My F5 key literally fell off a couple of days ago. Not a good sign, either about the coaching search or my use of time.
This is maaaaybe premature there, ESPN. Maryland #1 FWIW.
My F5 key literally fell off a couple of days ago. Not a good sign, either about the coaching search or my use of time.
What's this F5 key that you speak of?
We will be hitting F5 every 5 seconds today to see what we missed while reading for the last 4 seconds...
This is great. I do enjoy this picture.
if they would let OSU borrow that?
a +1 for this.
is it ok to eat grass in the winter?
as long as it was not covered by yellow snow. unless you ar into that sort of thing (yellow snow), then it is all good.
Dave Brandon is trying to steal LSU's cookies!
LSU is weirdly and suspiciously fine with it...
react if they whiff on Bo Pelini. My feelings on Rich Rod getting fired were not the same after Jimmy H left us at the altar. My cousin lives down there and he says most of the people he knows think they win in spite of Miles. I disagree, but LSU fans can think what they want. Reactions like that are probably sour grapes in the face of what they see as inevitable. I'm excited for this guy and ready to give him a clean slate and a chance.
God, why would the LSU fans complain about going 10-2 every year? Michigan fans would never . . . .Oh wait.
and that makes me nervous. Seems as if they know something we dont about Les Miles... I guess its possible that he has thrown away his corrupt and wicked ways which were instilled when he landed a job in the SEC and now LSU needs a son more wicked in the ways of darkness & sorcery.
Seems as if they know something we dont about Les Miles
Seems you a word.
If true, that would make him.... what.... the third highest paid coach in the country? Yeah. It has come to the point where we just need a damn coach, but I don't feel good about this hire. It just seems like we should have been able to get someone else for that amount of cash.
From LSU's perspective, what can you do but shrug your shoulders and move on when Michigan is going to grossly overpay the guy?
Regardless of how this situation ultimately settles out, I can't wait for this long Michigan nightmare to end and we can get back to what's important - obsessing over 17-year-old boys and how fast they run.
and of course their 3* ratings.
I didnt know you were on mgoblog
"Who taught you how to MGoBlog? Who!"
"I learned it from watching you, Mom! I learned it from watching you! (sobbing)!"
+HTTP 403 error to you
Don't forget pad level
we don't necessarily obsess over how fast 17-year-old boys run . . .
we obsess over how fast they say they can run.
He doesn't take the shell off of lobsters. He eats them whole. Like a man.
That there's an LSU team meeting this morning? Maybe Michigan gets good press by allowing Les' players to learn about the hire first?
well where did you see that news?
Supposedly none of the players are on campus until next week. Classes don't start until the 18th.
They'll all find a nice form letter in their mailboxes when they come back to campus.
Ahh just hire a coach already!!! Just no Hoke.
I can't wait for this to be over and we can start focusing on playing football again, not looking for someone to lead our football program.
any time now DB..jeez
You can't take a hoke?
I keed, I keed...No hoking around.
I have a hunch who the new coach is, but I'm going to keep it a secret for now ....
wow, that came out of left field.
Doesn't Michigan have any alums in the CIA that can use their espionage skills to tap David Brandons phone or office? My thirst for knowledge on this subject is borderline insanity.
of slot ninjas.
No. Anytime the cia or nsa came to campus, there were sit ins and protests so no one could interview.
My old roommate used to work for the NSA. But I don't think he was in the sneaky espionage division, though.
unless you can prove one of the coaches was a foreign national.. you'd want someone in the FBI & DEA... they have nearly unlimited domestic wiretapping powers, especially if the tip to instigate the collection was "I heard this guy talking about eating grass"
since this all began. Every day that I leave my house, I half expect the grass to be blue and the sky to be green. Its all becoming a muddled blur, fueled by alcohol and a boner-inducing love for maize and blue. I need help. Pleeeeze.
I just completely disregard whatever comes from TigerDroppings at this point. Most of the people that are just as uninformed as all of us. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go stalk the PizzaPlane.
This is really pissing me off. I have no idea what is true or what to believe.
If Les is truly playing us against LSU to get a contract extension then he can go to hell.
If my boss knew how much time I spent on this site the past week, he would dock me half a weeks pay and I wouldn't even argue with him. This announcement will be great for me on 10 different levels.
nah, I need the money.
My billing this last month will be a joke. Please let this end soon.
...until Corso put on that duck mask. Then I just wanted to stadium to implode. If Miles is introduced as our next coach, maybe we can make a Les Miles mask for Game Day picks.
When they had him with his pant legs rolled up standing in the kiddie pool full of rubber duckies...awkward and sad.
this is the same guy who's in those Hooters commercials... just comes off a senile and creepy to me
Oh how far the mighty fall.
do it baby, do it
I want Gus Malzahn!!! If Miles is announced today I will feel a huge let down. It took Brandon a week to interview one guy who was deemed a backup plan 3 years ago? Wow, thanks for the effort Brandon. You could have waited another day or two and interviewed Malzahn and then fallen back on Miles. I dunno, I feel like Michigan cheated with this potential hire. No creativity, no sense of excitement.
Not to mention the blatant lies Miles told to the LSU players and Admin if he takes the Michigan job. That will make us look great. Good thing everybody already hates us.
