they are going to regret it. The guy can motivate kids and I bet he will be a great recruiter.
Sorry Sam Webb I am done listening to UM recruiting hype. MSU hasn't had a top 30 class in a long time. The number of walk ons and guys who weren't heavily recruiting out playing 4 stars who have no desire is everywhere. Reminds me how much we did miss walk on Kovacs this year.
Also need to give Hoke and his staff another year with fan patience. Good programs have systems and recruit to those systems. This takes time and leads to "player development". I'm not exactly sure what Hoke's identity for Michigan is though to be honest.
Dont forget msu took a huge advantage in recruiting durin RR era, where we recruited different style of players at that time.
Who else heard Dantonio reference the incoming recruits providing more depth going forward and thought, well shit.
Fuck sparty and I am not going to try to congrat a fan base or a team who hate us with all their guts...sorry cant stand them, especially in this occassion where now they think they own college football.
Wake the fuck up. If I were Sparty, I wouldn't give a shit about Michigan. They have won eleven or more games in three of the last four seasons. When was the last time Michigan did that? They have surpassed us. It's painful to admit, but it's true. They were a couple of bullshit pass interference calls away from playing for the national championship.
We are the new little brother. Let's stop deluding ourselves.
I'm sure he watched the Rose Bowl. If that game can't motivate him to rethink everything he does, he's a fool. That game better light a fire under every coach and player that how they prepare for games isn't even remotely good enough.
i think it's more likely that he thinks that a great team like stanford couldn't beat sparty, so there's obviously not a coaching issue here. it will just reinforce the youth and inexperience meme.
Dave Brandon is in a tough spot. Can't fire Hoke because he's bringing in the recruits, but in the same time, he's not getting the results out of them, that's on the coaches. Some of the 4 stars should be ready to go after a year of red shirting and they aren't.
A year of redshirting and they should be ready to go?
How many RS freshmen were playing in the Rose Bowl today? Stanford only has four on their whole depth chart, and two of the four are the backup punter and backup place kicker. Only one even saw the field today.
If somebody plays their way in during camp, that's great, but functioning programs do not depend on contributions from their redshirt freshmen.
We're currently number 20 in team rankings in Rivals. He's never had the best recruiting class in the Big Ten according to the Rivals rankings. He's a good recruiter, but he's not so good that he's unreplaceable. He's never beaten OSU in recruiting (even when they had a disaster year and we went to the Sugar Bowl) and he's beaten ND once.
David Brandon doesn't give a shit. Did you read his blog post?
Brady Hoke thinks we're fickle for daring to expect more than seven wins out of a program that acts like it's God's gift to football.
If anyone is screwed, it's us fans.
Honestly? If you put this team over the Russ Wilson-Wisc/Cousins-MSU teams that one year (both of those teams were really good), this is probably the best B1G team in a long while.
The way this program develops its players should alarm the absolute shit out of Hoke & DB, but I'm not even sure Hoke gives a damn. The fact that Cook is this competent from where he was earlier this year alone should be enough to send Borges the fuck out of AA.
"When I saw their offensive linemen's stance, I knew the way to make a play was to go over the top," said Elsworth, selected the game's defensive MVP.
I wonder if our coaches could even guess what he's talking about, let alone whether they're teaching it to our players.
Well, he was a SR playing behind an All American, but duly noted.
Also, a blind man could have guessed what that play was going to be. Stanford lined up in the same formation, with the same playcall, both before and after the TO. So yeah, I'd hope someone could have picked up that play.
They lined up in the same formation with the same playcall both before and AFTER the timeout? No way! I'm so glad our coaching staff would never, ever do anything that idiotic and self-defeating in a crucial end-of-the-game situation.
Congrats on the season.
Despite the impact it likely has on recruiting, I have no problem with B1G teams winning (when they're not playing UM). Michigan needs to face good opponents, and improve. Hopefully, other B1G teams improve, too.
The bandwagon MSU fans popping up everywhere in Michigan is a joke. Even worse then the bandwagon ND fans.
I would bet my house one of these threads would show up if MSU won the national championship with everyone congratulating them on the game like they don't give a damn about our rivalry with them.
