alum and has often stated that Michigan is his "dream job" .... so that's enough of a comparison for me.
Go Blue !
Sorry if already posted, but I just woke up and haven't seen this posted anywhere. From the official Michigan football twitter account:
that Hoke might be the better long-term option for the program but after all the Miles rumors of the past 24 hours I think Hoke would devastate the fan base. Everyone seems to be making their own internal peace with LM. So let it be written, so let it be done.
and Mr. fullback and multiple tight ends, I hope he doesn't get within 100 miles of A2.
Look at the recruits Brady has secured at SD so far...very little talent or upside to bringing any of that with him.
Considering all the talent LM could bring, or maintain the current M verbals, Hoke falls far short of that measure as well.
I guarantee that Hoke at some point will be within 100 miles of Ann Arbor this upcoming year.
he gets the Stanford job now that Peterson has turned it down.
I can't see any way for brandon to sell Hoke at this point to the fan base. He may get the Carr contingent on his side with hoke, but the fans and the Bo contingent, plus if there is any contingent left that supported RR would all be hopping mad.
Time for Brandon to sit Carr down and tell him, Miles is in, if you don't like it, if you can't support it, you are out.
Draper should be out regardless.
a tough conversation to have but at this point I totally agree. If Carr's not "all in" then he can stay on the outside of the program. DB's a seasoned CEO, I'm sure he'd be able to handle laying down the law to Lloyd.
They already named Brian Townsend Assoc. Athletic Director of Basketball (which Brian already was) AND FOOTBALL (which Draper is/was). I think this is another one of Brandon's "firings" (i.e. telling the employee you have X number of months to find a new job).
Isn't Carr already out? He's not formally involved with the program anymore is he?
Regardless, I hope Brandon doesn't have the same failure of imagination that so many fans do. Hoke has never had the geographical or institutional recruiting advantages that Miles has had. I'm not saying he could definitely recruit as well but nobody can say he definitely can't. The guy is loved by former players, coaches, media and generally anybody who knows him. He loves Michigan. If he doesn't deserve the job he certainly does at least deserve respect.
As we have seen, Brandon likes to do things on the large scale (night game, Big Chill, HD screens). That said, don't be surprised if both Miles and Hoke come to Michigan. Miles will be HC and Hoke the DC and coach in waiting. Further, I think the new staff will be a bit of a reunion.
Hoke will come because he'll be an in-house hire whenever Miles retires and no one - assuming Michigan gets back to winning - will question his becoming the HC. This isn't San Diego State. And since Brandon is willing to pay this time around, I don't see Hoke taking much of a paycut as DC if at all. I believe F. Jackson will be retained, and maybe Soup and a few other former Michigan coaches will be brought back. Brandon, at the end of the day, will attempt to avoid the external process to find Miles' successor. Brandon is setting this up perfectly.
I also wonder if LSU's willingness to pay part of Miles' buyout has something to do with him providing notice to terminate BEFORE he actually signed the Michigan contract. If so, the reduction could be related to an agreement to leave some of his old staff (which is possible because Hoke is coming), not contact recruits once he leaves (they could still contact him), etc.
I can't imagine that this coaching announcement will be a normal one. This is Brandon we're talking about.
No matter what the succession plan. Money isn't the issue, authority and resume is. I think the chances of that scenario are 0.0%. Wouldn't mind it, but...
It's not like we're asking a BCS caliber HC to take a demotion to DC ... Hoke's current position is HC at SDSU, which is not really a big stage. I'd say that taking the DC position at UM is, at the very least, equivalent to his current position.
I have been saying this for a while and have been shut down.
We need Miles now - out program is in a major tailspin and he his huge name and incredible recruiting ability would give us the necessary shot in the arm. LM could keep just about all of our recruits, and maybe even get us a few new ones. I am a Hoke supporter, but he wouldn't provide this instant boost.
At the same time, DB has said that he views this as a long term decision. Bringing in Hoke, who is 6 years younger than Miles, would set up a perfect succession plan to Miles. Hoke is a great D coach - nobody disputes that. He is also a great recruiter (although not to the level of LM).
Basically, you satisfy the Les contingent, the Carr contingent, span 2 generations of winning M football, reconnect with pretty much all of the former players. This is a huge win-win.