People keep saying that he told his players he'd be back, but other than three athletes who were paraphrasing his post Cotton Bowl statements and providing their own hypothesis as to what he'd do, there is not a single credible source from inside that meeting. Like I said before, Les probably told his players the same thing he's been telling everyone else:
"I love it here, why would I go anywhere else?"
This is what is called a non-denial denial. It can be interpreted as, "He's staying" or "I love it here, why would I go anywhere else. Oh yeah, because of cash doll-hairs and it's Michigan". You either read it one of two ways and it's probably based on which school's colors you wear on Saturdays. People need to stop saying that he promised his players to be back, because it just gives the uninformed haters more stones to throw at the guy who is probably going to be our next coach.
I have never heard anyone else say doll-hairs outside my friends, awesome.
Maybe we run with the same crowd? Haha.
Sources? You want sources? This whole coaching search is heresay. Until they start allowing reporters with note pads and tape recorders into private team meetings, I'm afraid I won't be able to give you actual quotes.
Given the LSU player comments, it sounds like they have been assured by Miles that br will be their coach next year. We can debate what he actually said, but regardless it seems like the players would feel deceived if Miles comes to Michigan.
The point is, can't we find anybody else?
It's hard not to play what-if, like if this conversation with LM would have happened before Herbstreit spoke up three seasons ago.
Here's a link to a report on that with audio of what was said: Jeff: Source says Miles wants to stay - with assurances
A source close to the LSU program and a friend of Miles has told me the mad hatter is not looking to leave Baton Rouge. But he would like to see a commitment from the administration that he's not going to be fired after an eight win season.
LSU did not roll over his contract or extend his deal after LSU won eight and nine games after the 2008 and 2009 seasons. In fact after the 2009 season, LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva called the 2009 campaign a "nice season," but wanted more from the program.
Miles would be the first to admit LSU should play for championships every year, but if the Tigers come up short of that goal, he would like to see the administration stand behind him, instead of giving him a luke warm grade.
I'm not sure what Miles will do after he meets with Michigan. I put the chances of Les returning at 70%. But if he does go, fans might wish for him to return if LSU has a nice season with only eight victories in 2011.
We'll bitch about 8 win seasons here too.
Our AD and fans always stand behind our coaches 100....wait.....80, no...uhm......50....really...okay then 30%, so no worries there.
Plus, we will give you plenty of......okay then....a good amount of.......uh......some time to do what you have to do.
Part in for Michigan!
That's as interesting as Pitt interviewing that assistant coach from Pennsylvania State. I'm not sure why Penn State fans made such a fuss about it, I guess they must have wanted to hire him too.
Does anyone know what city Ucla is in?
He sounds like a budding sports journalist.
Hey, I hear the Freep is hiring and he sounds more than qualified.
Any thoughts on who Miles would bring in as an OC?
According to tiger droppings they think as much of Crowton there as we did of Gerg here.
He could easily eat 100 hot dogs in under 12 minutes. However, his momma always told him, "A gentleman takes his time." That is the only reason you've ever heard of that little Japanese fellow.
It is also why Coach Miles's love-making sessions are known to go on for days, sometimes weeks at a time.
They change the rules to 10 minutes and made everyone sign an eating contract. Kobe!
A request: As it looks more and more likely that Les Miles will be our next coach, I'd like the members of this board to make a concerted effort to make more jokes about grass-eating. I really haven't seen many of these jokes on the board over the past few days, which is a shame because they are such comedy gold. For those who have been making those jokes, let me assure you that they are HILARIOUS, and entirely original. You should be proud! If only others would follow your leads -- unfortunately, finding a "Les Miles eats grass" on these boards recently has been like hunting for a unicorn.
So please, please, make a concerted effort to mine this unique and exciting source of comedy. You will be doing us all a tremendous favor. Godspeed.
He chews on it and his saliva mixes with the chlorophyll causing a potent chemical reaction.
That is how rocket fuel gets made.
Little known fact: when saliva mixes with chlorophyll it can cause a euphoria and a "loss of time" in the user.
Les Miles invented time. And bowling.
need to buy gas because he pushes his car everywhere he goes...oh wait, thats Tim Tebow, nevermind.
Chlorophyll...more like bore-aphyll!
I think the grass eating jokes are already getting old.
Yes, Fuzzy. Yes.
Although, I'd like to see some retro resurgence of Greg Robinson plushophilia.
They can't afford to replace the carpeting in his office every week.
NeEd MoRe CoFfEe. SoMeOnE hElp!?!?!?!?! Good morning to you all. Lets go get us a coach!
just like last night. They are likely getting as much traffic on their site as us but we continue to be operable. Go MGoBlog!
We should not get to cocky about servers staying up and all that. We're not exactly the top of the food chain here.
Might think about an upgrade before the next coaching search, which if all goes according to schedule will be Dec, 2013.
The tubes be fickle.
Has Coach Rod been fired?
It's in the past.
Bored and figured I have nothing else to do. Might need some help modding because I opened it up to some other outlets today.
i even dreamt about all this last night. Now I'm snapping at my husband and son. And work? Looks like another day of getting very little done. Seriously, my husband was popping Tums last night and my head was killing me.
