Really gutsy performance.  That is all.

Joined today? Check. First post ever? Check. I highly doubt and Michigan fan would join only to refute my statement. I mean, you think I'm that dumb? Either that, or what does that say about you if you're a Michigan fan that decided to join based on what some random commenter said on a thread about Sparty? Why didn't you join earlier, when, you know, Michigan had games and such? Seems fishy...

Michigan didn't play today. So I'm on a Michigan blog discussing results of other important and relevant Big Ten games. It's not really irony, much like how Alanis wasn't really ironic (which really shows the true irony of the song). Wisconsin v MSU was easily the most relevant forum topic on the Blog here today. Because it had big implications on Michigan's chances to win the Big Ten.

A Sparty troll calling me ironic is the real irony. And my head just asploded from THAT.

The fact of the matter is that MSU should have won that game by multiple scores, but their offense had three 3 and outs in a row which led to Wisky's comeback. Then, when it should have gone into OT, Bret Bielema decides he wants to be gluttonous (big surprise there) and call a timeout on 3rd % 9 with under a minute to go. It wasn't an epic comeback rivalry game as the UM/ND game was. Not to mention, as I'm sure others have mentioned, the average college football fan couldn't care less about Sparty.

as some sort of internal validation for Michigan's loss last week.  Something along the lines of 'okay, they're pretty good team, we lost, now we can move on and win the next few games.'

But at the same time this will make it a lot more difficult for us to go to the BTCG. Damn.

That being said.  Congrats to State, thats huge win for those guys.

As hard as it is to admit, Michigan State is probably the best team in the Big 10 right now. Losing to them, in retrospect, should have been expected. Next year they'll be losing a large bunch of talent, so we'll get them then.

Second best. Still think UW is the best. MSU played great, but take away a derpy 2nd quarter by UW and they win. You can't always count on a blocked FG, blocked punt for TD, intentional grounding for a safety, and most impotently, a hail Mary to win. UW and MSU will meet again in Indy, and we'll find out then. I was really impressed with the no penalties by MSU though.

Bad end game management by Bret.  MSU played a decent game but nothing impressive (sorry i'm not being a homer I really just wasn't impressed).  Thought it was funny that the helmet to helmet call that took Ball out of the game wasn't called.  Just an observation it didn't look dirty to me or anything.  The last 10 seconds that refused to tick off from the second to last play made me laugh so hard.  It didn't effect (affect?) the game though they still had time for that last play but it still made me giggle.  MSU holds the legends division in their hands completly.  Congrats to them.  I won't be impressed until they beat Wisconsin on a neutral field in the B1G championship game which they really look like they will be there.  That is all.

Excellent observation.  The B1G has 0 chance of a national championship appearance now.  It's the damn SEC and BIG 12 and Oklahoma is already losing at half time.  Could be a possible BS sec only national championship (yes I know that is highly unlikely but you are going to hear about it for the rest of the year if Oklahoma loses).

Congrats, MSU. Insane game. I'm not happy with the outcome, but they capitalized on Wisconsin mistakes and got a couple bounces, which is what you always need to do to win football games. Hate to admit it, but they're a great team right now.

Refusing to give MSU any credit that they're actually good (when they clearly are) feels like the analogue to the MSU inferiority complex towards UM. It's annoying.

Wisconsin is a pretty good team. MSU just beat them, fluke or not. MSU therefore is also a good team. Is there something wrong with admitting this? I don't get it.

A great team is a national title contender.  MSU is not a MNC contender, not even close.  Anyone who has watched LSU or Alabama play would realize this.  If MSU played 'Bama it would be a repeat of last year's bowl blowout.  I'm not saying this because I hate Sparty (although I do) or because I love Alabama (I don't).  It's just the truth.

to give an explanation of greatness as applied to teams.   If I look up "light"  in order to understand what shoes are light, then the dictionary won't tell me that  only shoes that are less than 20lbs are light.  Yet, it's still true that any shoe that weighs over 20lbs is not light.

There may still be difficult cases, e.g. there may be shoes that are less than 20lbs that are still not light.  There might be some unreducible vaguness in the term "light shoe" such that for certain cases, like a 4.5lb shoe,  we just can't say whether it counts as a light shoe.   But none of this makes "light" somehow subjective.  Nor does it alter the fact that shoes have to be less than 20lbs to be light.