The question is whether Hoke would go from HC to DC. I could argue that DC of M is better than HC of San Diago. Hoke currently makes around $675,000, with a sweetened extension on the table that might get him close to $1 million. Could we go to $750,000 for Hoke as a DC? To me, it would be well worth it.
Ok has has anyone even thought about this.....LM head coach with BH as DC/HC in waiting? Now talk about a homerun!! Not sure how it would work but.....!
... there is NO WAY Hoke would take DC/HCIW. It would be a demotion and there's no chance he takes Muschamp-type money when he's probably making more at San Diego State.
This line of thinking is the classic Michigan arrogance seeping into the debate. Maybe Gruden would take OC while we're at it.
Hoke makes almost $1 million if you factor in max possible bonus's for the year.
BH doesn't make great money for a HC. He makes the equivalent of what Muschamp made at Texas. I don't think it would be insane at all. Who knows whether he would be able to win at SDSU. If not, he decreases the value of his stock by staying at SDSU. Serving as a DC at Michigan (and winning) puts him in a better position for a major gig, whether he's Michigan's next HC or a HC somewhere else.
Of course, I could be wrong, but that's my take on it. We're all guessing at this point.
Wasn't Hoke associate head coach under Carr?--which is sort of a head coach in waiting. Hoke is currently making $700,000 and his new contract offer has him possibly earning $1 million per year with incentives (source). Seems unlikely he'd accept both a demotion and a pay cut.
Would this be at all plausible: Miles commits to be Michigan coach for only X number of years, after which he will retire, and then Hoke takes over? In other words, have a definite day in place when the transition occurs. Brandon has stated he's a believer in succession planning.
I think this would be more reasonable if there was a bigger age difference between the two guys. Miles is 57 and Hoke is 52. Suppose Miles wants to coach for another 7 years, do you think that Hoke wants to wait until he's pushing 60 to take over the program? If you're Michigan, is that what you want?
This is a good point, but if Miles agreed to retire after 5 years, Hoke would be taking over the job at the same age that Miles did.
You talk about "pushing 60." Miles is doing that right now--he'll be 58 in November.
If that were true, I think you'd see the top tier OCs and DCs stepping into mid major coaching gigs more regularly.
I won't dismiss your argument, because there are coaches who have made that transition. However, I think there is also enough data to argue that being a coordinator at a BCS school with the resources to compete at the highest level is an equally satisfying position, especially if the salary is comparable.
Considering that Hoke has not hid his desire to coach at Michigan, I don't think it is arrogant to assume that he might be a candidate for the DC position. However, I do think it is arrogant to assume that your opinion on the issue is the only one that matters.
All right, give me ONE example of a mid-major DI coach that has moved from a HC position to a coordinator position. One. You mention data in your statement, I'm just looking for one data point.
It's not like Weis left ND voluntarily to go to KC (which is essentially what people are suggesting Hoke do). Weis was fired from ND and then went to KC. I'm saying give me an example where a DI coach voluntarily left a job to take a coordinator position with another DI school.
but my "data" was in the reverse form. You don't see the top level BCS coordinators jumping ship to coach at mid majors, even though there are always opportunities to do so.
As far as coaches becoming coordinators, I'm sure that they are out there but I'm not going to put in the time to verify. However, I can give you one example of a head coach who is now a positions coach by choice:
Chuck Martin at GVSU followed Kelly to ND to coach defensive backs. Spare your argument that GVSU is D-II. They were top level D-II and Martin could have certainly taken a job at the next level had he desired to do so.
I wasn't implying that every mid level coach should aspire to be a coordinator at a big name program. What I was saying was that it isn't a preposterous idea given the right situation.
Gary Crowton, LM's OC at LSU was head coach at louisiana tech and BYU before coming to LSU. Lots of other examples. Just sayin'.
I mean where a HC has left an existing job to go become a coordinator. Crowton left Louisiana Tech to become OC with the Bears. He was fired at BYU and resurfaced as an OC at Oregon. This is in no way similar to what people are suggesting Hoke do.
its unlikely to happen, but it isn't preposterous given his affinity for the university. If this is the job he really wants, he may view this as another way to get there. Lobbying from the outside doesn't seem to be working (assuming any of us are reading the tea leaves correctly) and he may just feel this is a way to get closer. Granted he has been closer before, and it would require banking on the success of a somewhat wacky head coach, so it doesn't seem real plausible, but, again, not preposterous.