Dday? dooms day or decision day?
Day of Days.
The "D" in "D-day" stood for "day" -- when planning an operation, you didn't know when, exactly, it would take place (that decision came later, and/or was secret), so the date and time were referred to as D-day and H-hour. I believe it was standard practice throughout WWII, even after Overlord (for example, for landings in the Pacific) became popularly known as "D-Day."
I imagine Brian, et al., are thinking "decision day" or something like that, but the correct usage also works, if you think in terms of D-day and H-hour being the unknown day and time in the future when the era of the new coach begins at Michigan. Is today D-day? That's top-secret, mister. We'll know only when the invasion begins! Leakers will be hanged.
Maybe the D in D Day stands for Dave.
from the sound of it it seems to be between Miles, Hoke, Gruden, and maybe Patterson.... and Miles appears to be the frontrunner, and while Miles is too unscrupulous for my taste he does produce some good teams, and more importantly the Big Ten doesn't allow oversigning.
With the exception of Hoke I can live with any of these options... Patterson seems to be a long shot, Miles is a good coach, for the first 58 minutes anyway, Gruden... well the guy has a superbowl ring (as a Head Coach, not a coordinator), is probably the most sought after former coach right now, and has shown a strong interest in the Michigan Job (please, please, please, please, please, oh please let it be him).
Last week our options looked more like this:
Hoke: 48-51, nuff said
Petersen: No way he's leaving Boise St.
Random guy we found walking around Ann Arbor: Admittedly the most promising candidate
Now we have actual candidates who are actually interested. I was not a supporter of his decision last Teusday, but If he can bring in John Gruden he'll be a god among men in my eyes.
Les Miles is God. You're just lucky you said that before he got here.
maybe he'll cut me in favor of a more talented incoming poster... oh man, what'll I do?
Please identify, with source or link, a single, solitary statement directly from Jon Gruden's mouth or keyboard that indicates "he has shown a strong interest in the MIchigan Job."
Courtesy of poster skwarosh (sp?) yesterday, this is what Jon Gruden has written himself about the Michigan job, in his book Do You Love Football?!
"In the Dayton football media guide, players had to list their ambition in life. I put down that I wanted to be head coach at Michigan by the time I was thirty-nine. Don’t think I’m going to reach that one. Why Michigan? Because at that time I was still that divorced-from-Notre Dame, pissed-off kid, so I wanted to go to Michigan and kick the hell out of Notre Dame. I really wanted to be the head coach at Notre Dame, but at that time I just couldn't make myself state that as an official goal."
In case this didn't sink in, reread this line:
"I really wanted to be the head coach at Notre Dame,..."
Unless you can produce something factual and tangible, Jon Gruden has never expressed for public attribution any concrete strong personal interest in being the head football coach at Michigan. He has, however, in print, expressed a specific personal desire to be the head coach at Notre Dame.
I was scouting the Rivals 100 last night for recruits who have yet to commit, trying to find players that had interest in LSU - but weren't from Louisiana. There were quite a few (some even had interest in Michigan as well). Hopefully Les might be able to convince some of these undeclared recruits to join him in AA... Any thoughts?
Keep it together, keep it together, keep it together.
Happy premise #1: We will get a coach.
Happy premise #2: There is no Angry Michigan Hating God trying to squash us.
Happy premise #3: Even though I feel like I might ignite, I probably won't.
Look, I have to show it to the Laker girls!
We know Miles has been shady, deceitful, and sometimes stupid- the over-signing, the 'clock it' call, the lying about the 'clock it' call, the clock mismanagement, possible NCAA sanctions coming, etc.
So what is the appropriate response if he's hired?
Do I support him because he's our coach but dislike him for his practices at LSU?
Or, do I support him as if it doesn't matter until it happens at UM?
Short of him coming out and saying (which will never happen) that he knows he needs to do things differently at UM, I don't think I'll ever be able to get it out of my mind.
What does an upright and 'All In' Michigan fan say about this?
How's about you support the coach of UM for the good of the program, and so what happened to RR doesnt happen again. What the hell is wrong with our fanbase?
It's like, if you want to use logic or have a conscience or pretty much do anything besides blindly support anyone who associates with Michigan Football find something else to do!
GO MICHIGAN ROBOT FANS!!!!
This is an entirely appropriate response to a completely asinine comment. It's kind of disgusting how quickly everyone wants to ignore anything remotely negative about Miles know that there's a solid chance he's the next coach.
I'm just having a very hard time believing that Michigan, having just been placed on probation for the first time in the history of its football program, is going to hire someone who is currently in trouble with the NCAA and has been widely criticized for oversigning.
The problem here is that:
We obviously did not get harbaugh. Hoke would be a disaster of a hire and lead us into years of mediocrity at best. Miles is the best chance we have of winning, which should be the only goal of a Football Program. All this nonsensical bullshit about winning the Michigan way and blah blah doesnt mean shit in the grand scheme of things. The only thing that matters is that we win, and win a lot. If that means Miles is our coach so be it.
The college football landscape is different than it was when Bo took over, or even when Carr took over. It is a business today. The NCAA is a business that makes millions off these college athletes. Pay the players, let coaches oversign, then let the players transfer and play right away when they do. Start treating this whole operation as what it is. This is ridiculous.