If you mean people can be human beings and recognize a good performance, then yes by all means bet your house. Getting pissy at another team simply because you are their rival gets old pretty quick too. Noboyd here "likes" seeing MSU win, but just ignoring them and being all "hur hur most wins ever. Leaders and the Best!" is just as bad and any trolling MSU or OSU fans are guilty of.
I had a number of MSU fans give props to UM last year for their NCAA run. And they HATE UM.
of the reason I hate them so much. They're a rival team of a rival school with a staff and fanbase I find to be what I consider total douche nozzles, yet every time they win a game of any relative magnitude, everyone who pays any attention to college football expects me to sit and wax poetic about how fucking awesome they are. I don't care what they win, I still won't like them, so don't ask me to fellate them in a way they never have and never would for us, were the tables turned. Sour grapes, shmower shmapes.
I'm not congratulating them as this would not even come close to happening if the situation was reversed.
The defense was impressive and I do hope this performance inspires Brandon to do a compare and contrast and demand some sort of change. This season has been frustrating on many levels but I think the worst has been seeing these douchebags have their best season ever.
Brandon should compare and contrast Dantonio at year 7 of his program, or at year 3. Because as noted earlier, at that point Dantonio was coming off a losing season and had a worse record than Hoke after 3 years.
I think I should just root for my school, CMU. No expectations, no hype. If they pull off an upset then it's the greatest thing ever. 2013 was worst season I've witnessed as a fan of UM. even more so than 2008. I knew MSU was going to be a force since Kirk Cousins' junior year and it's ridiculous seeing the two programs go opposite directions.
Shut up about recruits and the RR hangover. That crap has played itself out enough to drive a lifelong Michigan fan to say fuck you blue. This program is getting exactly what it is capable of right now. I am speaking of both MSU and Michigan. Unless Hoke develops the last two classes into respectable teams next year and the following, Michigan will be the little brother for the next ten to fifteen years. I am not a believer in Hoke or the old crotchety coordinators he has. This is going to be bad, real bad, very soon.
Congrats on joining the blog and immediately going into a rant.
Nobody just joined the blog today, for the first time, and put "manball" in his username.
And it's a familiar rant.
Um, the "Joined" date was 01/01/2014
And yes, I recognize this is not a novel rant style.
Seems like ever since I started lurking round these parts in about 2006 things started unravelling. I'm starting to think its me. Sorry guys. Wish I could quit but mgoblog is a helluva drug.
Even if you choose to congratulate them, do we really need a thread on them. I don't because most of their fans are extreme douchenozzles but I respect how other fans act towards teams. If you think it is necessary to have a 500 comment thread every time MSU does something good then why haven't we ever done the same for Meyer and his 24-0 start. This has to do with our indifference towards MSU around here.
This x 100. How can everyone choose to be so respectful to such a disrespectful fanbase? They've had a few good years sure. First time at rose bowl since 88. Meanwhile they try to remind us at every point that we haven't won a Natty Championship since 97. Seems rather ironic to me. Sure they've had a heck of a run and this year is no exception. But everytime i look at any MSU board, it's constant shit talking about Desmond Howard, the UM fanbase, and spiteful comments towards anyone and everyone that disagrees with them. That's why i find it hard to take my hat off to them. You try to give them credit and they just resort to childish banter.
These threads constantly get created as if people are trying to be friends with the fanbase of MSU. Is it really necessary to kiss spartan ass all the time? Do we need to publically acknowledge every time they do something positive? When the tables turn eventually, just as every team's success eventually does, they will not give you the same level of respect. So why bother? Sites like RCMB just use this material to feed their own ego, especially from mgoblog. They eat this shit up and use it to talk trash about how pathetic they think our fanbase is. And quite honestly, these type of threads are pathetic.
Exactly. As I said in an earlier post, if anyone ever read on RCMB what they think of Michigan fans, they wouldn't ever congratulate Staee on anything. They are the worst fan base I've ever seen.
Represent the entire fan base and are always the most respectful and well thought out group.
Why do you think Brian had to bring back voting on this very site?
The one thing I know is that their coaching staff out performs our staff. So their walk on LB played great! Odds are is they beat us again in EL. I just hope it is not another blow out win for them!
