CWebb v. WIllie Cauley-Stein
Chris Webber called out Willie Cauley-Stein on Mike & Mike today, saying he'll never be a starter in the NBA, that he's an underachiever, etc.

The biggest difference between Webber and Cauley-Stein is that Cauley-Stein hasn't been caught yet.

And the big deal is what exactly...?

I heard the interview and I didn't think he was being harsh but brutally honest. It is silly to think Cauley-Stein will have a big impact next year when he's only averaging 7 ppg against college competition.

If you extrapolate WCS points per minute it comes out to 18 on average. The guy only plays 26 min a game and is the best defender in mbb.
40 minute game is 10.7 ppg and all players sit out a few minutes at least, so pretty average. Maybe CWebb knows what he is talking about.
This idea that you stretch out someone's per minute production over a full game is skewed because no one plays 40 minutes. It would be much more meaningful to extrapolate over like 33-35 minutes, which even the most high-usage guys don't surpass.
But if every game went into 6OT, he'd be averaging like 15 points!
WCS (as you UK lovers apparently refer to him) is averaging 9.1 ppg in 25.8 mpg. What math gets you to 18 ppg?
He's the 5th leading scorer on UK despite the most playing time, and the 7th based on ppm.
His game translates towards DeAndre Jordan. It took Jordan 6 years to become a meaningful player. Chris doesn't think he is as good as Jordan. Chris knows a thing or two about it.
Hey, I kinda like him and think he will be around the NBA for many years--decent big men always are. But he has limited upside.
is the OP getting negged for this? I think this topic is definitely worthy of discussion. Everyone around the nation has assumed that the top 6-7 players for Kentucky will get some run in the NBA (I agree). Booker, Ulis, and the Harrison twins will stay another year, or should. Everyone else who played meaningful minutes is probably looking to jump ship. If C-Webb or any member of the media thinks that WCS is going to be a dud in the NBA, why shouldn't they be able to express that opinion without such hate being spewed at them? I hope WCS proves him wrong, I don't want to wish negativity on anybody. However, based on pure statistical probability, there is no way that those 6-7 guys from Kentucky will ALL be NBA studs. Why couldn't on of them be WCS? Just the nature of the beast. I'm not a huge NBA historian or anything, but I imagine there are more cases of players not panning out in NBA, versus panning out.
Booker will be a top 15 pick. I'd be surprised if he stayed another year.
he's a 6th man currently? I understand that he COULD make the jump next year, but his stat line doesn't scream top 15 to me....(10 pts, 2 reb, 1 ast) which is just my opnion, I'm always open to friendly debate. He shoots the rock well 47% FG and 41% 3pt. However, the glaring thing (and this is probably nit picking) to me right now is his A/TO ratio, it's about one for one. I get that he isn't a point guard, but you have to be better than that, IMO. I think he SHOULD stay next year, learn to become a better distributor, maybe understand what it means to start every game? I don't think he wants to go to the NBA and be a 6th man his whole life and add more depth to his game. Just like Stauskas SHOULD have stayed this year. I'm not hating though, if he wants to get paid, he should get paid.
from the little I've seen him play, the kid looks pretty darn good.
from the little I've seen him play, the kid looks pretty darn good.
He's getting negged b/c he originally posted about what a travesty it was that Michigan was getting bad press for the T/O, Cwebb, Ed Martin and Fab Five controversies b/c of what CWebb said about Cauley-Stein.
MgoBoard collectively responded to his over the top reaction with negs.
He has since redacted that part of his post.

Everyone hates us anyways.
March 31st, 2015 at 10:33 PM ^
Notre Dame, Ohio, and MSU already hate us. That's a pretty big contingent of people. Add that to the rest of the big ten. They hate us cause they ain't us. Harbaugh