With all due respect, I totally disagree about winning at all costs.
Everyone looks at USC with disgust for what happened.
I think you're mixing two different topics: Ethics & CFB as a Business
I played at a small school, and when we beat shady teams, I loved being able to look them in the eye and know that we did it with integrity.
Call me naive, but winning only matters when it's clean.
I am not talking about two different things. I am saying that it should not be unethical to oversign players and it should not be labeled as winning at all costs either. It should be looked upon as being a strategy to win the most games possible, which is every coaches goal.
If the NCAA actually recognized what they are, instead of living in denial, then college athletes could be paid and if a school did oversign they could move on and play that same year. In other words, it would be a job like environment which it should be.
Dude- cool it.
I am not starting a fight- I had an honest question about things that I will find hard to stomach if Miles is hired.
I supported LC, I supported RR (obviously), and I will support the next guy.
I just feel weird about acting like it didn't happen just because it wasn't at UM...
For example, how would you feel about Lane Kiffin? Ya, I thought so...
I am not a member of the moral police for the NCAA. He is a douche, however he has no bearing on UM. As for Miles, he played here and coached here. Stop acting like he is some cheating SEC scumbag. Oversigning is not against the rules in the SEC. If the NCAA was so worried about it they would outlaw it. The B1G has a rule against it, so guess what? You don't have to worry about that here.
Let's also notice that he 'could careless about Lane Kiffin'.
I think he's missing a helping verb...maybe 'be'?
But then I'd have to assume he's indifferent about Mr. Kiffin, which, of course, contradicts his later statement that he's a 'douche'.
I think people have seen a pattern of behavior from Miles that makes them uncomfortable. He has been caught lying and his oversigning (albeit not against SEC rules) is unethical; especially the way he has gone about it.
It is okay to use logic and reasoning to determine whether a new coach is the right fit for this job. I don't know who told you you had to fall in line, but they were wrong. Figure things out for yourself. It's much better that way.
What I meant was how would you feel if Kiffin was up for the job?
I assume, because you called him a douche, that you'd prefer to pass on that based on what he's done at other schools.
I'm not trying to zero in on over-signing- I'm trying to make a point about true character.
I am not acting like he's a scumbag, but he's given us material that can be read into, has he not?
And as for having played/coached here- there are plenty of douches that have played/coached here- I could care less if someone has ever been officially associated with the program or not. That doesn't make them immune to poor decisions, and it certainly shouldn't be a prerequisite.
First things first: stand strong in character. We can worry about if someone has coached/played here after that.
Take a breath and read the posts to which you're responding.... I don't think there is much debate that Miles is sort of a douche-ey SEC scumbag. I don't think anyone is 'acting' like that; he routinely goes into ethical grey areas that would be illegal, or at least looked down upon to the point where people don't practice them, in the Big Ten.
Oversigning and greyshirting may be within the SEC rules, but that doesn't make him any less slimey.
If we hire him, it sounds like most will support him because at that point, what good does it do to be derisive? I'll support whomever we hire because I want Michigan to be great again. But at this point, he's not our coach and it's fair to voice concerns about past conduct, whether they're illegal or not within the Big Ten.
Keep it in perspective: Yes, its January 11 and we don't have a coach, but whether we had one yesterday or get one the 13th, this is a dead recruiting period and if it takes DB two more days to find the best choice, I don't see why we shouldn't fully vet our candidates.
Lane Kiffin is different. Lane Kiffin hasn't won a national title (actually, he hasn't won anything). That makes things a lot different.
supporting or not supporting is a false choice. If he does something that makes him not worthy of your support, it is not unreasonable to express your misgivings. It's like being a patriot; it doesn't mean blind allegiance.
Right- what I'm saying though, is do I give him support while in the same breath saying that I don't like the way he did things at LSU and I hope he's not doing them here?
Or, just support until it happens here (if it does, I know) and then throw in the caveat?
He may be a scoundrel, but he's *our* scoundrel.
He's a moron, but our moron.
We're hiring a coach, not a saint.
on a "win-at-all-cost" veneer if we hire Miles. Part of my love for Michigan is my belief that we believe in sportmanship as much as winning. The basketball debacle and the minor, but embarrassing football training time scandal, should make us all ultra-sensitive to this aspect of the game.
Some people thought we took on a "win-at-all-cost" mentality when we hired RR since he was an outsider from a different conference and ran an offense we weren't used to. They would think that someone like that doesn't understand all that about sportsmanship on par with winning.
To them, Les Miles is a return to the sainted Michigan ways and they have no idea of these things the insiders on this board pick up on.
Excellent point- it's easy to forget there are thousands of fans who get all their news at 6 o'clock from the local guys who don't even scratch the surface on these types of things...
even if Miles is a "win-at-all-costs" guy, the media might choose to play down that angle because they're happy with the hire. Just like they made s**t up in order to pin the "win-at-all-costs" label on Rodriguez. My advice -- do your best to discover the true facts and make up your own mind, and don't worry about the "veneer" that the media and outsiders place on the program.
Hope it's just an SEC thing to stay competitive (as they have won line 17 straight MNC).
