Conley Announcing Tomorrow

Gareon Conley just posted on his twitter page that he's verbally committing tomorrow. Seeing as he's here tomorrow, I'm gonna go ahead and assume that's good news.

Go Blue!

Keep the commit train rolling.  Hopefully just the first of a few this weekend!

The Way 2013 Is Shaping Up...

...it's rather more of a recruiting bullet train really. It's looks pretty darn good to have that many strong verbal commits in such a short span. The #20 CB in the nation per Rivals is certainly welcome.

But....but....I thought it was safe to un buckle Monday through Friday?!  The speeding bullet train seems to hit top speed every weekend.  A man's got to unbuckle every now and again, right?  Plus if you unbuckle, it is really exciting to re-buckle.

Ehh....maybe you're right, though.  Maybe permanent buckling is in order...

Seems like a solid pickup, but sometimes I wish the staff would slow down a bit and save some additional spots for all of the elite blue chips we are in on.

With the needs locked down, that's what they're doing now. Plus, don't get deceived by Conley's offer list. Very smooth for a 6'2 CB.

Reminds me of ....

He reminds me of Steve Breaston, tall and skinny, it doesn't look like he's going that fast with those long strides but he's running away from everybody. I know he plays a diferent position but the kick return was very reminiscent of Breaston.

I'm not a big fan of Magnus

I feel like his opinions are mostly somewhat to very different from the major, respected, recruiting services.  And I haven't seen anything that would vindicate those opinions.

I don't want to turn this

I don't want to turn this into a Magnus-bashing thread, although I know that's not your intention.

IMO, Magnus just gives his plain and honest opinion. It varies sometimes from other sites, because most other sites are (a) homers, or (b) unwilling to criticize the kid too harshly because they rely on his interview to get subscribers. I respect Magnus' work more than any other evaluations I read out there.

I like that Magnus isn't a fan boy but he takes it in another direction completely. His act is to be bullish on all recruits in an effort to differentiate himself from other Michigan sites. Now he is no Valenti, but then again who is. He is more like those Muppets that sit up in the balcony and didn't like anything.

Without Magnus, we'd think

Without Magnus, we'd think every one of our recruits was a stud every year. It's a good reality check and you're allowed to disagree if you like someone's film. That said, I think his speciality is linemen but at least he's specific about it; he backs up his criticisms very well. I know I don't really look out for 'knee bend' or first step very much.

A bird in the hand, my friend.

Just how the coaches are calling off the uncommitted LB recruits, I'm sure they'd do the same thing at other positions if they felt there were elite recruits we had a good shot at or were worth waiting for.  Or maybe the coaches think Conley is that good.  Scout has him as the #20 CB in the country, which is pretty solid.

Another thing to consider is

Another thing to consider is that the coaches look for 2 different types of corners. One of the reasons they liked Standifer was his size and ability to play the boundary-type corner spot that J.T. Floyd does.

Add Conley in with Jourdan Lewis whose more of a pure cover corner and you've got a very strong pair of CB's in this class

Not directly related to the announcement but around the 15 second mark of his highlights is pretty hilarious. A defensive tackle sized punter throws an interception to Conley...definitely one of the more unique plays I've ever seen.

Kind of agree

Don't necessarily think they need to slow down but we're right in there for some top talent at CB and it would be nice to let a few of those recruitments play out a bit first.

Ummmm why? We are already in

Ummmm why? We are already in on plenty of blue chip recruits, would you rather recruits string the coaches along the whole time only to pick other schools? Jordan Diamond, and Joshua Garnett are prime examples.

It would seem easier to get kids to stay committed to your school, rather than trying to get them to commit in the first place.

Another thing, rating a

Another thing, rating a recruit is highly subjective, it is possible the coaches have Conley higher rated than the recruiting services. I value a Hoke, Mattison opinion over Alan Trieu, or Tom Lemming or whatever recruiting guru you want to name. I appreciate what Trieu and Lemming do but I can't give their opinion more weight than our coaches.

P.S. I have no idea what opinion Trieu and Lemming have of Conley, I was just making a general point.