If an NCAA team is a great team, then it must be one of the best teams in the NCAA.  MSU is not and hence they are not great.    You can still call them " a great team", using whatever meaning you decide to give to "great", but your not speaking the same language as myself and the rest of English speakers.

If an NCAA team is a great team, then it must be one of the best teams in the NCAA

If this is how you define a great team, fine, good for you. But how do you define that anyway? "One of the best teams in the country" could simply mean Top 25, of which Sparty is more than assured. Or do you mean Top 5?

And your shoe example makes no sense. If I were a mouse, a 4.5 lb shoe would be extremely heavy to me. If I were an elephant, it would feel light as a feather. It's all relative, hence, all subjective.

I happen to feel that if you're in the top 25 and you beat a top 10 ranked team, you're probably one of the best teams in the country and deserve the word "great" as a descriptor. Does that mean that they could beat LSU or Alabama? Probably not. But that doesn't mean they're not a great team...it just means Alabama and LSU are better, and on a whole different level of greatness.

subjective. You realize that some term being subjective means it depends on the internal states of the speaker right? Simply because a term has different meanings in different contexts does not make it subjective, e.g. "now" has different meaning in different contexts but it's not subjective that it's sunny now in Ann Arbor. Wilt Chamberlain is tall, but he's not tall relative to a mountain. that doesn't make tallness subjective. Whether Wilt Chamberlain is tall is not dependent on my subjective state. It does have something to with the context in which were discussing tallness. To use your example, if we are talking about shoes for mice, then 4.5lbs is heavy regardless of what you think. If we are talking about shoes for people, then 20lbs is heavy, regardless of what I think. These terms are not subjective.

Sure MSU is great relative high school football teams, but that's not the context in which the remark was made. We're on a college sports blog, in fact a blog about a top 25 college football team. In this context MSU is not a great team. It's not like I said MSU is not great because they couldn't beat the 1985 Bears or the 1992 Dream Team. I was comparing them to other 2011 FBS teams. Further, I don't need to specify a particular cut-off point for "one of the best teams" (although I happen to 5 is about right) anymore than I need to define "bald" in terms of the number of hairs on a person's head before I can call Al Borges bald.

Using your reasoning, I there is nothing wrong with claiming that EMU is a great team. After all, they are better than some teams, and I just understand "great team" as a team that's better than 5 FBS teams. So EMU is a great team, even though teams like Michigan and Toledo are on whole different plane of greatness. Likewise, while most people thought Michigan played poorly against MSU, I can truthfully say they played great since they played well enough to beat EMU. Did you see the great defense Michigan had last year? They were great, it's just that other offenses were super duper great!

They are easily the best team in the Big Ten, unless Ohio St--- or Wisco--- errrrrrrr shit out of excuses. Yeah, best team in the Big Ten. Sparty plays NW and Iowa poorly, historically. You never know

I can't help but laugh at this point. How can you beat such devilry that is at work in East Lansing? They're having their day right now. Oh well, not much we can do til we beat them.

"How can you beat such devilry that is at work in East Lansing?"

I bet getting some priests to stand at the 50 yard line in Spartan Stadium and chant "THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!!" while flailing holy water would do the trick. Hey, gotta find some humor in all of this.

I still think Wisconsin will beat them on a neutral field, but you have to give credit to them. They are living a charmed life in E.L.

Nice use of your timeouts Bret.

Wisconsin is still almost a lock to win their division.  If we take care of business and win out, and Wisky plays Sparty in the Big 10 championship game, chances are Bucky gets revenge.  Perhaps a BCS at large bid for us.

Anyone who wasn't impressed by that game by MSU is by definition homer. They played an amazing game. I hate State as much as anyone else, but there's really nothing good about this. State is really a good team, Dantonio is really a good coach (if an asshole), the B1G sucks, Sparty No is not much of a meme anymore, and MSU is going to be playing in Indianapolis. MSU is a good team. They beat Ohio State on the road, made Michigan fans question if Denard Robinson should be a starting quarterback, and then beat Wisconsin tonight, which nobody ever expected.

Next year doesn't look that much better for us playing them. They lose a lot of talent on offense, but their defense is young and is still very good.

Things just suck. Fuck my life.