It's okay for Miles to be shady as long as he's doing it for compettive reasons, I suppose. What we really don't want is someone who is dishonest to teenagers just for the sport of it - that ain't Michigan Manly.
I just can't use the ends to justify the means...I want to win the right way.
If the deck is stacked against us and we have no chance without compromising, at least we've still got our integrity.
That's worth more than shady wins to me.
Whether I failed to convey sarcasm in my post.
I'm wondering if I was too slow to pick up on it...
Sorry about that- either way, I wasn't attacking you.
Sometimes you have to read post or twelve before you can learn someone's humor...
+1 to you sir.
I appreciate your diplomatic and honest questions regarding Michigan fanhood, hiring Les Miles, and coaching ethics. There are too many smartasses like me on this board, to be honest.
Was not implying it is ok to be shady as he cleary has been in some cases. The problem it seems in the SEC is that if you are honest to a fault you may not last long. Again "everyone is doing it" does not make it ok, but it is what it is. I would hope/assume that all that crap is in the past if when he gets up here.
I guess more then anything I am desperate to get back to watching us dominate Saturday Afternoons again and based off the realistic coaching candidates available I think LM gives us the best chance to bring in the top notch recruits to do this.
he'll be told he needs to do things differently at UM.
I may be in the minority on this, but to me it had no connection to any specific coach.
To me, it was a theme- a principle that we could abide by to give our team the best chance of success no matter who our coach was.
If it was used just as much with the new coach, I wouldn't have thought twice about it.
I still consider myself 'All In', and it has nothing to do with RR because he's not our coach.
Allen took care of that yesterday by getting rid of all the old coaching staff's merchandise.
Does no good to whine and complain before he even gets here. That's where all the negativity towards RR started. I've been completely opposed to the idea of Hoke being our HC and will continue to be until a new one is announced. But if it does end up being Hoke, I'll shut my mouth and hope for the best.
I think that's the best approach. This is one area where we really should ask ND fans for coping strategies. They have a lot of experience with these things, after all.
Definitely not whining or complaining- just asking honest questions about the guy...
So, does this cancel out Gruden? :(
I wouldn't cancel anything out yet. I would still prefer Gruden but I doubt he is coming to AA.
During the "Nissan Shift" Pregame brouhaha yesterday they showed a driver shifting gears.... in an Automatic. WTF??!!?!?
Seriously. If your premise is "Shift" you couldnt do it in a stick-SHIFT car?!?!? Damn Nissan.
Oh, and I also love that even though we've been down recently we're still totally national news and worthy of gamebreaks in the NC game
In reality, I doubt many Nissan cars even come in a stick. Maybe the 370Z, but I'm sure none of the sedans or SUVs even have that as an option.
It's a sad how the world has become.
Sports edtion. Six-speed manual transmission.
Actually, the world still drives a lot of manual transmissions. The United States, no.
i should taper my expectations. It took me forever to find a stick for a new car (VW CC 2.0T. Love it). I had 2 Jeep Wranglers before that, all 5 speeds, it's the only way to drive
And other similarly ridiculous portmanteaux. They're basically automatic transmissions with the option to shift gears, and have become fairly common. The legitimate manual transmission is dying a slow death in the United States, sadly.
"informed us that Les Miles was to be introduced as the next Michigan head coach today at a team meeting scheduled for 4pm"
I saws it, I posts it. I don't vouche for it. Obv he can't be in A2 and Big D at the same moment in time... unless, well, if he can, then isn't that a recruiting advantage? Is taht an NCAA violation?
I suppose the team can be TOLD at 4pm, and meet him tomorrow.
The one comment on that blog is hilarious.
EDIT: OK now there are more, but they're all kind of funny.
That cite is grammartically and spellingly, uh, challenged.
I had a comment on there and the Mod deleted it, hahahahaha.
Detroit at it is finest.
Did you read the 1 comment? Brian called the dude a derp and said, "You don't know shit", funny.
Brian's a potty mouth.
our fearless leader! Take that, moron who makes up news to look cool!
I love Brian's comment in the blog:
DERP - You don't know shit.
Cracks me up. The 'Dtown Sports Blog' just had more hits in 10 minutes than it had in the past 6 months....
I DON'T feel better after that. My stomach hurts. That damn beatboxing chipmunk at 3:02 almost killed me.
it looks like Les will be using the Acadian King Air for his trip to Dallas. Scheduled to arrive from Lafayette at 10:23 and then fly to Dallas, arriving at 12:47.
I can't say how accurate this info is, but Doug Karsch on 97.1 said on his show this morning that he had heard that the 4:00 meeting is about strength and conditioning and other off-season stuff.
Per Angelique's twitter feed, this meeting was scheduled last week.
but this is supposedly Les Miles flight to Dallas this AM for you flight tracker fans.
Miles to Michigan, Pellini to LSU, Rodriguez to Nebraska. The circle of life.
Do you really think a Big 10 team would even consider hiring Rodriguez with his conference record here? Not a chance.
I definitely think he'd be welcomed at places like IU, Purdue, Minny, etc. Yeah, his conference record was weak, but let's not act like this team was going to go 9-3 and 10-2 every year with a different HC.
IU, Purdue, Minny did account for 4 of RRs Big Ten wins.