I was responding to the post

I was responding to the post way above that said we should slow down and wait for high caliber players. I wasn't saying why do we want him, the coaches know more about these kids than any of us. Any kid that commits is a solid prospect in my book.

Absolutely.  Remember,

Absolutely.  Remember, Michigan has a full staff of experienced, well-funded football minds scouting their players.  They have great access to recruits films, their coaches, and the recruits themselves.  And they can focus their attention on a much smaller group of recruits than Lemming or Trieu.  Not only that, but the gurus rate a guy on how well he'll do in college in general, and our coaches "rate" a kid based on how well he'll do at Michigan, in our system.

Point is, if Hoke and Co. really like a guy, but Lemming doesn't - side with Hoke.  He has a lot more riding on that decision than Lemming does anyway.

Past History

If I remember correctly, Pipkens was not on anyone's radar last year.  Standifer was another example that gained attention after Michigan's offer and if not for the missing language classes was picking up alot of attention as well.

Given that many HS players continue to grow and develop I would give a lot of string to the fact that the coaches are picking up on very good talent very early in the process.

Early Recruiting

In a way a see your point, buuuuuut one of the reasons we are having so much success with this class is because we got the job done early last year and were able to start concentrating on 2013 before anyone else in the Midwest. I specifically remember when we were all over Taco Charleton and it was like last summer. He said something along the lines of he didnt grow up a Mich fan and was more of an OSU guy. When asked about his recruitment in the fall he said that Mich was by far and away showing him the most love and that paid off for us in a big way. The name Malick McDowell is another bit of positivity when it comes to our efforts in the 2013 class being put together so early as he will be a bigtime prospect, and we are his first Bigtime offer (no the Cuse doesnt count). I personally think thats why we will not only finish strong in 2013, but we will also start very strong in 2014.

The one time I actually catch breaking Michigan news, I post a topic, and then see the same topic posted one minute beforehand. Now my thread is deleted.

Damn you MGoBlog! Damn you all to hell.

Seriously, though, Conley's a damn good pick-up and if anything it keeps the commit train rolling. Holding out hope Ty Issac sees the light emanating from Shane Morris.

I don't want to borrow worry...

But I'm starting to think that Coach Hoke really doesn't care if we recruiting-watchers have nothing to do all summer...I mean, what, are we supposed to go out and be in the sun?  Play golf?  Sail down the Mississippi in a raft?  This is a serious issue...

Within a week or 2 of his

Within a week or 2 of his commitment to Michigan they will have something on him. Prob a generic 3-star and then if he does some camps and does well then he'll have the opportunity to move up. It would be nice to see him have a great seaon and garner a 4th star but its not the end of the world.

How might this affect Vernon Hargreaves III and Kendall Fuller? I'm guessing at least one of them would have a spot come NSD if they want to go blue.

Wed likely keep pursuing them

Wed likely keep pursuing them and possibly save a spot for them based on their interest level.  There will always be certain guys the staff will save spots for, but you don't want to do that with too many guys because you might get burned.

I'm sure the coaches will feel it out with those guys over the next few months.  However, if other guys who are close to that level want in, it could change things as well.

I can see us getting a WR,

I can see us getting a WR, RB, LB and DT to move us up to 19 commits.  After that, the last 3-4 spots will be for best available.  Guys like: Levenberry, T.Isaac/D.Smith, Fuller, Cravens, Vanderdoes/Poggi, Treadwell/Foster, Orndoff.  If we have more attrition than expected, that might open the door for another OL like McGovern or Pocic.

I agree with this

Assuming we have 9/10 spots left.

I can see Michigan taking a RB, CB, DT, WR, and a LB ... and calling that a finished class, with 3-5 spots left for simply the top players.  If we can get those spots, and with Isaac, Conley, Poggi, Treadwell, and Gedeon ... we look pretty good to do so, we can literally take 3 - 5 five stars, regardless of position.  At this point, you name a top player, there is no need to ask the question; does this effect them?  It doesn't.  We'll take him, and however many that come with him .... between three and four, of course.  This is simply a genius recruiting plan, and seemingly, it's workin to complete perfection.

Hoke-mania is running wild like it's 1987.