that's a small fraction of the country my dude...
March 31st, 2015 at 10:57 PM ^
But unquestionably a relatively large fraction of college football fans. And we've been pretty mediocre for the past ten years or so.
March 31st, 2015 at 11:15 PM ^
dude there are over 100+ teams/schools...you can't possibly believe that 3, albeit huge fan base, schools constitutes a "relatively large fraction" of college football fans...have you been to the south/sec country? have you been to the west coast?
March 31st, 2015 at 11:28 PM ^
true, but ND gives you virtually all the Catholics which is way larger than a normal school
Michigan has more Catholic alumni than Notre Dame, at least that what my dad always said. It makes sense considering the relative sizes of the two schools, and you better believe this Catholic roots for Michigan.
EDIT: Jim Harbaugh is Catholic. Good thing we got ND off the schedule, otherwise he may have been tempted to throw the game to them, since he's Catholic and virtually all of us root for ND.
I believe we're the most despised college fan base out there. I lived in DC for 10+ years and everybody seemed to have an opinion on us and why we suck. Down south was the same thing. We have tons of alumni out there (I think PSU is the only school with more living alumni) so we have pretty good exposure. The hate for us is definitely represented well across the country.
People hated us because we were good in everything. Nobody hates Vanderbilt.
March 31st, 2015 at 11:02 PM ^
No, we hate you because most of you are insufferable, elitist, cocksucking walmart wolverweenie fans. Believe me, Ohio State does not envy M*ch*gan in any way, shape or form. I'll raise your Harbaugh with NATIONAL CHAMPIONS. Soon to be back to back.
March 31st, 2015 at 11:09 PM ^
Can you raise it with 11 National Championships?
Your coping mechanism is awfully thinly veiled. Your shrink should be embarrassed.

I would agree. Kentucky is lacking nba starters other than maybe towns, who I think is overated

To have this great a season with so few good players.
He said with few NBA starters, not that they didn't have good players. Plenty of very good college basketball teams have no players destined to be NBA starters.

Is this where we start a hashtag campaign of our own to out-outrage BursleyHall82's outrage over standard fan mudslinging over Twitter?

Other fans hate Michigan. This just in.
March 31st, 2015 at 10:40 PM ^
I've never understood sports fans that get all worked up over what other fans think. maybe its being a Michigan fan in Ohio but I don't give a fuck what other fans think or say.

BTW, I agree 100% with Webber
March 31st, 2015 at 10:52 PM ^
UM grad here who thinks Webber disparaging WCS is uncalled for. WCS may average only 10 ppg but he also averages only 26 min, like many others on UK.
I hate to see any "analyst" take shots at college kids. WCS is by all accounts a very good kid. He came to KY as a 2-3 star athlete who has really raised his game. Bad move by CWebb imo.
March 31st, 2015 at 11:06 PM ^
Yeah, he was 6-10 and a top 40 player coming out of high school. Let's not act like he is some diamond in the rough that proved the critics wrong. He is like any other UK player...the most physically talented player on the floor. I do agree that Webber's comments don't seem appropriate when directed at a college player with boatloads of talent (it's not like Calipari has actually coached him) but I agree that we are working with less perspective/info that Webber. So to give the academia answer; it's a bit of both.

beat me
March 31st, 2015 at 11:26 PM ^
Holding the same views as an OSU fan makes me feel gross inside...
Sure, I'll beat you, why not? How do you want it: bat, brick or something else?
Point is this: WCS is a college kid trying hard. By ALL accounts he's a great kid. He's getting called out by a former pro athlete who has a very very checkered past. I have been a UM mbb season tix holder since 2001 and sat thru some very difficult times - which CWebb was partly responsible for. For any UM fan to line up behind CWebb and support him is a joke. Not only was CWebb a root cause of our mbb problems, he has never come clean. He cheated. Banners were taken down due in part to his acts. He's the wrong guy to call anybody out. He has not even made amends with his teammates. So, no, nobody should call out a college kid who is working hard and staying clean - least of all Chris Webber. Take a TO Chris and STFU.
He is not being "called out" for being a college kid trying hard. Webber is correctly pointing out that it is waaay premature to be comparing him with NBA guys like DeAndre Jordan.
He is not saying WCS is not a great college player, he is saying it is time to dial back the instantly-great-NBA-player hype.
March 31st, 2015 at 11:13 PM ^
Dude, he was a 4 star, top 40 player like every other kid UK recruits.
March 31st, 2015 at 11:17 PM ^
4* for a 7' high school kid who scored 5 pts in AAU game is meaningless. The kid was a football player who barely dabbled in hoops.