Well, I don't see Purdue or Minny pulling in Top 20 recruiting classes. If he can't do it here with diminished talent, I don't know how he can do it at Minny or IU.
I was a huge RR supported, but I'm not sure you can claim that 9-3 or 10-2 would be impossible or even extremely unlikely with a different HC. You're takling recruiting different players then too obviously. That changes everything...
If I had Taylor Martinez, I would definitely consider hiring Rodriguez
Some reading to pass the time, got it off tigerdroppings. Some people crack me up.
"The owner of VOODOO BBQ in Baton Rouge is reporting that he saw Les Miles sign with Michigan last night in his restaurant."
And by "sign," does he mean, order a Sweatervest Voodoo doll and stick pins in it?
Or, equivalently, order a TPryor voodoo doll, and have it declare for the NFL draft?
Definitely credible. Have to believe the man that owns the best BBQ in the state.
What time does the late mid-morning thread start?
Just one more grass joke, then I gotta go
I'm going to get fired from my job before this thing is over! I've already asked my IT Dept for another F5 button.
Hell, it's 11:10...when does the late morning open thread open?
Hi Trevor, this is (insert SEC coach here).
We like you, but we are unsure if you and other recruits will pan out.
Option 1) You go sign with the Valdosta State Blazers and start division II football immediately.
Option 2) You sign with us, get a chance to be a (Gator, Tide, Tiger, etc) or... if your not that good, we cut you, and you play at the Valdosta State Blazers next year.
Personally, if I were a boarderline recruit, and all I had to do is beat 2-3 other guys in spring football to be on a SEC team I may take that chance. The other guys may have medical or academic issues. The worst thing that happens is they go to another school the following year. Furthermore the SEC allows this so the coaches are playing by the rules.
Or option 3, you go play for Mississippi, or South Carolina or Iowa or Michigan St or pretty much any Big 12 school who will certainly offer you a schollie if you got one from Bama or LSU or Auburn and you get to play D1 football without being afraid of getting cut and finding a new team.
however if you are a Southern kid - with a Crimson Tide bedspread and die-hard Bama fans for family - are you not going to take your shot? A 25-35% chance of the big dance as opposed to resigning yourself to the mid-powers permanently? Only a delayed year of college to lose?
I'm not saying there aren't some kids like that, but your OP implied there were two choices - SEC elite and D2. Not every kid commits to his childhood favorite (as we've seen this year) and a kid can still stay in the south and play for Arkansas, MSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Clemson, all who would almost certainly take a kid with a Bama offer. And you'd still have a shot to play at a high level - Arkansas played in a BSS bowl and USC (NTUSC) played in the SEC champ game.
I am a bird-in-the-hand type guy and would council my kid or relative to take the other more "sure thing" scholarship than the "maybe" scholarship.
But there are a lot of kids and families that I am sure are willing to take that shot and risk going for the brass ring.
I just don't understand why the coaches are being vilified for offering that shot take it or leave it, when the conference rules allow the practice. Bitch at the SEC commissioner or NCAA. A coach signing the number of kids he is allowed is not "dirty" as people are implying. No more than RR trying to medically redshirt Devin when he is not really hurt - the rules allow this - wink wink.
A scholarship is not a sure thing anyway. Many kids are an injury, bad test or one more "team rule violation" from being cut every year. There is no guarantee he goes to Ole Miss instead of LSU and doesn't get cut in a year for whatever at Ole Miss.
To be fair about the Big 12, I believe they were the second-highest number of over-signers behind the SEC. Don't think kids at Texas A&M or Oklahoma aren't "encouraged" to leave after a couple of years. But yeah, I agree with your general point about kids having to go in with their eyes open.
Of course, we're totally sure that this is the script Miles has been following, because he's a Michigan Man after all. It certainly doesn't look anything like this:
Coach: We really think you've got a chance to be a multi-year starter and an all-conference player here at our school. Our coaches can't wait to start working with you.
Player: I've heard some things about oversigning and scholarship limits.
Coach: That's overblown by the media. We always honor our commitments to players like you who show their commitment to our school.
If you are being recruited by one of the big SEC schools, chances are you have a better fallback than D2.
Crappy photoshop of the day! Let's hope I never have to use my powers (or lack thereof) again
something about the colors is not quite right.
You must be crazy. All this F5ing
Maybe we'll get word at 11:11 on 1/11/11? Oh wait. That's now!!
I know he could back out if something bigger came up, but he is scheduled to speak at the AFCA between 2 and 3 this afternoon. I don't know if the specific time has been mentioned more than "he'll be speaking at the Tuesday General Session."
Maybe he'll hijack the conference to announce his move to Michigan. Some might view that as a dick move, I would find it to be an awesome move. One great big awesome dick move.
We should just set up a frickin live blog for this. It would be easier to follow.
Haven't posted lately, haven't even read the threads. Actually getting work done. It will be nice if we get a decent coach. I'm still depressed over the whole RR thing. Of course, you move on, but this wasn't a happy three years for me. And now another SEC MNC. Grrrh.
a knitting club--something like the DAR--to sit around and drink Vernor's floats and talk about what might have been. We'll have to see where Rich lands before we book private planes to go watch his games, tho.