..is how does this make Hoke a better candidate for the head coach job? From what I've read, people seem to think that he's a pretty decent defensive coach and a good recruiter but that his main drawback is that his record as a head coach is mediocre.
If all he's doing is going back to be a defensive coach (albeit as DC) how does letting five years go by help his resume? At that point, isn't he still just a guy who coached defense at Michigan, has a mediocre HC record-- with the exception that he would then be five years older? Why would we like him any more at that point?
Here's what DB seems to have been up to:
1/5 - Fires RR at noon, Gets on AirPizza1 to interview Tom Bradley in Latrobe, PA at 5 pm, Departs for Chicago at 10:30 pm;
1/6 - Interviews Pat Fitzgerald in Chicago, Gets on AirPizza1 to go to his home in Scottsdale, AZ at 1 pm, Gets new clothes and chills;
1/7 - Interviews John Grueden in Scottsdale; Gets on AirPizza1 to interview Brady Hoke in Las Vegas at 5:30 pm;
1/8 - Gets on AirPizza1 to return to his home in Scottsdale, AZ at 1 pm, Gets on AirPizza1 to interview various candidates at Coaches Convention in Dallas, TX at 3:50 pm;
1/9 - Interviews various candidates at Coaches Convention;
1/10 - Gets on AirPizza1 to interview Miles in BR at 2:20 pm, Gets on AirPizza1 to return home after signing Miles.
What all this means: I WISH I HAD A CORPORATE JET AND HOME IN SCOTTSDALE to either: (1) conduct my hiring projects out of, or (2) do anything.
New goal has been set.
My wife would totally misuse the corporate jet, but I hope i get to enjoy the ride! ;)
This seems as good an explanation as any. What I can't figure out is the 1 hour stop at Scottsdale in between Las Vegas and Dallas. Not enough time to remeet anybody -- unless DB really did forget his toothbrush?
I seriously think that he probably went home and got a few changes of clothes. He's like fucking Batman and Scottsdale is his Bat cave.
I wish I was Batman...
ASSuming that DB hired Leslie, who is a defensive minded coach, would it be possible, or even desirable, to hire McGee and his assistants to run our offense?
Not sure we got the points out of the offense that we wanted, but it was the most productive unit of the team.
I saw on twitter last night that Magee, Dews, and Gibson appear to be heading to Pitt with Todd Graham.
Rod Smith and Bruce Tall appear to be heading to Indiana.
Greg Frey is in contention with a guy from Maryland's old staff for a job at Indiana as well.
I'll try and remember whose Twiiter I saw it on to link it.
I'd love to see Frey and Tall retained.
Fred Jackson: Still available!
Wonder if Magee would be in line for a HC job (or at least an interview) somewhere. Tulsa, maybe? Temple?
This meeting with Miles has made for great theater. Miles, himself, makes for great theater - clock management and predisposition for grass. Therefore, because M must compete in the national theater of college football, and because their "brand" must be freshened to keep the cash cow Big Ten network buzzing along, I believe that it will be Miles. They recognize it was a mistake to ignore him in 2007, and, now, 3 years later, they cannot afford to be jilted yet again. I trust DB did his homework here, and that you will soon be introduced to your new coach - Miles. Hoke would be an admission that LC's cronies in the athletic department spent the last three years undermining RR, and that will immediately re-open wounds among RR supporters. Unless, of course, he has some other rabbit in the hat - Gruden?
Seriously? You haven't seen this nutcase picking grass during intense game moments and chewing it? If not, he does. I don't know what he thinks about Fieldturf or Astroturf, but he loves grass.
You really have this all wrong. No reason to just slander the guy as a "nutcase." The explanation he gave was that during the game, he eats a blade or two to humble him and remind himself he's part of the game (literally, the field). It's not like he pours a fresh bowl of grass clippings for breakfast. Whether or not you think the real explanation is weird, that's your opinion. He may be quirky, but everyone has been so quick to call him a "lunatic" and it's really getting obnoxious, especially considering most of us have not actually watched him or his program very carefully for the last few years.
I doubt the term nutcase could be viewed as slanderous, but point taken. His grass eating is the most minor of the reasons I would call him a nutcase. Perhaps I shouldn't be using nutcase at all. I just have an intense dislike of him. He is a dirtball with the kind of moral compass I would hate to see pollute the UofM.
