Crowd for Penn State
October 19th, 2009 at 4:14 AM ^
This is a big game for both teams so the crowd should definitely be into it. The only difference may come from the fact that most Michigan fans despise Notre Dame while our Penn State stance is more neutral. Personally, Penn State has always been my second favorite team. Either way, I'll be screaming and making lots of noise from my wonderful seats located right behind Joe Pa.
October 19th, 2009 at 7:13 AM ^
Scream as loud as you want cause he probably can't hear you anyway. As for the maize out question it is printed on the season tickets as a maize out, hopefully it's warm enough to have everyone participate.

Offer him pudding.
October 19th, 2009 at 4:36 PM ^
He's an old guy, and over-fond of the pregame kimchi.
October 19th, 2009 at 7:24 AM ^
Warm or cold, people are able to put their Maize tees on top of whatever it is they are wearing! It should be about getting it done, and not making excuses!
October 19th, 2009 at 8:18 AM ^
a Maize colored sweatshirt or coat.
October 19th, 2009 at 8:40 AM ^
maize colour coats have you seen in your life?
apologies if i missed the sarcasm.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:04 AM ^
Doesn't have to be "maize" for it to work. My brother has a simple yellow winter jacket, I think it's a Nautica brand. Either way, yellow isn't that uncommon a color for a coat, especially if you're a fan of Michigan. Though blue is obviously more common.
There are definitely lots of maize/yellow sweatshirts out there.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:32 AM ^
how many yellow coats there are but im sure its very easy to find a Maize colored Michigan one or a sweatshirt if you wanted. Please we are Michigan fans lets not act like a Maize colored article of clothing is hard to come by.
October 19th, 2009 at 11:09 AM ^
I, for one, will not tolerate a Michigan Man/Woman that would dare wear yellow in place of our beloved Maize. While the two colors may seem close to the untrained, non-Michigan man eye, they do, in fact, clash. If people wear yellow, we'll be the laughing stock of both the college football and fashion worlds.

this will be my first time to the big house this year and i hope the crowd is just as loud for this game as they were for ND. i do agree with jeffro that PSU is more of just a "big game" type atmosphere while ND is "big game plus i hate these guys" atmosphere. i kinda like jopa too, i mean how can you hate a guy who gives so much back to the school he works for?
October 19th, 2009 at 9:03 AM ^
I mean, this guy has done it right since before Pennsylvania achieved statehood, and represents everything good about college FB.
That said, LET'S KICK THEIR ASSES ON SATURDAY! This game is hucking fuge! Looking for Stevie Brown and the rest of the LB's to show up big and keep DClark under wraps. GO BLUE!
October 19th, 2009 at 9:20 AM ^
I hope its hostile. PSU fans HATE us..when i went to Happy Valley last year i got yelled at all day.
PSU is also the team i hate the most but im from PA.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:26 AM ^
I think Michigan having been on a 9-game winning streak against the Lions had something to do with their hostility towards you. How many of their seasons did Lloyd ruin through the years?
October 19th, 2009 at 6:03 PM ^
Judging by their online community, I'd guess every year.
October 19th, 2009 at 10:08 AM ^
For some reason the PSU homers consider this a rivalry. I used to love telling them that they need to win occasionally for it to be a rivalry...then they won ONE.
Now I just say once a decade still doesn't make a rivalry. Gets them all fired up.
Someday I hope to take my son to a Michigan-PSU game at the Big House.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:35 AM ^
This game IS a Maize Out. Forecast calls for a few showers and temps in the high 40s. I doubt we'll see as much maize as we did for ND. However, if you're looking for a good maize shirt to fit over your warm clothes, I recommend this...

I own an XL and it's pretty big on me, so they run large, perfect for slipping over a fleece or other jacket, and it's easily purchased through our MGoBlog sponsor.

