Cool Story, Bro! Just saw Juwan Howard

Submitted by Brown Bear on
Was just heading to Lone Wolf(bar) on Randolph street here in Chicago and who do I see waiting out front of the famously long wait Au Cheval? Our very own Mr. Juwan Howard. He was wearing Michigan basketball shorts and some M themed Jumpman shoes I believe. Maybe he just worked out and needed that famous Au Cheval burger for post workout fuel. Anyhow. No photo. Just shouted Go Blue! and he happily returned it back. Made my day, one of my childhood idols. Also might be slightly drunk. Cool story bro. I know. This thread is dedicated to Magnus and Mr. Yost. May one of you or both be unhappy with it.

It is. Just don't go there late night when you're drunk. They'll not let you order a drink before you "order food to sober up". For real. Had them deny my group shots but gave us beer even though we were "over served" to them but said if we all ordered food we could have our shots with our drinks. That's not how alcohol works, Au Cheval!

I'm pretty sure it would be just about the last place I'd think of going late-night whilst drunk.

Also, I'm pretty glad I got in for that burger before it got too well-known; went like three times, all 2-3 years ago, never waited for more than about ten minutes, if at all. Now all I hear are horror stories about how long the line is.

Best burger I've ever had. The secret to not waiting is to go early during the week, like around 10:55 AM. The line starts a little after 11.

I live near Small Cheval and have been a bunch of times, have yet to go for the real deal. Has anyone had both? Is there a big difference?

The only difference in the au cheval burger is the super thick cut bacon (made at our sister restaurant green St smoked meats) glazed with maple syrup and ground pepper and an egg. If you ever find yourself at au cheval, the crispy potato hash w/ duck heart gravy, and the foie gras w/ scrambled eggs and toast are both killer. Along with pretty much everything on the menu. Edit: the bacon at small cheval is the same bacon, just not thick cut and with maple syrup and ground pepper.

Awesome guy. A true legend for graduating on time despite going pro after three years.

A lot of people love the 4-out, 1-in direction basketball is going, but the rare team that had two legit players doing work in the post (as Michigan did with Webber and Juwan) is a beautiful thing. I watched that Michigan-Kentucky game from '93 on YouTube this year. You just don't see college teams with that type of ability anymore.

I'm moving out of Chicago next week and need to try Au Cheval to complete the burger tour.  Have recently been to Kuma's, DMK, Dry Hop, and a few others.

I was on a redeye to NYC in first class and I actually got to sit next to Juwan Howard. We talked about what it is like for athletes, especially black athletes, living in Ann Arbor and going to Michigan. He had some really interesting takes on all that, recognizing his star level there and the relative status that he was afforded by all that, which put him on a level that perhaps few students really have. It wasn't a long conversation, maybe about an hour to 90 minutes, then we both passed out and slept the rest of the way.