Les Miles eats grass, or did you miss the /s tag?
I don't think he missed the /s tag, it was so sarcastic that it wasn't necessary.
but no question having Miles coach M against Alabama in the 2012 opener will be extremely valuable experience-wise.
Makes for a great story that I'm sure ESPN the Ocho will be all over.
Well, I would like to point out that it took two meetings to fire RR so it would seem logical that it would take more than 1 to hire Miles...or any coach. I bet they reached a handshake agreement last night and they are working on the contract/legal stuff today.
that's a real problem. The only thing that's certain is that LM wants to be offered the job. It's possible, for a variety of reasons (e.g. contract leverage with LSU), that Miles wants to be offered the job but will not end up taking it. Everything today is in LSU's favor.
Can't force a guy to sign a contract, but at the same time DB's got to close if that's what he wanted. I would like to be able to sleep again.
This is not a small decision for either the school or Miles. A "no" would have been wrapped up last night, a "yes" requires a little additional discussion. Talk of a meeting today that actually took place yesterday is all good for M. LSU could pull out their checkbook and make things interesting, but to bring back a coach that has twice flirted with the same school and publicly addressed the meeting with that school at an LSU presser? If Miles isn't taking the Michigan job he is probably going to be looking for another one anyway. Tell your boss you are meeting with another company today from 1:00-3:00 PM, and then meet with that some company a week from now at the same time and see the reception you get when you come back.
Totally agree. LSU is not going to put themselves through this every time there's an opening at UM. I don't think they'd get rid of him for flirting with UM this time, but I doubt they are goign to throw more money at him to keep him from coming to us.
Personally, I think it's a done deal -- except for Les and Kathy and Bass going out in public right after they dropped the UM group off at the airport. That one gives me pause.
Please (angry Michigan coach hating) God, not again for a long time.
Yeah, I thought that might get some laughs!
But this is the land of make believe. LM has established his outs - he can say he was merely consulting with M on candidates. LSU will happily back that storyline if he stays put.
If we offered and didn't sign him, all risk is now borne by M, and LSU gets the last meeting.
I don't think it's in LSU's favor at all. Everything seems to be pointing our way.
1. they may already have signed a contract but Miles has to go to Denver today for that speaking function.
2. LSU met with Miles last night to try and persuade him against taking the Michigan job. That to me says they are really worried he's gone.
3. As we saw with the RR firing DB likes to take his time and work things out. All that may be left is another meeting to work the final kinks out. If I had to guess right now I would say Miles is our next coach....because outside of Miles have you heard DB meeting with anyone else?
Last night everything was in our favor - LM took the meeting, didn't declaratively state he would stay at LSU, leaked that he would take the job if offered. We had him in our environment with our people - if he wants the job, close him right there. As any salesman would tell you, letting someone sleep on it often means you'll never see them again.
Again, can't force someone to sign. But it's the dealmaker's job to create all the conditions and inducements for the target saying Yes. And striking while hot is a big part of it
This is correct - either it was done last night or isn't getting done - I am guessing the former but you just never know. If not and we end up with Hoke I have no choice but to consider this process a failure on the part of DB, regardless of how they spin it.
That's the thing though, you're assuming they didn't get it done last night.
I was responding to your statement of "could take more than 1 meeting..." You probably weren't getting into everything I was getting at, but I was just making the general statement that if they wanted it done, last night was the time. And if you're going to have a handshake deal, why not just sign this paper Les?
And now I'm a little worried, b/c if they did sign last night, what's the point of the rumored LSU meeting? They would have known it was over last night and it probably would have leaked by now.
But what the hell do I know?
Double post, although I'm not sure how. I only clicked it once.
GB did you really just quote the Joker in Batman (Jack Nicholson of course.)
Because if so, you just moved up a notch. Welcome to Notch 1.
This will be me if they announce Hoke this afternoon...
and awesome at the same time.
Les is a man. He's 57. Rest of B1G, welcome to getting your ass kicked.
If Hoke is hired you win best Avatar.
in the pale moonlight? I think I have...
That is one crazy looking cat
THE PLANE CLEARLY AVOIDED OHIO AIRSPACE, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!?!
