Conference bowl implications

Submitted by beastcoastinc on
I have a question, and I apologize if it's already been debated. I was listening to a radio show and many seem to believe that if OSU loses to Arkansas, then the Big 10 perceptions will continue to be "big and slow." Naturally I disagree, but which bowl games and results do you believe will have the most implications for MSM perception? I think even if MSU, PSU, Iowa, and Michigan win, but OSU loses, that the entire conference could get a bad wrap. Conversely if that happens, OSU might cease to becoem the "conference rep" in a sense and Tressel could end up with a lot of the blame as being unable to win the big game. Opinions?

I just loath MSU. UM can take care of image issues by scheduling and beating SEC teams. Historically, UM has done extremely well vs the SEC, so I am confident Michigan would do well.

I will root for every BT team besides MSU and OSU. There is too much animosity for me to cheer for a victory for either of those schools.

I used to root for MSU when we weren't playing them. I relied on contempt and condescension to deal with them, so I could be so happy for them whenever they beat some hafl-decent team. That's harder to go with nowadays.

At a certain point, I will even root against a team that's playing OSU, if it's a marquee matchup and perception of conference strength could help Michigan. If perception will help Michigan get a BCS game, then I'm all for a team losing to OSU. I can never take much joy when it's just a rival losing to some other school.

Ok, I'm kidding. BUT... I have a hard time "rooting" for either MSU or OSU in their bowl games. I usually love to see them get their asses handed to them. And if they win then I take it as a positive for the Big Ten. The truth is that the Big Ten will have to win ALL of their bowl games against GREAT competition to get the respect of the media (ESPN mostly). And even then, they will probably just say, "Well, anyone can play ONE game with anyone else." Kind of crappy but whatever. I think the Big Ten will make a good name for itself this year. Lots of big wins that will either 1) PISS YOU OFF or 2) cause you to shrug and say, "well, at least the big ten got another one on the SEC," but you're still a bit pissed.

But what happens when (and this is the real problem people) Michigan State beats Alabama (could it happen?!) and then we have to listen to all the MSU fans talk about how awesome the team is and how badly they kicked Alabama's ass... even though they won on a last second field goal and there were several questionable calls against Alabama throughout the game?! That is my biggest fear. Ok, it's not. Man-eating bears are my biggest fear!

Were just Big East type wins??

Wins are all that matters. No one cared when FSU was ruling a crap ACC, or USC beating up on a weak Pac-10, over even OSU for awhile there when the Big Ten wasn't giving them much challenge. Win 10+ games every year, they'll think you're great, no matter who you're beating. Lose to a bunch of good in conference teams, and no one is going to give you credit for you tough schedule. Let them all lose but us.

Well, I don't think the Big Ten will ever get rid of the "Big and Slow" moniker as teams like Wisconsin and Michigan State pride themselves as being composed of beef, fat, and nothing more. But I mean, if the conference wins all but 1 maybe 2 bowl games, I don't see why the college football nation would consider the Big Ten as a bad conference.

I hope OSU loses. I don't even care if the conference receives a bad wrap. Conference appreciation be damned!

OSU will not determine the view of the conference. I would argue that this year, Wisco is more important. They are known as a beef machine, and are playing a team built on offensive innovation and speed. This game will go a long way towards shaping perception.

Not that OSU will be ignored, but one team - especially one that frequently loses its bowl games - will not shape the perception of the conference.

In the end, the conference's overall record is the most important thing (so long as we win 1 of the BCS games). If we go 4-2 or better, than the B10 will continue to regain respect.

but a lot of this started when OSU got housed in their NC losses to the SEC. Mich, PSu and Iowa all have winning records vs the SEC in bowls, so it's ridiculous to think that just cause OSU got exposed that the wrest of the conference is just as weak.

the "wrest" of the conference, save Illinois in 07, lost to OSU to send them to those NCGs so don't go blowing sunshine up your own ass for those years. OSU was the best team in the conference both years, it cannot be argued otherwise (try!), so if they were exposed, so was the entire conference.

