Credit to Phil Coke
Listening to the Tigers in the office today. We're getting shelled (9-0) in the fifth and the bullpen has gone from great shape at the beginning of the Cleveland series to desperate after yesterday's 13 inning cluster///. Anyway, Coke got beaten up again last night and is in no shape to pitch today. He may very well be released very shortly. But he took the ball to try to eat a couple innings in a lost cause today in an attempt to avoid further damage to the staff. Credit where it's due.
And he was a very reliable guy out of the bullpen in 2010. But I think I'm being very kind by saying he's been inconsistent this season.
and 2010? He's been unreliable far more than he has been reliable.
I do appreciate what he did to avert a total disaster in the 2012 ALCS.
Wow...glad I haven't listened today. Ray had 4 walks, so he must have been rattled pretty good in this one.
Are the Tigers going to look like the first place team or are they going to turn into the Houston Astros? This is the 4th game in a row that our pitching has gotten shelled.
after their plane arrived late to Cleveland and no day off between Cleveland and Texas. . .9 game road trips can be brutal.
Not only that but the first game back home is a day game for some unknown reason. Of course Thursday day games are common as "getaway" games, but in this case at the start of a four-game series, I just don't get it. I'm sure this team could use a chance to sleep in at home.
I read an interesting article about Coke, from his days growing up, to his struggles in the the minors and into his time with Detroit. It was a pretty good read and made me like the guy as a person even if he drives me nuts most of the time on the mound. It's a few years old now (Oct 2012) but is still worth five minutes' time. It may have even been here where I came across it.

Suprised he got out of that bases loaded jam, good for him. He actually looks sharp today.
is not ready. Needs to be sent back down for seasoning. Hopefully Porcello is ready to roll full time.
I agree that is definitley holding him back. He get tied up into too many battles. when he develops that out pitch he will be something special.
who did you piss off to the point where every one of your posts are negged adn you have only been around two days?
I'm not even mad, just impressed.

in fairness, ray appears to have a decent breaking ball and a solid changeup. his fastball was topping out at 93 tho. i thought he threw a bit harder than that.
that said, early on texas hit a few pretty good pitchers pitches which ended up scoring a few runs. then the tigers made a few bad defensive plays which cost him. after that, he did seem to be a bit rattled and started walking guys. then the hit parade blew the game open.
overall, he appears more polished as a pitcher than i expected. i would have much more faith in him as a lefty reliever out of the pen than coke and spot starter; like smyly did last year.
Hopefully Porcello is ready to roll full time.
You mean Smyly, right? Porcello has been pitching full time for 3 years now.
Joel Hanrahan needs to get healthy and quick (but not too quick).
I don't get it. Why are we giving credit to Coke for pitching? That's his job, and he happens to stink at it.
but I'm guessing he could have begged off today. If he had he could have avoided risk of another shellacing (sp) and the boos from the home crowd. Nothing he does is likely to save his job. He had little or nothing to gain by going in today, but he did and he apparently pitched pretty well. He has struggled for a long time and he needs to be replaced, but he showed he has a pair today. Cheers Lord.
I guess that makes some sense. It's too bad he's performing so poorly, because I always liked his intensity.
why? So some other tired arm could throw? He threw 12 pitches to 4 batters (1.1 innings, not a couple). He's thrown 6 innings in 12 days. He ain't overworked. As a lefty "specialist" , he should be prepared to throw almost every day. I too am confused why we are singling him out for kudos.
part of being a fan is respecting a players effort.
Sure, Coke sucks on ice, but he didn't have to go out today and he did. I respect him much more than fat fuck Prince Fielder...

Here's a better one... Coke answered the bell in the late rounds when he was getting his ass kicked and won't win the fight.
last week, I took this picture from the TV feed. I thought, "Who in their right mind would buy a Phil Coke Detroit Tigers jersey?"
With all of the great players to choose from, THIS GUY bought a Phil Coke Jersey.
The guy went into work today and did his job...so did I. Credit due to both of us. He pitched 1.2 innings yesterday, so I don't get the "no shape to pitch" reference.
job description is a multi-inning reliever... If he were an important part of the team I'm sure Ausmus wouldn't have put him in. Whatever, I just thought he showed some courage.
Ok, I'll do it for a hundred bucks and a jersey with my name on it.
A total of 56 hits given up by Tigers pitching over the past 4 games and today's game isn't even done yet. That averages to 14 opponent hits/game. More than Coke has been beaten up lately. But I do agree with everyone else. Coke is not trustworthy and I don't expect him to finish the season with the Tigers.
good job Phil on not giving up 6 more runs.
Danny Worth our new secret Weapon! Who would of thought. Its hard to hit that 60 mph curve.
They predicted it on the radio earlier that he may get in today.
Put him on the staff.
really, wow not much movement at all on it. Then again its not like he's out their working on it everyday, lol.
Ortega loads the bases no outs and they yank him for Coke. Well, that's going to end real well. I just turned the TV off and started cleaning. Seriously, he is so bad I chose to clean my toilet over watching him pitch.
all of yesterdays game. As soon as they put Coke in I left and went for a bike ride. Not shocked they lost.
can neg threads now that he's over 100 points.