Seriously, I'm so glad I don't have class today. My f5 button is going to be fatigued.
On the "Dominos Bird Flying Home" thread I would like to apologize to all the Ohio wolverines (meals69)I might of offended. Clearly your job would be the "Red Dawn faction" in the event they would try to shoot the plane down.
Lucky I'm stuck in class right now.
Kirk Herbstreit is going to be on M&M at 9:00.
Just talk about the NC game and keep M out of it please Herbbie. I'll let the board know if he tries to bring the Whammy.
Herbbie said nothing on M and was one the phone from AZ I presume, maybe there was an UM Alum in the room with a gun to his head.
In 2007, Michigan did not contact Miles at all. I don't blame Miles for being hugely pissed off -- he was already being insulted (privately) by not even being asked, then Herbie fucks with LSU by announcing the "scoop" before they play in the national championship game against Ohio State, his alma mater. Outrageous.
A few things:
1) It seems that absolutely no leaks, or any kind of credible leaks, are coming from the UM side. Therefore, the Miles leaks are coming from the LSU side.
2) The main leaks are that a) LSU would be willing to lower his U-M buyout and that b) Les would take the job if offered
Where are those leaks coming from? Would Les leak either of those bits of information? No. Would his agent? No. Would LSU? Yes. Why? Because they think Les is using the U-M job as leverage for his contract at LSU. So they'll leak that "Hey, Les, if you want it so bad, take it", in effect trying to call his bluff. The main question -- is Les bluffing? And did/will U-M offer him the job?
Your parsing seems to make sense, will Les accept the job is the real question, as there is little doubt that he fits the criteria outlined by DB at the start of this search and thus the offer was made. Time for Les to put up or shut-up.
They will call it and he knows. LSU is not going to come out looking at all desperate or even the slightest bit needy. But he is the mad-hatter, I just think he has miscalculated if he thinks there will open arms waiting in Baton Rouge should he decline an offer.
But at the same time no one knows at this point whether he was actually offered the job or not, just like we don't know whether JH was actually offered the job or not. We can infer, we can think, we can suppose, but there is no hard statement.
Les can always say that "I spoke with David Brandon as a distinguished alumnus and former coach and player of the University and offered my advice on the coaches he has on his list and hope that I was of some help to him in this tough decision making period."
Lots of balls still up in the air so too early to draw any conclusions.
I also think that if Miles either isn't offered the Michigan job or turns it down, he is too much of a Michigan Man to do or say anything that will divide the fan base. I could easily see him releasing a statement of support for whoever does get the job.
Or, another scenario: Brandon doesn't actually want to offer Miles the job but agrees to give him a face-saving gesture: Miles can hold a press conference saying he was offered the Michigan job but turned it down because of his family is too settled in Baton Rouge, he's too devoted to his LSU team, etc., etc. Soon after, Brandon announces his choice, and Miles releases a statement of support.
At ESPN, under rumors they just had a supposed quote from Miles that said "I'm probably staying" so who knows whats going on.Take it FWIW.
Like 4 days ago to his players
There's lots of speculation that Michigan hadn't offered Miles yet (before last night), so it easily could have been by Miles' agent trying to get Michigan to offer.
vs. just communicating to Brandon directly. Unless it's an attempt by the agent to force all the pro-Miles boosters to force Brandon to make an offer to Les. Which is possible, I suppose, but risky -- because Brandon has made it clear he wants to keep his own counsel, and wouldn't appreciate somebody out-pimping his own hand.
How do I always find a way to be stuck at home during coaching turnovers? Three years ago, surgery on my foot. Now, norovirus.
Between all the coach rumormongering and the Maury Povich show, I have completely lost faith in humanity over the last few days.
maury and his little skanks
Yup. And they are reeeeeeeaaaal little, and reeeeeeeaaaal skanky today.
won't unify the fan base. Too much baggage IMO.
Will reunite the fan base, and whomever brings that in will do that regardless of what some might think of as baggage.
To that point, listen to Jerry Hanlon from a year ago, at exactly the 5 min mark. Good interview in total from a great Michigan Man.
I am listenting to Baton Rouge sports radio for shits and giggles, and FWIW, they are reporting based on "inside source"---You know that kind that were right about this, and that etc.---that it is 80-20 LSU. This is Les' right hand man, so he would know!