It's too bad this game wasn't on Thursday (or Thursday's weather wasn't on Saturday) - supposed to be in the low 60s. Heck, even Sunday's weather would be very nice - low 50s with sun, no rain.
This, of course, can and most likely will change about 17 times before Saturday. Here's hoping for good weather.
October 19th, 2009 at 11:10 AM ^
Yeah, unfortunately, this weekends game is shaping up to be a lot similar in weather as this past weekend, and it was COLD on Saturday. You've been warned.
October 19th, 2009 at 6:08 PM ^
are totally useless. I doubt it'll be warm, but you can't tell if it's going to be snowing, frigid or what right now.
This past Saturday wasn't that bad either. When the sun was out, it was downright toasty.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:39 AM ^
It's all about layers. Couple of long-sleeve shirts or a long-sleever under a hooded sweatshirt, plus aforementioned maize shirt on top.
October 19th, 2009 at 10:01 AM ^
FWIW, a couple of the PSU games we've had at home have been fall break lately, including the '05 game. That could explain some of those years past.
October 19th, 2009 at 10:39 AM ^
The '07 game was rocking. I was seated in section 3, row 1 and it was extremley loud for that last PSU possession.
With what's at stake, plus the noise-bouncing of the suites, plus as Hannibal noted below the fact that we haven't had a big game at the Big House in over a month adds up to one very loud and very hostile Michigan Stadium.
October 19th, 2009 at 10:16 AM ^
Their fans are really arrogant (I'm related to many of them) and one of their coaches, Larry Johnson Sr., apparently negatively recruits Michigan (and OSU) by saying that they don't care if they graduate black athletes.
October 19th, 2009 at 10:25 AM ^
Their fans continually do the "WE ARE! PENN STATE!" chant as they walk to the stadium, as they enter the stadium, as they file through the concourses, and as they enter their seats. Then they wonder why opposing fans consider them arrogant.
Now, I realize this isn't exclusive to PSU, and I personally know several Michigan fans that are this arrogant and boisterous. However, it seems to be a fanbase-wide thing with PSU, especially in as a visitor. I just remember being very annoyed before the '07 PSU game, and then laughing at the PSU fans who got mad when the game was over and everyone was cheering and chanting "It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine!" and "WE OWN! PENN STATE!"
October 19th, 2009 at 10:27 AM ^
Yes, the average PSU fan in my experience considers their team to be everything that is right and true and holy about college football and that anytime they lose it must be because of some sort of conspiracy or hiccup in the space-time continuum.
October 19th, 2009 at 10:36 AM ^
If you want to lose about 30 minutes of your life, ask a Penn State fan how he/she feels about 1994.
Wait, don't do that. No one should be subjected to that much whining & crying.
October 19th, 2009 at 10:28 AM ^
Heh. The "We own, Penn State!" chant is great. The first time I heard it was 2002.
October 19th, 2009 at 10:21 AM ^
The crowd is going to be crazy for this game. It's the first big home game in over a month and everyone knows how critical it is to win this one.
October 19th, 2009 at 10:51 AM ^
Does anyone remember the "Lloyd Carr clock" that was making the rounds among PSU fans after the 2005 game? It was a maize & blue clock with Lloyd's face on it, and it would add a second to the time at "completely random" points. I'm trying to dig it up, but can't find it... I totally love it.
October 19th, 2009 at 11:03 AM ^
will always seem to be a less than hostile rivalry, I just don't think both fan bases have it in them to hate each other. Why would you hate another program who has a similarly strong history and who's fans don't act like they're drunk truck drivers.....because they are drunk truck drivers.
Most....check that ALL....of the animosity from PSU fans has everything to do with Michigan winning 9 in row in the series. That can breed a lot of hostility.
PS by favorite moment from 2007 was seeing a PSU student outside Michigan Stadium with his brand new Appalachian State shirt giving it to all the Michigan fans before the game.......app state this, app state that.......he was being a real horses ass.
After the game he was standing in the same area waiting for his friends with the most inconsolable sad clown face you've ever seen. It was quite a site to see thousands of Michigan fans walk past this tool in his Appalachian State shirt.....and the subsequent ribbing that he deserved.

comment is a pretty good retort to those who bring up the horror.
Sadly, it doesn't work at all with Oregon fans.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:14 PM ^
Whoa, wait a second... this game, at this point, is a very accurate indicator of how far or not far we've come, and this game is absolutely HUGE in terms of our future. I do not care who is coaching on their sideline this week, although I respect JoePa, they are the ENEMY this week, and I will be every bit as hostile for them as I was against ND - and hopefully everyone else does the same. There are recruits coming here, this is for 6-2 and a realistic shot at running the table (or having just one more loss), for a decent poll ranking, for pride (46-17?!?!), and to completely knock them out of the Big Ten title race.
We want this one BAD, we should definitely show it!
October 19th, 2009 at 4:52 PM ^
It all depends on the amount of RAWK music we play over the PA. (Seriously, I'm sure we'll have a good crowd.)
As for PSU fans, I don't understand why people dislike them so much. From my experience, their fans have been pretty classy. The "We Are..." stuff is just standard fare. Almost every school chants something like that (and our fans chant "Go . . . Blue" on the road, too).
October 19th, 2009 at 6:13 PM ^
The way PSU fans reacted to THE HORROR (there's youtube galore of it). I have a special place in my heart for beating PSU now. JoePa and the lions can go 0-12 for all I care.
This feels every bit as big as Notre Dame imo.
