Congrats to Shurna, thats a great accomplishment. It does feel like 6 years too. Kind of a poor mans Robbie Hummel.

Agreed. I always liked Shurna and the way he plays. No whining, just competition. He's really been the only reason Northwestern's won a single game the last 4 years.

Sometimes we like to acknowledge and pay due respect to opponents that deserve it. This is what separates the men from the Sparties.

It's been Shurna, Cobble, Thompson, and Crawford who have all helped NW get back to being a legitimate bball team. But Shurna has probably been the biggest contributor.
The thing about Shurna that blows me away is that as unorthodox as his shot is, it gets off so quickly that it is really hard to stop. I can actually see him having a pro career as he seems to work himself open for shots and is a lights out shooter and back to the basket player even when everyone is keying on him.
Congrats to him - hope he sucks it up against us but other than that it's been a pleasure to watch him play.
For some odd reason though as much as I like Shurna, I really can't stand Drew Crawford.

Let's be clear. They were never a legitimate basketball team. Ever. So if they are legit, this is completely new territory:
NU has never made the NCAA Tournament.
Think about that. There are only about 50 teams that have never competed in the tourney. And they arent from major conferences. They're teams like Hartford and Norfolk State. And the Utah Valley Wolverines.
I almost dont want them to make it to keep this insane non-accomplishment alive. It rivals Michigan's bowl streak (RIP) in impressiveness.
Sorry to be a little pedantic. I just love this bit of trivia.

It's going to be very hard to avoid a letdown game against Northwestern. They have a great team and could beat us by ten as easily as we could beat them.
I'm hoping they can find a way to make the NCAA field while still losing vs us.

Congrats to Shurna - always scared me when UM played NW, and I am happy to see him succeed. I'm still waiting for NW to figure out the right formula to compete for NCAA bids, but they look like they have some momentum.

Whenever I watched Shurna play I've often wondered how did Coach B let this one get away. It seems he'd be a perfect fit for the WVU offense and would've stepped right in when Pittznoggle left.
Wait, wait, wait. You mean Shurna is STILL at Northwestern? And he's playing? My God he's about to get tenure.

I live in Chicago and have really come to appreciate Northwestern sports. They aren't ever going to be us but always seem to get so much out of their players - I respect them a lot. Shurna has always been a favorite (I say always because it feels like he's been there forever!) because he doesn't get involved with all the crap and just competes. It's why I love Novak so much - just competes. Give me a team full of these type of guys and I'll take my chances against anyone.