Coaching searches aren't fun. It looks like I have to start mentally preparing myself for the Hokemania era just in case.
I don't doubt that Brady is a fine coach with a strong supporting staff. My fear with Brady has always been in regards to recruiting. It has been a long time since Brady has recruited on a larger scale, and well, recruiting has change a hell of a lot since Brady has been here last.
The Kabuki dance with the devil in the pale moonlight continues.........
He should try explaining his take on the spread to the two teams that did nothing but play for all the marbles last night. I wish people would get off of this scheme kick when IMO, it boils down to execution, and attributes such as speed, strength, endurance etc. We have seen "pro style" teams that are successful as well as spread teams that are successful.
but I still like your avatar.
How do we know Hoke hates the spread again? Seems odd, especially since he did run it at BSU ...
Maybe we will get a surprise coach like Patterson. DB had to be doing some kind of business in Dallas since we know that he interviewed MIles in Baton Rouge. We can't forget that DB has said that some people have contacted him about the HC job so there has to be more than Hoke and Miles out there.
So he could ascertain Miles interest and seek his advice and say privately to any big Miles supporters amongst the U of M family that he discussed the opportunity with Les but Les said no thanks and recommended the next coach as a great hire for U of M.
So, announcement of someone else with all bases covered including Miles and Carr?????
Must be nice to live in that cloud! You are basically saying Miles or bust, what if Miles does not want to come here? We should know by now that any coaching hire can be pretty hard to evaluate for at least 3 years, right?
regardless of who it is?
Have fun Boilerin up
Goddamn Carr and his goddamn only champsionship since 1948. I hate that asshole.
Seriously, you're a fucking moron. No sugarcoat. Go cheer for Sparty - I hear they're on a hot streak.
Replace "Miles" with "Stoops" and you are a ND fan.
I live in texas sonofa....
On another note, I don't think I've ever trolled so many different sites at once just, constantly hitting refresh just to see if news has hit yet...
about not having time to pay attention to news stories, blogs, fanbase, etc- but he clearly knows PR and appearances!
Im still hungover from Gruden hype. Please, someone convince me why Les is an awesome coach and a home run hire. I want to believe!
he seems very happy at LSU and that his family is very happy there too. He just finished an 11-2 season and his Tigers should be a Top 10 or even Top 5 team next year.
Michigan is a great place to be also. But I think people are really diving off the high board on this whole thing. 1 + 1 does not equal eleventy billion. Christ, a meeting took place. That's it.
Miles is probably interested in the opportunity and what Brandon has to say. LSU fans cannot blame him for this interest.
But being interested and accepting the UM head coaching position (with all the tacked-on, fan ,admin and alumni conditions, such as, for the love of God, don't hurt the alumni's feelings by installing any spread offense plays! UM football right now is an ugly and incomplete construction project where the previous contractor got shit-canned.
Les is 57. At some point he has to be asking himself "why should I take myself and my family from a comfortable situation in Baton Rouge to quite possibly a very uncomfortable one?" and "Aren't I getting too old for this kind of shit?". After all that's gone down with Lloyd's departure, Les Miles would be right to ask himself these questions.
Everyone is saying "Les has to come home".
Right now he's winning at LSU and that's his home. Ann Arbor won't ever be his home without winning first.
I could be wrong.
At any rate if Miles is taking the job, I hope he goes Colonel Jessup on MSC, Brandon and all UM alumni across the planet: "I run my unit how I run my unit!"
We know nothing for sure right now, and the idea that Les has to take the job is pure lunacy at this point. Careful about thinking Les has to do anything.
Bc his boss sent out a letter acknowledging their season last yr was more or less unacceptable
Very much agree with this analysis. With Miles, fans' expectations are going to be sky-high, and if he doesn't immediately meet or exceed those expectations, fans are going to quickly sour on him. I can't imagine Miles wouldn't take that into account if Michigan offers him the job.
With Hoke, the expectations are going to be much more reasonable and thus more likely to be met.
In the end, the only thing that's going to mend the "fractured fanbase" is winning--particularly beating OSU and MSU--and contending for Big Ten titles again.
The expectations should be the same regardless of who ends up being the coach.
Maybe they should be the same, but in reality they won't.