They deserve it! Their playing at a high level and if u want to put them back in their place, go out and beat themm! Dont sit thier and pray thier program falls apart
Jesus Christ, man. You are making your parents very sad.
The conference needed this win, but it sucks to see any rival have success when our program seems to be lacking direction, passion, and progress. I've been a fan of Brady Hoke from the moment he did his first press conference, but if this program has another season like this, then Dave Brandon needs cut him loose and hire someone who has legitimately shown the ability to build a program through recruitng AND player development. Hell if it came down to it, I would offer Jim Tressel the job.
Congrats to them. Hell of a team.
7 Stages of Grief...
1. SHOCK & DENIAL
2. PAIN & GUILT
3. ANGER & BARGAINING
5. THE UPWARD TURN
6. RECONSTRUCTION & WORKING THROUGH
7. ACCEPTANCE & HOPE
Why congratulate our rival? Their win did not help um at all. If it helps our conference, then it is our rival doing it not us. The trash they talk all year and about all sports does not deserve us giving them praise. They are trash and that should always be remembered. If you forget, go on Facebook or Twitter or listen to talk radio and you will be reminded quickly how they feel about um. Oh that's right, I'm sure msu was really cheering for mich basketball last year in national championship game, right?
We need to slap the slippery fish right in the gill hole! Happy time feed bag, frog face. Cement landing!
This. I'll be nicer towards them when their fanbase acts better towards us. Until then, they're dead to me.
Just wait until ThadMottasAGoblin comes on and tells us all how big of pussies we all are for acknowledging that MSU played well.
Just wait until I'm called a douchebag for not saying that Dantonio is the best thing since sliced bread, but with Ohio State or Notre Dame none of these threads ever show up. Kind of funny really when these holier than thou people ignore big Buckeye wins but are on everyone when they're not kissing MSU's ass.
Show me where anyone here said that Dantonio is the "greatest thing since sliced bread"? No one here is "kissing MSU's ass" as you so intelligently put it.
They played well and deserved to win. A good sport aknowledges that and moves on.
This entire thread one big Spartan ass-kissing thread. This is pathetic.
Yea it is embarassing. You'll probably see one of these threads the next time they beat us the next time with a bunch of posters going around to everyone who will not congratulate MSU for various reasons and call them dbags like they do to me and various other posters.
The difference is that we have historically considered Michigan State to be inferior. That's not the case with Ohio State. Ohio State is expected to win B1G championships and contend for national championships. Michigan State is not. Also, as I mentioned in my comment below, Miichigan State's success just accentuates how badly Michigan has underperformed lately. MSU has won 11 or more games in three of the last four seasons. When was the last time Michigan did that?
If Sparty had not beaten Urb and taken OSU out of national title contention, would we still be falling all over ourselves for the Rose Bowl today? I doubt it. It is like this is their reward for defeating Ohio State. If OSU was in the NC game, we wouldn't be so happy for Sparty, I am guessing. Would we congratulate OSU for a similar feat?
I'm glad Sparty won. It's good for the Conference. I'm sick as hell of hearing all this "B1G can't beat anyone good" chatter. And this over the top hate BS re: Sparty is for middle schoolers.
I want to beat them - and everyone else we play - but I could care less about their reputed attitude towards us. The MSU fans I know are just fine. Mark Hollis is a good AD, and Dantonio is a very good coach.
They're building a formidable program, and we need to accept the challenge and do better. Much better.
As far as I'm concerned, it's fitting that they kicked our butts after our AD was enough of a douchebag to do a "Go Blue" skywriter slogan over their stadium.
That was the most low-class, embarrassing thing I've ever seen the UM athletic department do, and Brandon should have been held accountable for it. Could you ever imagine Bo or Don Canham pulling a spoiled frat-boy stunt like that?
Time to clean the UM house, from the top down, and get back to building a better football program for Michigan.
Brandon, his minions, and Hoke & Co. need to go.
So we'll have a thread congratulating the Ohio state Buckeyes if they beat Clemson. Somehow I doubt that. If there isn't a big thread on Ohio State this friday then you're pretty much a hypocrite.