Mmmmmm, Vernor's floats.
and meeting with Brandon so not to hurt any feelings, if I am reading the grass leaves correctly.
Early next month we will be able to track MGoBlog's in-depth coverage of Les Miles' culinary exploration of tire-rubber-field-turf-sand-stuff on the new Verizon iPhone 4 using the fancy MGoBlog app currently available in the Apple app store...
Tell your wifes tell your kids, Apple's getting all up in here
That's awesome! Man, I miss old Simpsons episodes.
At least Brandon's not on a boat.
We need someone at that conference! What is Miles wearing? What variety of grass is he chewing? Fescue likely means he's Big Blue bound, while Bermuda says he's staying on the Bayou . . . .
I don't get why chewing grass means he's going to work for IBM?
in case Fuzzy and others weren't sufficiently annoyed by the clever and totally original allusion to chewing grass. No need to thank me . . . .
Can we get a "Kentucky," jonny_GoBlue?
YOU are NOT the father!!!!
Damn. Time to turn off Maury.
For the record, I texted my cousin in AA this morning and asked if he's seen the mgojet fly over lately. He said no, but said he did see Les Miles himself at Mr. Greek's having breakfast this very morning. I must admit though, this cousin of mine is a bit of a joker.
I heard that he was wandering around near Scorekeeper's trying to figure out what happened to Dooley's. GPS currenlty shows him wandering aroung on North University looking for Drake's candy shop.
at Steve's Lunch. At least Blimpy's is still in AA. Might have a chance to keep him yet.
Steve's lunch is gone too? For F- sake. Please tell me the Brown Jug is still there and that Village Corner has not become a CVS
Village Corner is gone now.
Building got demolished
I don't live in Ann Arbor any more, but I read online somewhere that Village Corner closed. No idea what's there instead, but the old VC is long gone (shed a wine tear).
I heard VC went out of business. Not sure of it's status as a CVS...
Village Corner is being relocated. The building it was in is being demolished to make room for a student highrise (yet another one). Village Corner's owner is looking to move it to a different location but that hasn't been determined yet. Brown Jug is still alive, but Touchdown's has now become Blue Leprechaun. And Mitch's reopened briefly, but is out of business yet again. Any other questions?
It's been reported that a number of students heard him say "What the fuck? I swear Mitch's was on the other side of the street."
Has anyone checked the Martian Room?
I'm sure that's not the case. By all accounts, Les is not in AA right now.
Hard to believe, if Miles staying at LSU is a done deal, that the AD wouldn't have released a huge statement saying so. Even if they're working out stuff in his contract, I'd think he'd want to put an end all this speculation. On the other hand, if he was definitely leaving, wouldn't LM be calling a team meeting?
says they are still on a semester break
they kill us in the Dallas Turkey Sacrifice Bowl, don't say I didn't warn you guys. Les only eats grass to improve digestion in his second stomach--that's nothing to hold against him. The very mediocre offenses he has fielded despite prizing wins from betwixt his buttch**ks, will prove more of a problem. I don't need lectures from any of the smart guys here about how luck, in fact, DOESN'T really ever catch up with anyone. . . it WILL still catch up with him if he comes to SNAKEBITE, MI.
I'm fairly certain that firing RR will come back to bite UM at some point, but I think it was time for a change given what we've seen out of a vocal portion of the fanbase (including the media) these past few years. You can't have a coach basically working off of 1-year contracts while the local guys throw cheap shots in the media - it is counter-productive and won't ultimately help the program. I know that RR will be a better person for triyng to make it work at UM, and I'm sure the Wolverines will recover. But everyone needed to give it more time, and failure to do so is the most saddening part of the whole experience.
Hated to see RR rgo. But it is water over the dam. No turning back now. I do think that with Warren and Woolfolk active this year, that might have been enough to give us another win or two, stay more competitive against the big boys, and give RR another year. But "what ifs" and "if onlys" don't help us now.
What team have you been watching?
We may or may not know who our coach is by the end of the day, but I can tell you that there is currently no deal with Les Miles right now. Doesn't mean there won't be by the end of the day. Doesn't mean anything except if people are thinking there already is, there isn't. This comes straight from the most trusted mod on Rivals who has been absolutely right about everything thus far during this whole process.
Now that's an unimpeachable source.
....it is. Not Rivals the main site but The Wolverine. Michigan's Rivals site.
you mean "Balas has spent the last 3 weeks flailing around wildly," then I agree completely.
But only b/c this whole "process" has been nothing short of a roller coaster ride. But Balas has reported the facts and left any doubt out there as opinion only. When he reports something as fact, it is. This, he says is fact.
or he has no idea what's going on and is just guessing in a vague way so that he has something to tell his subscriber base.
This comes straight from the most trusted mod on Rivals who has been absolutely right about everything thus far during this whole process.
All it takes to be right thus far is to repeated state, "No one knows anything." I've been saying that for weeks, thus I'm one of the most credible sources on the internet, so you can take this as gospel truth:
The University of Michigan will take an unorthodox approach to the football program when they use mad (read: evil) science to resurrect General George S. Patton to lead the Wolverines in 2011. While looking to the military is a risky move, the university feels that Patton's special brand of zombie leadership and undead discipline is exactly what the program needs.
