Corwin has been acting irrationally for awhile, and they seem to believe he was/is suffering from symptoms similiar to Dave Duerson. And hasn't disclosed it for his and his former teams reputation. It's convenient timing, but it would explain a lot of his recent career arc. Best wishes and hope he gets the mental and physical help he needs, and that this was the rock bottom, and maybe it was caught before it gets to Duerson's level of tragedy.
Corwin Brown's Family Releases a Statement
he gets the right help to battle his demons.
Misopogal has studied some of this stuff in her psych work. The disease is called CTE and people who are particularly vulnerable are those who have received multiple concussions. The reason we are so careful these days about people who have concussions is that a second concussion while suffering from a first -- even a mild one -- can bring on CTE.
Lou Creekmur and Bob Probert are probably the two most recognizable sufferers to Detroiters.
It's degenerative, but signs of it show up early and could create major depression. Owen Thomas - the Penn player who committed suicide -- was found to have early signs of it..
I don't think we know enough to say anything about this for sure -- she throws in a gazillion maybes and stops talking to me about it when I ask if she thinks it applies to specific cases (I asked her about Sam McGuffie and she refused to say). However a person suffering from CTE really can't help their actions. If this is indeed what's happening to Corwin, he deserves our sympathy and prayers.
Second Impact Syndrome, which I think is the bigger concern, can result in death. It is when another a player gets a concussion while still symptomatic from an earlier one.

that was linked in Mgo.licio.us below under the title "Corwin Brown will be arrested immediately upon release from hospital" -- the weirdness of which I thought prompted Anonymous C's comment "...this was not the best 1-2 punch in the history of Michigan headlines." But that info was removed. Either I'm dreaming or AC simply meant the 1-2 punch was that of hospital + arrest. The statement is now buried in another article:
It's sad to think one should hope for a devastating disease rather than a "simple" personality meltdown, but it makes sense. Had worked with neurologists years ago, one of whom moonlighted as a doctor at boxing matches and wrote an article about his findings. But Brown's family is reaching out to the doctor who was involved with the Duerson case, so at least they can get a diagnosis, if not any effective treatment.
I hope Corwin gets the help he needs.
I'm amused, however, that MGoBoard ignores the CTE of Kyle Turley in order to stone him for trashing Brady Hoke, but embraces it for a Michigan Grad who recently conducted an armed hostage situation.
Is that I don't think there is any possible "help" out there. In that sense (i.e. no known effective treatment) I believe its like ALS.
Really, really awful stuff.
Very sad story
