Cowherd says Rodriguez is gone after this year.

Submitted by MGolem on

I know Cowherd is not well liked round these parts but he did profess to be a big Rich Rod fan. He also said that his agent and lawyer are M guys (maybe he thinks that makes him an insider) FWIW. Ultimately he believes RR's record will doom him and cites his record against non Indiana and Minnesota Big Ten teams as the most telling stat (1-16). While I can understand all that, he seems to think that if we hire Harbaugh (apparently his insiders are telling him this will happen) we will be rebuilding for 3-4 years because of the inconquerable task of transitioning from a spread to a pro-style. He said that RR recruited all of these tiny players that can't play in the "thick" pro-style offense that Harbaugh favors. I know there are a lot of mgobloggers that believe this too but I thought I would offer up a possible offensive depth chart to allevaite some concerns.

QB - Gardner (maybe the black Andrew Luck? - moves well, is big and strong and can make all the throws)

RB - Shaw/Hopkins/Cox - good sized backs with some burst

FB - McColgan/Random walk on

WR - Stonum (good size), Roundtree (would be great in any offense)

TE - Koger (typical TE build with good hands)

OL - Lewan (future all-american in any offense), Campbell/Q/Barnum (tons of beef except Barnum), Molk (man among boys), Omameh (still developing) and Schofield/Huyge (both adequately sized OL)

While no one wants RR to be fired and see M go through a tough rebuild, I would offer the above as a rationale for why we will not be a better looking and more popular Notre Dame.

that said UConn was headed the Big Ten?

He doesn't have any inside sources he is just trying to find topics for his radio show.

To use his term, he has zero credibility on anything Michigan.

Herd has said this from day 1 before he started his love fest with Rich Rod...he felt like he would be fired but he also said that he thinks it would be a mistake, stating they are 1 year away and Iowa, OSU, Wiscy, and MSU are all senior laden so next year Michigan would blow up....fwiw

I can't see them bringing anyone else in unless a disaster takes place ( other then what has already happened) I personally see them giving RR until Robinson is a SR to get this program back to the tops in the BCS. If by then it's not accomplished he's out. Everytime i read these blogs everyone wants a new coach, this guy or that guy. Our offense for the most part is insane and Robinson is a guarenteed HEISMAN winner if we can get any productivity in the next 2 yrs on the D. We need to focus on cleaning house on the Def side. Everyone! no1 is spared including special teams. Bring in a D mind, could care less how much money we pay him (god knows we have it)  and start splitting the recruits up amongst the two sides. I say next yr, w/o the injury plague, we see a significant change and in 2 yrs we're riding high again as BIG BLUE IS SUPPOSSED TOO!!

How does Cowhard think we are going to give Harbaugh  3 to 4 years to implement a new system when RR has barely gotten 2 1/2?  He needs to get perspective.

Rich Rod will return. He's a decent defense away from being good. Yes, he has lost a lot of games that he should have won but this offense is special. Think what it will be like next year. Robinson has to go. No more mistakes can be made when it comes to hiring the next DC, and uhh...probably better beat Purdue.

A lot of RR defenders seem to believe this...but why?  Last year, everyone said that we couldn't expect the D to grasp the new DC in just one season.  So, in year two of GERG how much better is the D?  It's worse.

But you (and many...not just you) seem to feel that our defense will get better next year under a new DC.  Will that new DC not need two years just like everyone demanded before judging GERG?  Will that new DC run the 3-3-5 that some feel has been forced on GERG?  I don't mean to sound rude, but it feels like the excuses never seem to end for RR, nor does the hope that he'll magically turn it around next year.

Athletes like DR come along very rarely.  Coaches always preach putting the ball in the hands of the playmakers.  What better way to put the ball into his hands than by keeping him at quarterback.  A wide receiver can be kept out of the game by a good defense.  It is proving very difficult to keep DR out of a game.

FWIW I've heard from a buddy who is a fan of an avid fan of an ACC program that has been saying the following:

On our team's weekly radio show, there was a hot discussion today about how Rich Rod is likely done after this season, and a loss to Illinois means "sooner rather than later"

He is usually pretty accurate with this stuff (if anyone remembers, this is the same buddy I had telling me that "there's no chance Demar Dorsey will qualify" when it was still popular opinion that he would (think February).

I will caveat it with this - if we lose to Illinois and RR is fired... doesn't make sense to me, because presumably if a miracle occured and we won our last three games - he'd clearly be saved.

IF he does lose to Illinois, I think it will be a matter of how BAD Michigan lost.  If the team loses by 10 or less, I think he'll still be around after this week.  If Michigan gets totally blown out, and Rod is shown to be making bonehead call after bonehead call on offense, then your friend may have a case.

Ann Arbor is cool and all but who in their right mind would leave Palo Alto CA for Michigan? And leave a successful program for M with it's bunch of entitled clueless-about-how-teams-win fans?

On the line of pessimism among the MSM, Rittenberg was on Scott Van Pelt Show today and was asked if Michigan would beat Illinois:

"Absolutely not. No way."

Then went on to say that these are two teams headed in totally different directions.  I wouldn't put him in the group of professional Rich bashers either.

Saturday would be a serious win both on the field and as it pertains to perception.

I have my doubts Harbaugh will do what Rod did in year one and try and fit a square peg in a round hole.  He'll work with what players he's given.  At least, I would think/hope he's smart enough to see what happened in 2008.

Harbaugh would get 10 of 11 starters back on O. RichRod lost his 2 starting WRs, Michigan's all time leader in passing yards and rushing yards, and the #1 pick in the draft that just happened to anchor the offensive line. It would make sense that it is much easier to transition with 1 new starter as opposed to half the offense. The two situations will be nothing alike. Nothing.