Your opinion that know one knows anything is nothing special. Balas has repeatedly said himself that only Brandon knows what is going on. But there are still facts to be reported, and when Balas reports something as fact, it has proven to be so.
Which is exactly why he'll be reporting the zombie Patton-as-coach plan later today, I'm just giving you an inside scoop.
In all seriousness, though, at this point, anyone who isn't Brandon doesn't hold much water. Not because the source has been wrong in the past, just simply because of the very closed door way in which Brandon is running things. I don't have anything against Balas or Rivals (I don't even read Rivals, so I have no idea who Balas is), but this situation has been such a need-to-know affair, that any and all insider knowledge is suspect in my opinion.
In the interests of full disclosure, whenever you hear me refer to "my source", this is who I'm talking about.
The MOD must be getting lucky if he was absolutely right on everything so far (unless his name is Dave Brandon).
Here is the vid of les miles eating grass...
I believe thats libby.
Three new tweets of interest (to me at least)
1) mikerothstein: Sitting outside Schemechler Hall. Towncar with tinted windows pulled up about 10 minutes ago and is sitting there waiting for someone.
2) mikerothstein: This, obviously, could likely be nothing.
3) According to @ESPN_BIG12, Les Miles not in attendance at FBS coaches meeting this morning in Dallas but still scheduled to speak at 3 ET.
me don't count so good...
Yeah, it was two (#1 and #3) and then #2 came up while I was typing the post. Forgot to change it. I'm exhausted following this coaching search non-stop. Cut me some slack, please.
the Spanish Inquisition!
yours are too. Jake Fisher is taking visits to MSU, Gators, Ducks... probaly already posted in one of the earlier threads. We cannot lose this kid
Yes, as little as we talk about him, Jake Fisher is one of the most important members of this class. He's the only real OT (certainly the best) when we didn't take a single OT last year. If Chris Bryant commits, he will also be one of the most important. We need more linemen.
bank and let Miles wave out of the window at the press conference. Keep it going up to TC. This kid was at almost all the home games. Hopefully he's just keeping options open, but one of the first we need to lock down. Whoever the new guy is
Does anyone know if any of the fired coaching staff has been hired elsewhere?
a few of them might end up with Todd Graham at Pitt.
I've heard that O'Sullivans is hiring.
Damn! Them too?!
Lovin' Spoonful on Main!
Where are the planes this morning?
WHERES THE FUCKING PLANE!?!?
Les Miles: A return to the days when we played down to our opponents and ended up with 8-9 win seasons while people will slowly return to complaining about the coach who never gets younger..... I hope that Les Miles is smarter football-wise having had success in the SEC. I suspect he is not and I hope Denard isn't dotting the I formation next year, but that would still be better than Denard at Oregon next year......
How exactly do 11 win seasons in the SEC lead you to believe that Les Miles is inevitably a return to 8 win seasons in the Big 10?
Has anyone else seen that flight is SCHEDULED from Willow Run to Scottsdale, to depart in about 20 minutes ? It was supposed to leave 40 minutes ago. Its previous flight - from Westchester, NY (where the search firm is). Hasn't taken off yet though.
Its not DBs plane, but it belongs to some plane rental company (NCI), I don't know how this would fit in though . . .
to be speaking in Dallas from 2-2:50pm CT that's 3-3:50 ET..That makes it REAL hard for him to be here at 4pm for the players meeting. If it's him. He'll be here sometime after the speach or tomorrow.
He said he had a "fantastic trip to Hawaii", and I believe him. That being said, the only logical conclusion I can come to, is that our new head coach will be Greg McMackin. And I for one, welcome the addition. Aloha! :)
How pissed would everyone be if LSU AD made a statement that Les Miles has agreed to a re-structured contract that keeps him at LSU until 2016 and additionally, they've added Brady Hoke to the LSU staff as a "special advisor". I'd think Brandon might go kamikaze with that Domino's plane.
I moved to Switzerland in September, luckily with Slingbox and the interent I haven't missed much, but wow the last few weeks have been crazy trying to keep up with the 6 hour time difference. Can anyone tell me...
How is Dave Brandon able to fly around on Domino's corp jet searching for a coach etc.? Isn't that illegal use of corporate assets or is Michigan paying.
Why on earth is there a rumor that LSU would be willing to lower or waive the buyout I thought that the buyout clause for Miles was put in only in a situation where he would leave for Michigan. This doesn't make any sense. Maybe just a senseless rumor. Or, the SEC showing pity. Or, maybe with an agreement Miles would not pursue any of the recruits he worked on for LSU.
What is the rumor that Miles was never offered the job during the first search? Is this just posturing or has any one corroborated this?
4 pages now.... moving on to D-day thread 3.0
Apparently 2 LSU radio stations are reporting LM staying at LSU.
I've spent the past few days forcing myself to be OK with a Miles hire. I swear to god, mgobleu, if he stays at LSU I'll slap that moustache off your face!
Just kidding, but I will steal that pointing stick of yours out of spite.
i want this to be over so i dont have to check mgoblog and twitter every 30 minutes.
"unofficial" announcement from "sources" tonight on espn and a press conference tomorrow afternoon... please...