Funny how you Montucky Yooper can't move on until everyone on here has said what a great team MSU is. It ain't gonna happen. Not if they go 15-0 for the next 20 years. Not with their fanbase.
I've said it once, and I'll say it again: fuck them. Their douchebag of a coach took shots in the media at a player. Who else does that? That same douchebag would've rather seen Michigan lose to OSU despite the fact that a U of M victory would've given him his first Rose Bowl berth. What about the way he showed his ass at the coaches clinic a couple years back?
Remember the cheap shots and Denard's twisted helmet that he failed to admonish? What about them taking to Twitter to talk shit about Denard in a game that had no bearing on them whatsoever? How many Sparties openly cheered against Michigan in the Sugar Bowl and last year's NC, and bought App State t-shirts following The Horror ? Now we're kissing their ass because they won the Rose Bowl? Sheesh. Neg away if you all want; I'm a big boy, I can take it.
Whatever, I don't give a shit. Instead of hating on Sparty, maybe we should focus on how bad their success makes us look. We haven't won a B1G championship in ten years. We haven't won a Rose Bowl in over fifteen. That was also the last time we went undefeated in conference play. We've never won 11 games in three of four seasons. We've never won 13 games in a season. We haven't won three bowl games in a row since the 90's. We have yet to appear in the B1G title game, let alone win it. MSU pulled off all of those accomplishments, and they did it without signing top 10 recruiting classes like we love to brag about doing (as if recruiting rankings alone win games). And yet, we're the ones who look down our noses at Sparty and go around saying bullshit like "This is Michigan, fergodsakes" or whatever the fuck.
I hope Brady Hoke can't sleep tonight after watching that Rose Bowl. Something needs to light a fire under him and get it through his head that "This is Michigan" doesn't mean jack shit anymore.
Wow. That was tough to read, in a good way.
The futility is more than I'd thought.
and bowl appearances aren't limited to one for the political favorite of the B1G.
Sparty has never had a three year span with only 2 losses and 1 tie as the blemish.
You're talking about the seventies. I'm talking about now.
Going back to work tomorrow is going to suck with all the MSU fans talking shit all day/week/month/year!
Why did "we" need this win? So we can delude ourselves into thinking the B1G isn't a shitty conference when we and the rest of the country knows it is? He may be reviled here, but Meyer was right by saying the coaches in this conference need to step their game up in order to kill the national perception of the B1G, Hoke included.
I don't think it's a good thing in any way that state won the rose bowl. I'd rather have the continued bad perception of the big ten than in any way find joy that our in state rival just won the biggest game in their programs last fifty years.
This victory adds cred to the conference schedule next year and the games played this past season as well. This is important if but glacially important . Iowa's respectable loss does the same. Minnesota... not so much...
The beauty of yesterday was MSU > Stanford. It was a very nice football day. Meyer is not the standard this year - Dantonio is... and his game is up. Let's cut the Meyer talk until we see him play Clemson tomorrow. He had a chance to play for the championship and blew it. I don't see how that gives credence to the B1G.
This year... B1G > Pac12... let's eat and rejoice...
Nice win for them. Nice win for the conference. I only wish our D played with such an aggressive, attacking style.
I walked into the office and there's a poster up at the front that says "Meet the most dominant team in Big Ten conference history" and a list of scores/stats from each of their games, only Big Ten team to ever win all conference games by double digits, etc.
At the risk of sounding like I am fellating them, their defense is very, very good and I think the only teams that I would pick over them would be FSU or Alabama. That unit has a legitimate gripe that they are not in the national championship game.
only Big Ten team to ever win all conference games by double digits
Didn't know that. Yet another accomplishment by MSU that Michigan hasn't ever achieved. And yet, they're "little brother" and This is Michigan, fergodsakes.
Next season, it's B1G title with wins against both OSU and MSU or bust, as far as I'm concerned. Don't just say "This is Michigan", show us. Oh, the schedule is difficult? Tough. This is Michigan. If Hoke can't hack it here, he should be shown the door. I'm sick of hearing him spout off nonsense that he can't back up and then cluelessly act like nothing is wrong when his team underperforms.
