Conley decommits

Submitted by lilwolve4 on

Gareon Conley has decomitted as being reported by various people on the twittersphere. Mattison was at his school today. Commence death and dispair.

Wow RT @Miles11W BREAKING: Gareon Conley confirms to me he has de-committed from #Michigan. Will take an official to#OhioState.

Also hearing that he will take an OV to OSU, Cincinatti, and here. All is not completely lost.

It's one thing for a kid to change his mind when he has a bunch of offers from day 1, but this feels like....thanks for holding a spot for me and helping my recruiting ranking blow up given the reputation of your program.  Now let me see if I can further leverage this, even though you guys discovered me and were behind me from day 1.  Feels a bit like UM got used here.

So it goes with recruiting I suppose.

Could it be that the kid is actually torn and not sure on this huge decision in his life. While he's out there practicing, working out, improving his game and busting his tail you think he thinks in his mind that "Michigan is why I'm getting these offers and interest. Not my hard work! I should string them along for my gain." The coaching staff discovered they had a hidden gem and offered. Out of excitement the kid jumped at it. I'm sure though he has a bunch of people in his ears(other schools, family, friends) saying you should go here or check out there. Lets not blindly indict the kid for "using" Michigan when not knowing all the facts while we do know that he has been up front with the staff. Obligatory....BAHHH

It ain't over until it's over.  Let him explore other options.  If we still have a spot for him down the road, welcome him back with open arms.

I am officially not clicking on recruiting posts anymore. The only day I care about from this day forward as it relates to recruiting is signing day.

This would be heartbreaking but.... Mattison has shown to be more than capable of making the defense as a whole much greater than the sum of individual parts from a talent perspective.  Even if Conley isn't replaced by someone as talented, I have no doubt whoever ends up getting the corner spots in the future will be put in the best possible position to succeed.

First of all I really hate following recuiting for a number of reasons.  First, it's so easy to get caught up in the fantasy of landing highly rated recruits...I blame the media for this and telling me what to believe, because let's face it, I have never seen any of these kids actually play.  Second, these kids are young and these are huge decisions for them so, for lack of a better explanation, they come & go.  And, third, it's so easy to get emotionally attached to getting certain guys and allowing unrealistically high expectations set in.

But, with all that said, I really don't get Conley's decision.  We were the first major offer and he took it.  We looked great compared to his other options.  Now there are other quality suiters.  I get that.  But, now he's interested in OSU.  OSU has verbals from two extremely highly rated guys, higher than his rating by most, that play the same position.  So, why would he think that is a better option for him?  Who knows..maybe somehow we can flip Burrows lol.

He just saw one program beat another program for the 9th time in 11 years, the victor being 12-0 with one of the hottest names in coaching and the loser being 8-4 with a coach who's not. Some kids are going to be affected by this sort of thing, regardless of whether they'll admit it in public or not. It's an entirely normal thing for people to want to join the winners.

Is why would a defensive player pick to play for Luke fickle over Mattison. That's the argument I have for some defensive players leaving. But media on recruiting is getting really ridiculous and here I am on mgoblog writing about it.