"Frequently loses its bowl game"

totally bro. It's like they barely having a winning record in BCS games. Fucking losers. Jesus, under further examination, they have lost HALF of their past 6 bowl games including 1 NON BCS GAME. Mother of GOD, thank you for exposing OSU's ineptitude in bowls recently. Did you know they are 1-2 in BCS NC games? What an embarassment!

is the underdog in 7 of the 8 bowl games, with osu being the only favorite. If B1G only gets 2 or 3 wins in the bowls, the conference will be ridiculed (even though Vegas has B1G only winning one game).

For the conference to be sheltered from any media "shit-storm" I think B1G needs to go at least 4 - 4 in the bowls ... with 2 of the 3 11 - 1 teams winning.

so they will be protected from an all out assault if they lose.

What is really awful is that the MSU and PSU and Michigan games are all on at the same time !! Who came up with that ???

Osu is 0-9 against the Sec. They have been destroyed in the last two national championship games they have played in. I think they have to win a few more games against the Sec to shake their big and slow perception.

Sure OSU won a NC...BUT it took a mythical non call to win against a much superior Miami team! It seems that on the biggest stage OSU lays an egg and drags down the entire conference. This year will be no different other than MSU and possibly PSU joining them in the trash heap! As much as i like to see the Big Ten win bowl games there is NO WAY OSU is going to stop the Arkansas vertical game they dont have enough DBs to cover everyone. I predict Mallet will have the game of his life and even mention that his time at Michigan helped prepare him for his waxing OSU!! GO BLUE!! BEAT MISS ST!!

Ironically, OSU has the fast, athletic quarterback with a questionable arm and Arkansas has the pocket statue. Would an Arkansas win prove the superiority of the Big Ten model over the SEC model?

Michigan has definitely performed well against the SEC, I can't wait to go toe-to-toe with Miss St., but seeing as a good number of those victories came against Vanderbilt teams, our dominance over the conference is a tad misleading.

OSU's losses to previous SEC opponents had them going up against elite defenses in LSU and UF. Arkansas doesn't pose that kind of a threat and should be an easy matchup for OSU

Debating the perceptions and stereotypes of conferences is a useless discussion to have and ignores the within variation. The media outlets blow up these discussions to generate discussion and controversy and, ultimately, page clicks. But in the grand scheme of things, these perceptions don't mean anything. There is variation within every conference. It's a shame that these types of arguments fail to recognize that.

a rats about a conference. Thats how I shut off most of my co-workers that bring that crap to me. Then I ask them how did your team do this week end? (Ialready know cause I saw the score)

I'm a Michigan Fan and other than that I enjoy college football more than the NFL. I don't identify with a conference I never have. It seems to me that the only fans that have this affinity with conferences or at least it all seemed to start with fans of SEC teams and Big 12 teams. It really did not seem to catch on until the BCS.

I don't really give squat about what other fans Michigan fans included say about a conferences. Okay so OSU wins and Michigan loses their respective bowl games. Well, that'll cheer me up cause a Big Ten beat an SEC team. And o boy my team lost but my conference did good. Or say Michigan wins and the rest of those teams mentioned loses I'm happy as a lark that my team wins and don't reall give a penny about the others.

It just seems to this conference fandom crap is a foreign construct to me invented along with the BCS and people who are long time MS State, Ole Miss, Vandy Kentucky and the other frequent bottom dwellers in the SEC or Big 12. Just my opinion carry on I'll be in the area all-day.

That's how I really see MSU and OSU in bowl games. If they win; ok then, it helps the perception of the conference as a whole. If they lose; HA! I mean, what more need be said about that scenario?

I'm really Ok with whatever stereotypes that the media wants to say about the Big Ten as a conference, as long as ...OSU and MSU gets the snot kicked out of them

and MICHIGAN spanks Miss. State. (Please God)

Then let the media spew their crap, but I'll have a happy winter.
