Conference Tournament Results and Final Four Appearances

Deuce2Sports has posted a story looking at conference tournament results for past Final Four participants.  The concluding paragraph may provide some solace to Michigan fans:

So, the morel [sic] of the story is the expectations for your team in the NCAA Tournament should dictate how much stock you put into a conference tournament. If you think your team is a possible national champ then make sure it wins its first game. If the Final Four is your ceiling then don't sweat a conference tournament loss as much as the experts want you to.

This team is not going to the final four. Sorry, don't care about rankings and projections, they don't pass the eyeball test for me. They are falling apart late in the season because they struggle on defense, lack toughness and rebounding and their late game offense consists of Trey Burke going 1 v 5. It was nice to dream for a while, but I'm not upending furniture if they don't go far in the tournament.

Realistically we probably won our first round game. That's all though. Final Four is not even in consideration. In the tournament, even bad teams play good defense. We are standing firm with our stance on defense. Not doing it!! You can't make me!!! Beilien couldn't motivate a homeless person to get food stamps.

Does this loss hurt our seeding? No.

Does this loss count as a B1G loss? No.

Will Michigan still be seeded 3 (most likely)? Yes?

Okay cool.

Conference tournaments are only for teams that need them to get into the NCAA Tournament. We almost saw today a prime example of why they should be thrown out. Hardaway getting hurt.

Would I love another banner and have another trophy at Crisler? You bet your ass. But I'd rather have a full team going into the most important tournament.

Big waste of time conference tournaments are IMO.

I could care less about the conference tournament. However, it was still a game that we played. Therefore, I expect us to play well. Showing our lack of interior defense or offense, missed free throws, and lack of urgency for large portions if games....... Is a trend that I would have liked to end. At least now we are to the point of root like crazy, win and advance, lose and wait for spring game

This team's confidence is broken, Jmo couldn't catch a cold. Nik and Glenn are 2 years away from being leaders for this team. Poor Horford should be wearing a skirt when he plays.

The team may be able to go on a run because the rest of the field is not necessarily built like the Big Ten. The Big Ten is tough and massive.

Pac-12, SEC, and BIG-12 teams dont seem to be as big or tough (based on my casual basketball fanship)

That being said, we will continue to suck ass in the Big Ten as long as Coach B deems it necessary to field teams with a 6'8 - 5 and 6'6 -  4

One of the HUUUUUUGEEE reasons we suck terribly at defense is because we are fucking tiny and get bullied around. Compounded with a seeming lack of fight...well we have one hell of a defensive unit.

Coach B is a great coach, no doubt..but he is fielding some Rich Rod esque teams terms of size and physicality.

We were the #2 see last year, and lost to a team from the MAC. Sure the BIG is a tough conference, but that doesn't guarantee wins against lower ranked teams. I completely agree about size, but I think its more than that, its the lack of physicality and defense. All season we kept hearing how we avaraged the fewest amount of fouls, like that was a good thing. We had fewer fouls because we were not aggressive defensively. Fundementaly, our defense has GERG level flaws fundementally, and we won that way for a while because we could outscore other teams. Unfortunately Stauskas, GRIII and Hardaway Jr. can't score against teams that play good defense, and we come up short in these critical games.

So if the ball hanging on the rim would have fallen the other way and we split for the conference title with the probable top 1 seed in the country, would we still suck in the BIG? So, did the ball falling the wrong way turn us from conference champs (I know co) to sucking?

Losses are hard, but we need to keep some perspective. It is much better having these losses hurt because it takes us down to a 3-4 seed, then having it bust our bubble and head to the NIT.

Dude, we missed too many free throws and let them back in the game with less than 1 minute left. That is why we lost, not because the ball didn't fall in at the end.

I kind of doubt we'll make it out of the first weekend because we're young and soft. It is what it is..

And that's if we catch a break in the brackets. It's OK though. It's just part of the process.

It is interesting that the author puts it as he does. Let's take a look at a couple projected 1-4 seeds from TeamRankings as a brief example:

Seed Team Bid S16
1 Louisville (27-5) 100% 75%
1 Kansas (27-5) 100% 68%
2 Miami (FL) (24-6) 100% 51%
2 New Mexico (27-5) 100% 39%
3 Michigan (26-6) 100% 54%
3 Marquette (23-8) 100% 36%
4 Arizona (25-6) 100% 45%
4 UCLA (24-8) 100% 30%

For the projected Top 5 seeds, the trend is pretty similar if you go back through their simulated seasons for the last few years. In essence, if your expectations were the Sweet Sixteen, for example, and your team turns out to be a 1-4 seed, then for the most part, your expected probability of getting there is not bad at all.

The best part about the NCAA Tournament is anything can happen.

Two years ago all the talking heads and fans were wondering why the hell VCU got into the field over better, more qualified teams. They made the Final Four. This team could lose another 4-13 game or 3-14 game or win the whole thing. You just don't know.

Anyone who thinks this team is going to make it out of the first weekend is delusional. There is no chemistry on the team. There are rumors of fractures between some of the freshman after the Wisconsin game in Madison. I would take Nebraska over this overrated team.
