Could we be nearing our second 2014 commit?

Submitted by wresler120 on

Michigan will likely take only one quarterback in the class of 2014, and it appears they may be close to snagging that commitment. Wilton Speight (6,6, 220), a junior out of Virginia has been receiving interest from Michigan, along with schools like Alabama, USC and Georgia. Per Speight he was told by Michigan that if they offer they would like a commitment from him on the spot, so they can essentially wrap up their qb recruitment for the 2014 class.

Speight has been hearing from Michigan a lot recently, and he was told by Coach Montgomery that they would like to see him throw soon. Well, it turns out that soon will be Friday when Coach Borges makes a visit to see him throw. It's quite possible that Borges could offer on the spot, and a good possibility that Speight may commit on the spot.

This one could be interesting.

Has anybody ever blown you away? Every single recruit you basically end up saying that they suck or you're not impressed with them.  I know coaching JV football for a couple years makes you a supreme evaluator of talent but it's odd to me that you would know so much more than every recruiting service.

Well, so far Wilton Speight has zero scholarship offers, and Cornwell has two.  I think it's safe to say that not many "supreme evaluators of talent" are blown away, either.  Also, Speight is a 3-star to 247 and unrated by anyone else.  I don't see how I'm claiming to know more than them, but if that's the way you see it, oh well.

They want a commitment "on the spot"? I trust the coaches, but unless they've been in frequent contact with him and he's expressed a lot of interest in Michigan, can they really ask a kid to do that? At face value, it sounds like a pretty unfair request.

We grabbed 10 last February so at least a few should say yes in the coming weeks.

Wilton has OK skills but it obviously boils down to Borges about Wilton's brains & leadership. Skills alone, he seems below Cornwall and even some sophs like Dillman.

Only one recruit for 2014 so far?  It's almost February 2013!  At this pace, Coach Hoke and  team won't have the 2014 class 3/4 full by the end of spring practice.

What a bunch of loafers these guys are!!!

Was watching some of the recent Kansas-West Virginia game on TV and noticed that the letters and numbers on these new jerseys were very difficult to see clearly,  When the camera was shooting from a distance, the images on the screen made it look like a practice scrimmage between the blue team and the white team.  Link to Google images from that game*: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sugexp=les%3B&gs_rn=1&gs_ri=hp&cp=25&gs_id=2w&xhr=t&q=kansas+basketball+jerseys&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bvm=bv.41642243,d.dmg&biw=1280&bih=585&wrapid=tljp1359645967119050&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=FI0KUb2EKObT0wGD8YGoAQ#um=1&hl=en&tbo=d&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=kansas+west+virginia+basketball&oq=kansas+west+virginia+basketball&gs_l=img.3..0i24.13140.19957.2.20553.17.17.0.0.0.0.96.1095.17.17.0...0.0...1c.1.QtnOcjn4I1I&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bvm=bv.41642243,d.dmQ&fp=1a06636f64d486c4&biw=1280&bih=585&imgrc=DatotmX8FWYUhM%3A%3B-Dq9bkRecVhxUM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fmedia.tri-cityherald.com%252Fsmedia%252F2013%252F01%252F28%252F23%252F30%252F370-lexOy.AuSt.55.jpeg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.tri-cityherald.com%252F2013%252F01%252F28%252F2254024%252Fwest-virginia-falls-to-no-2-kansas.html%3B512%3B361

It reminded me of the jerseys Michigan wore in the Outback Bowl against South Carolina.

Is the purpose of these jerseys to prevent TV viewers from identifying players whom they won't know or recognize simply from their appearance?

It's hard to get more than one quality QB in a year. After all, there can only be one on the field. So if Michigan recruits a good QB for 2014, its hard to convince another guy that's equally as good to come on board. Granted, some guys love the competition, but more often than not, the probability of getting playing time will win out.

hopefully the coaches know what they're doing.  They may have to change that approach IF Speight is offered Friday and he doesn't accept right away.  The clock is ticking in regard to getting an elite QB for 2014, and it appears Michigan doesn't want to be left standing when the music stops.

Not sure if you've ever put one together, but I'd love to see football All-Name team...we've had some great names through the years and I'd love to see what your list would look like.

If Speight and Morris were outside a house and wanted to throw a football into the living room, Morris just winds up and throws it through the wall, but Speight looks like he might just toss it perfectly so it drops right down the chimney.

Is there really anything wrong with trying to get commitments from more than one quarterback for the 2014 Class?

There’s always the risk of senior-season problems for high school QBs, and the subsequent risk of a de-commitment (as with Kevin Newsome and Shavodrick Beaver) or academic casualty (Tate Forcier.)

Each of the three QBs who received offers for Michigan's 2013 Class missed a significant part of his senior season.

Shane Morris was diagnosed with mononucleosis after he had completed 40 of 83 passes for 456 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions in Warren De La Salle Collegiate’s first four games. He returned for the team’s final two games and finished the season with passing stats of 61 for 113 for 736 yards, six TDs and six INTs. His ranking has dropped precipitously, even though he still is projected to be a star at Michigan.

Kevin Olsen of Wayne Hills HS in Wayne, NJ (a perennial football power for the past  two decades in northern New Jersey) fractured a bone in his foot in his team’s opening game. He returned to play in the team’s last three games, two of which were losses, and his passing stats in those games were 28 for 60 for 328 yards, three TDs and 4 INTs. He’ll be playing for Miami (YTM - The "U") where his older brother Greg (now with the Carolina Panthers) was a star tight end.

Tennessee commit Riley Ferguson of David Butler HS in Matthews, NC broke a bone in his throwing right hand and missed six games, but helped lead his team to a 15-0 record and a North Carolina 4AA state championship (the second for Ferguson who'd won it in 2010 as a sophomore) when he went 20 of 29 for 301 yards and five TDs in the championship game. He finished the year with 2,173 yards passing and 25 touchdowns in nine games.

Highly doubt they offer. They've been going from qb to qb watching them throw and have yet to offer. They will probably meet in a week or so after watching the guys throw and decide who to offer. From what I've heard Henderson, Cornwell, Smith and O'Connor are their top guys. I might be forgetting someone but I haven't heard anything about Speight being in that group.