The most dominate big ten team ever? The conference is at it's lowest point ever. They didn't play all of the top six teams in the league and they didn't win a national title. They aren't in my book.
Is denial a river in Ann Arbor? Has Michigan achieved anything remotely close to what MSU has achieved in the past 4 years? Does Michigan have any basis whatsoever for claiming that distinction at any point in the past 15 years?
The irony is that in trying to minimize "little brother's" accomplishments and refusing to give credit where credit is due, we're acting like "little brother". The tables truly have turned.
I know they had their offensive struggles early but its still super hard to believe this team loss to Notre Dame. That D on the other hand made cowards out of men all year.
... but I will give congrats to their players. It's okay to respect your rivals and when your rivals perform well and you beat them it makes winning all the better. I hope OSU wins for the B1G and we beat the hell out of both MSU and OSU next year. We need to surpass good teams. As much as it pains me to say this, I think Hoke needs 5 years. I was so disappointed with this year. If things do not improve, after 5 years then both Brandon and Hoke will have to answer for the poor performance. Winning fixes almost everything. ... [ed] oh, and when and if we move in another direction, can we then finally get an AD who actually knows something about football coaching rather than pizza (...and yes, I do know that Brandon played a game for Bo back in the day.)
Nope. Most teams don't give any credit to the other team and I like it that way. No NFL teams do, no SEC teams do, we don't with Ohio State, but apparently we're supposed to have extreme brotherly love for MSU.
They've been the better team on the field for five of the past six years. That has to change.
I say "Congrats" and move on.
Go Blue in 2014 and beyond.
Exactly what I expected from the UM fan base when reading through these comments - there are mixed feelings regarding MSU's success. Let me just say that if UM had just won the Rose Bowl, I think that there would be more hatred shown in comments on MSU's blogs than there is on this blog.
First, I appreciate the admiration (or whatever you would call it) y'all have shown. As a Spartan, this season was definitely a long time a comin'. In fact, during the John L years (*face slap*), I would have never expected something like this. I think Spartan Nation has finally had a taste of what it's like to be Big Brother, and I mean that with admiration.
Second, I hope MSU's win is seen as a win for the B1G. I wholeheartedly cheered for UM in its bowl game against K-State. Although, it was probably easier to do so because of the bowl game and surrounding circumstances - that is, it would have been more difficult to cheer for a UM victory in the Rose Bowl than in the BWW bowl. With that said, however, my loyalties are with the conference whenever our teams play against non-conference opponents (i.e. ACC/B1G challenge).
Similarly, (although, not totally analogous) it was tough to cheer for UM last year in basketball because of the feeling that your basketball program had finally caught up to MSU's (note: an argument could be made that the programs are equal with MSU having more recent success since the late 90s, UM success in the 80s and early 90s, and MSU success with Magic). Maybe it's this feeling that MSU's football program is finally on equal footing with UM's that is creating this animosity. Or, perhaps, it's just the nature of having two in-state "rival" universities. Whatever the cause, I know it's hard to cheer for the "other."
As to the future of both programs, I don't think UM has anything to worry about, even with MSU's "rise" to prominence (however long that may last). As a Spartan, I am envious of UM's football and sports history (we can't forget hockey - probably the most consistently dominant program the last two decades), UM's academics, the beautiful City of Ann Arbor, and the great culture and community accompanying the above.
It's easy to recruit when you have everything that UM has in place. I also don't believe that football in this state is necessarily a zero-sum game. Both programs can find success (although, one team has to win head-to-head). MSU and UM don't always target the same recruits. UM has a much more extensive recruiting reach than MSU, and that has everything to do with its brand and image. MSU has considerable catching up to do in this category, and one Rose Bowl win won't change this.
UM has the infrastructure, the money, the brand, and the will (no pun intended - Spartans Will) to continue to be an elite football program. It's easy to see MSU's recent success as a threat to UM's long-standing tradition and elite national status. But it's more than just a Rose Bowl win and three double digit win seasons the past four years. What creates and continues success is the infrastructure underlying the football program. Michigan has this. This won't change, and I'm jealous of UM in that respect. MSU is finally laying its foundation.