On a side note, A couple Buckeye faithful were pretty confident about flipping Dymonte. Don't see that happening, I must say.

Frankly, I don't see why that isn't a legitimate question.  It makes sense to become more selective the more full the class gets.  I'm not saying Conley isn't a tremendous player, but the question itself is fair.

They are being selective by position

they're filling their quota at positions with very solid players and leaving space overall in the class for top players. Just because you have five 4* linemen doesn't make it smart to start limiting other positions.

The question's fair

Yes, but, as has been stated on here several times, the question also assumes that the recruiting service scouts are a better judge of character than the coaches. Hoke has a lot more riding on the player's he recruits.

I am also amused at the calls for Michigan to slow down, when at the same time there are cries for players to commit. It works two ways—they commit to Michigan, but Michigan also commits to them.

Obviously?

As was pointed out above, at this point last year PeeWee was a 3-star while others were "obviously better football players". So I would hazard a guess that the star ratings, especially at this point, as much an indication of a player's exposure as they are their talent or athleticism. As much as I want the "experts" to be excited about the recruiting class and give Michigan some love, I have to believe the coaches are choosing the players that are best for their system and possess the skills to succeed at Michigan. If they identify those kids, stars be damned, sign them up. If it is a matter of talent, I think Hoke and Co have already demonstrated their willingness to turn away recruits that rank lower in the eyes of the coaches (see the LBs who won't be visiting this weekend).

Yeah, but anybody watching

Yeah, but anybody watching Peewees film knew he was underrated.  It was, well, obvious.  And I don't know what "system" you are talking about, but any system needs the best athletes it can find.

Not a homer

Not a homer but this kid has some serious athleticism and I will be very surprised if he is not a consensus 4 star by national signing day. The fact that he is 6'2 helps also. A couple of years in the weight room and good coaching could make this kid into a special player. I like him. GO BLUE!!

I would be shocked if this

I would be shocked if this hasn't been mentioned already. But according to Tremendous, Chris Hawkin is also making his decision this saturday.

I also posted this in the Friday Recruiting thread.
I'm not saying he isn't underrated (double negative. Pardon me.), but it blows my mind that a kid at one of the biggest football schools in Ohio can be overlooked to an extent.

Assuming he commits to Michigan, if I can make it to a few of his games next season I will. I'm pretty sure he matched up with Kevin Gladney (UM offer) of Firestone last season. I want to get out to the McKinley game as well. Also the Buchtel game.

Some stats from last season from Massillontigers.com

25 total tackles (20 unassisted, 10 assisted, 2.5 for loss)

3 receptions for 10 yards.

3 punt returns for 39 yards.

4 kickoff returns for 142 yards.

4 interceptions for 101 yards.

1 sack.

Massillon plays Firestone again this year. I'll be there to see how he does against a good WR.

What?

What isn't blue chip about this kid?  Our system is a little different from everyone else's, and look what Hoke/Mattison did with the less than perfect talent (I'm feeling charitable) we had on D last year.

Conley is tall, fast, locates well, seems to diagnose well...maybe he's not a 4.3 40 guy, but he's only 18(ish).  I knocked .20 seconds off of my 40 in college, and I'm sure he'll work harder in the weight room than I did.

Don't get too caught up in the 5* thing.  This kid has elite talent, and fits what we want to do, keeping the ball inside and in front, and making plays on the ball when it's in the air.

Getting him and Hawkins this weekend would wrap-up CB this year, I think.

Love this pick-up!

He's a 6' 2" CB who is a 3/4* recruit who in his highlight video plays the deep pass, plays the run, reads a QBs eyes for a pick, blitzes, blocks kicks and returns kick-offs plus the coaches are high on him in spite of our limited scholarships available.  I'll take him any day!

I'm sure there is still room for Cravens and/or Fuller if they want to come.

This takes one player off my wish list:

Elite RB

Elite WR

6’2” ¾* WR

DT

Everything else is a bonus.

He is CB but your list has WR crossed off.

Mark from Scouting Ohio

FWIW, the guy who puts together the Bucknuts Top 50 just loves Conley. Says he is a better cover corner than Burrows. "His athleticism and ball skills are the best in Ohio, no question."
