Could we be nearing our second 2014 commit?

Submitted by wresler120 on

Michigan will likely take only one quarterback in the class of 2014, and it appears they may be close to snagging that commitment. Wilton Speight (6,6, 220), a junior out of Virginia has been receiving interest from Michigan, along with schools like Alabama, USC and Georgia. Per Speight he was told by Michigan that if they offer they would like a commitment from him on the spot, so they can essentially wrap up their qb recruitment for the 2014 class.

Speight has been hearing from Michigan a lot recently, and he was told by Coach Montgomery that they would like to see him throw soon. Well, it turns out that soon will be Friday when Coach Borges makes a visit to see him throw. It's quite possible that Borges could offer on the spot, and a good possibility that Speight may commit on the spot.

This one could be interesting.

I wonder why the coaches would take this approach? I understand that he's their guy but if he commits this early and sometime decides to decommit later down the road. We will be late to the party with every qb at that time.

Sam mentioned 3 hot QB prospects for 2014 (this gent was not on the list btw) and noted that all 3 were fairly likely to commit "on the spot" when offered, therefore they had to be sure who there #1 was before offering.

If this guy is their new/true top QB target, I can see them pushing for a commit knowing they have 2 or 3 they could lose on if they have to hold on for an extended decision process.

IMO, if you throw several offers out there not knowing if kids will commit or not, and then you have more kids trying to commit than you have spots available for the position, you have to choose which kids you want to take and which kids to send packing.

Then you are Lane Kiffin.

And a Philip Rivers like throwing style.  Between him and Cornwell, it sure is nice to see the coaches going after great size at QB, not to mention every other position.....

Travis Smith from Ithaca also seems to be a possibility. Based upon his quotes, it sounds like they've wittled it down even further than we've realized.

"I know they have narrowed it down to three QB's including myself. Coach Borges was at my school last week and is coming back to watch me throw. So, I'm thinking that will be the deciding factor." source

Are their final 3 targets Cornwell, Speight, and Smith?

After reading your comment I was expecting to see a big looping Tebow-like motion. Realize now that wasn't what you were talking about. His throws don't have the same zip that Shane's have, but I wonder if that indicates a lack of arm strength or a realization that he doesn't have to throw the ball hard all the time.

If you have two quarterbacks you have none... and im a firm believer in this from a leadership and game management stand point. Have ONE quarterback who fits The Michigan Standard and it doesnt matter if the opposing team prepares all weak for him. This is Michigan, we will run our O at will and dictate the game, period. Two QB's as potential starters...ppsshh, you youngsters just dont know.

If you read the post I responded to it would help clarify. The previous post stated that teams would have to "prepare" for both styles of QB. No college football team has ever started "preparing" for two incoming or current freshmen. Teams prepare fir the projected starter, which would further support the accuracy of my response. So you either didn't read the post I resonded to or you just dont know shit about football, thanks for trying to correct me though...

Ummm so the saying refers to gameplay you say, perhaps that is why I included " from the perspective of leadership and game management". Game management meaning gameplay, so thank you for clarifying, I now know you are both stupid AND lacking basic football knowledge...

You must be a riot to be around if you get that worked up over a mild rebuttal on the internet. No one even paid notice to it until you went batshit. Now you look like a complete douche nozzle.

Since you're such a fan of "old sayings", here's one: better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than open it and remove all doubt.

Assuming Gardner gets his RS and starts in 2013 and 2014, we would then have Morris, 2014 QB recruit, and 2015 QB recruit to compete for the starting QB job in 2015 (not to mention potentially Bellomy...not going to write the kid off yet).

If you take 2 in 2014, it may be harder to pull an elite QB in 2014 and may scare off QBs in 2015. The only reason I would see the need for 2 QBs in 2014 is if Gardner does not get his RS waiver approved and we are down to only Morris and our 2014 QB recruits to compete for job in 2014.

I wish I could downvote myself for my apostrophe error.  But I am in the "find an elite QB first, find a project later" camp.  I think it would be wise to take a late flier on a guy who whose profile wouldn't necessarily be threatening to an elite QB looking over the depth chart... but who has enough talent to provide some depth and meaningful competition.  Surely Purdue will have somebody locked up by then that we can steal.

We didn't take one in 2012, and we still have a hole in our roster at QB. Three scholarship quarterbacks is a little thin, especially with Bellomy being an unknown at this point. Looking ahead to 2014, we've got Morris and Bellomy and whoever we get for 2014. Even if Morris works out, with 2 QBs in the 2014 class, there's a better chance that at least one of them will be good enough to be a backup. And honestly, I'm a little nervous that we seem to be putting all of our eggs in the Shane Morris basket. If he doesn't work out ( and not all 5 star QBs do), we're left without much else. Look at what happened with Texas. They didn't take a QB in 2008 in anticipation of getting 5 star Garret Gilbert in 2009. When he didn't pan out, they were caught short, and they've been struggling at QB ever since. If Gardner gets another year, that would help a lot, but there's no guarantee of that at this point.

After what Ward and Conley pulled Im not too sure about these early commitments anymore. I guess its a part of the recruiting game. I must say tho that after the Ward decommit I do welcome a new prospect. WHAT AM I TALKING ABOUT, BRING IT!