I understand your argument and I agree somewhat, but Baton Rouge certainly has not been overly friendly toward Miles since he took over for Saban. From everything I've read, the natives have been restless for a new coach for a couple of years, and to say they have no perspective would be an understatement. One year after he led LSU to the title, people were already calling for his head because the team had lost 2 games. I think that's why you see so many coaches in the SEC burn out quickly and leave - the pressure is unbelievable to win at all costs, and for most of them it just becomes unbearable. People may bitch and moan in Ann Arbor, but my guess is that it is still far more welcoming than being attacked mercilessly for going 11-2.
is like crawling on hands and knees in the glass-strewn alley behind a meth lab and licking the pavement.
Stoney just gave MGoblog a shout out as the BEST PLACE TO GET ANYTHING MICHIGAN FOOTBALL on 97.1!!!!!!!!!!
how does it feel to be right for once in your life?
Is missing a %
I have a strong feeling that Les Miles will not come to Michigan, and we will forced to name Brady Hoke as our next HC. I hope Les comes, because in all honesty I'd rather have kept RR than get Hoke.
Any chance its Gruden? I'm still holding out hope.
If it's Miles is Dilithium gone, gone, gone, jumping like a catfish on a pole?
I thinbk it will depend on who Miles brings in for OC - if it is a guy who supports the spread attack, Denard will probably stay because he'll still be the highlight threat. That's why Hoke was such a scary choice - he was going to revert back to the old pro-style setup from the Bo/Carr eras, and that would have meant another paradigm shift.
I may be wrong here, but what's your evidence that Hoke will go back to pro-style sets? My understanding was that he ran a pass-heavy spread at BSU. Are you just going by Brian's (rather dubiously context-free) "basketball on grass" quote?
I would be deep into overtime on this website. I take full responsibility for the problems with the server. I am so tired of reading the rumors. Please God...make it stop.
Miles is such a known commodity to Michigan, and particularly DB, that I can't see DB conducting a long interview or sell job. The longer yesterday's meeting was, IMHO, the more likely it was about process than yes or no. I could well be wrong but that seems most likely to me.
will literally explode and destroy the entire internet if there is an announcement that Miles is returning to LSU. Entire computers will combust right in front of your eyes until there is only ash. Not saying that such an announcement is going to happen, but it will be quite the seen if it does.
Doug Karsch on 97.1 just said that--based on people he's talked to--the idea that Miles to Michigan is a done deal has cooled down this morning. He thinks Miles, Hoke, and "unknown candidate C" are equally likely right now.
More proof that everyone is guessing. Last night Michigan met with Miles so everyone assumed that they would get a deal done. Now, because a deal hasn't been announced yet, they are assuming that the deal fell through. They don't know anything.
Nothing against Doug Karsch - I really have no opinion about him either way - but 97.1 has been one of the worst offenders in terms of misinformation and outright falsehoods throughout the RR era and the coaching search that I have a hard time taking them seriously at all. I think Miles has the inside track of taking over, and "unknown candidate C" is probably some non-starter like Gruden or Malzahan (sp?).
This was just added by Tom Dienhart on Twitter:
'Michigan will meet with Les Miles and/or his people Tuesday, media reports indicate.'
Is this someone following up on yesterday's report that UM and Miles would meet today, or is this new and Brandon and Miles are planning on meeting again today? Didn't Brandon fly back to AA last night? Is he still there? If so, where is this meeting taking place? Do we know any tail numbers of any LSU planes? lol.
Dude just got around to reading yesterday's newspaper. I haven't seen any such media reports since the rumored Tuesday meeting was bumped up to last night or anything about a second meeting. There's a NetJets bird scheduled to depart Willow Run for Scottsdale (DB's Camp David) shortly after 11. This may not be over.
Karsch just said he heard the 4:00 team meeting is about strength and conditioning and other off-season stuff.
I started a new thread... getting close to 250 here. Trying to streamline my F5 approach to the day.
Damn Glad! To have you at Michigan, Coach Miles !
I don't know what all the Yip Yap is on here as of late. Someone even stated if we can have RR back....WTF? THIS is our ONLY option kids (I say kids because, I believe a large portion of the posters are 20 something). Les is the only one who can bring GREATNESS back to Ann Arbor...And he will ! Now sit back. chew on a blade of grass and let the man Work!!!
GO BLUE and GO Dave Brandon...Great Job!
