Congrats to Heiko

Submitted by Opinion25 on

Just heard that Heiko - the MD/PhD U-M student who wrote for MGoBlog during his PhD years - matched for urology at UC San Francisco. For those not familiar with the medical sciences, urology is exceptionally competitive and UCSF is elite (top 3 nationally).

Go Blue (and bubble screens)!

Addendum: Spelling error fixed

Mod-Heiko: Hey everyone, thanks so much for your kindness and support! I'm excited that I matched and have a new phase in life to look forward to. I'm so happy to have been a part of the MGoCommunity. It's one of the coolest things I've ever been a part of, and I'm going to miss it for sure. Anyway, I'll try to stay active on the blog as much as possible, and maybe when I'm done with training I'll get to come back to Ann Arbor!

Go blue!

This probably doesn't merit lengthy discussion, but since it's Friday. I think "gratz" lends less formality than the full "congratulations." The internet is causing some serious evolution of language. The generation growing up now is the first whose primary form of communication is written word and that comes with some new things that people don't want on their lawns.

I think what you're trying to get at is that nobody before 1997 or so ever "wrote" (a term I use loosely) to someone in a real-time conversation.  People used to write all the time.  All.  The.  Time.   But that was actual writing that they'd sit down to work on.  It's only in the last 20 years or so that people "write" to someone they could talk to but choose not to.  "Real time" writing - i.e., texting and IMing - got people trying to figure out how to save time.

Won't make penis jokes...won't make stereotypical Asians in San Francisco jokes...[breaths deeply/exhales]. Congrats! My sister did her post doc at UCSF; great school and great city. Good luck. Keep up the good fight on the bubble screens.
