The mgoblue website is frustrating.  No matter the device (iPad, iPhone, PC) the videos never play without glitches.  I end up watching the opening beef jerkey commercials five times in order to get through the 2 minute video.

Despite the debate on the board (Bolden vs. Morgan), I trust the coaches to put the best players on the field.  Both of these guys are very capable IMO, and we have DEPTH for a change!  Woooo HOOOO!

Lots of chatter on the board yesterday about Kalis and if he's injured or not.  I saw several poeple claim he must be injured cause he didnt appear in any of the practice video up to then.

Well if he was he's now healed.  Pretty sure that's Kyle blocking (if that's what you can call it) at the 26 second mark on the handoff to Hayes.

Obviously I do not.  My assumption was the footage selected was from the most recent practice but that may not be correct.  My point was that if we were basing our assertation that he is injured on his lack of involvement in the videos - well...there he is.

FWIW you can put me in the camp that will be VERY sad if our 5 star O-lineman cannot crack the starting lineup.

forgiven to believe those with higher education understand that the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.  Obviously that is not the case, to wit "Kalis must be injured because he's not in the one on one drill."  Neither was Jake Ryan, do they believe Ryan is injured too?  But anyway, perhaps Kalis has a class that has interfered with being "named" in the first daily OL iteration.

There is no indication from anybody that Kalis is injured. Hoke has been pretty upfront with injuries and we will know for shizzle based on Saturday's scrimage.

This quote is from Seth from the Insider Practice front page thread. Why start rumors?

"Kalis is in every configuration except the one tweeted out, and he still started much of last year."

Im not going to act like I know whether Kalis is hurt or not, but maybe he just isnt as good as  the other OL at this point. I read an article a week or so ago, and it had some quotes from Kalis saying he has to stop making mental mistakes and be more consistent. I honestly think if he were injured, someone on this blog would have heard about it. Im guessing it's due to his mental mistakes, lack of consistency and confidence.

 

Anyways, Joe Bolden is ready to tear someone's face off. Man, only a few more weeks...

This was in the Free Press yesterday.  Personally, I'd be surprised if Kalis, Glasgow, and Magnuson don't all start. 

 

“You have to earn a position and, right now, coach (Darrell) Funk’s playing a lot of guys everywhere,” Kalis said. “Obviously, me, Graham and Erik have played a lot of football, and we’re getting our respective reps, and that’s natural. Everyone’s competing.”

Kalis said he’s not bothered by seeing other players taking first-team reps at his spot, right guard.

“Everyone needs to learn to play all the positions,” he said. “We have three guys with experience, so if one guy goes down, it’ll be easy to put guys in another position. That’s mainly what he’s trying to accomplish.”

Even with Ryan out for a portion of the year, Joe Bolden was still part of a very productive linebacker unit for Michigan. Indeed, as a unit, they were responsible for or involved in nearly one-quarter of all the tackles made by the defense (including assisted). With a healthy Jake Ryan and the switch to the Over among other things, I think Bolden and others in the LB corps are set up well for this year.

Legitimate question:

If the OL sucks again this year - is Funk fired, or is it one of those 'well, we switched up the blocking schemes again - so let's see how all these young kids do in year 2 of Nuss' situations?

Difficult question.  First, I don't think Hoke wants to fire anybody on his staff.  I mean look at the staff reshuffling this offseason instead of replacing coaches you are unhappy with.  So the OL would have to be pretty bad for him to fire Funk.  And that leads me to say that if the OL is really bad, well I think you're looking at the HC being replaced because losses will rack up if the OL is terrible...But, even if the OL is really bad, I don't think Nuss's play calling is going to exacerbate the problems to the extent that Borges' did.  Plus, if the defense takes a jump to elite type territory, the team could rack up a lot of wins even with the offense not being all that good.  And if the team wins, no one gets fired even if the OL sucks.  And if the offense is really good, then Nuss takes a HC job somewhere.  So it seems it would have to be some mediocre type year with enough wins/good wins for Hoke to keep his job, but the OL to be singularly spectacularly bad, which would be difficult to happen.

So to answer your question, I don't know.

if the offensive line doesnt show improvement throughout the season, I would say its time to let him go (unless injuries or something like that happens). The line is still young but every indication is we wont be scrambling to change up the play calling every week so that should allow the line and running backs to get used to how guys are playing around them and improve as they get comfortable.

Can someone with more football smarts than me explain what the blocking scheme is on the first play shown?  I guess I don't understand why when Bosch pulls he doesn't engage with Frank Clark but instead leaves him for a much smaller fullback to handle. Subsequently, Bosch has to get  to Bolden who is more agile as was able to elude the block and make the tackle. Why not have the pulling guard take the DE and the fullback take the linebacker?

Also, for all the hype Mason Cole has gottern from the coaches, it seems like he stumbled back 6-7 feet after one shove from Hurst...

the fullback (houma i think) is supposed to get the DE in the play it looks like. Cole also has to come from the tackle spot to try and block the DT, which isnt a great angle for him and it looks like he really just have to wall him off from getting outside which he kinda does so IDK.
