My mistake, bro.

Still, I can't imagine why someone would voluntarily list their username with the words "Jim Tressel" in it when they don't root for OSU. Their join date doesn't even support that it's because he got fired. Maybe he'll explain it to me later, but it's not for me to judge his fandom based on his username.

People are acting like we got destroyed and were lucky to have a shot at the end.

We weren't perfect, but had the proper calls been made, we might have been tied or even up on that last drive, rather than hoping for a TD and 2-pt conversion, which is about what you'd expect against a decent team on the road.

My point is it shouldn't have mattered against Iowa. Michigan's offense could have been more effective, and should not have needed to rely on a few borderline PI calls against Iowa or Denard not fumbling the ball (BTW there's no question it was a fumble. The ground did not cause the fumble; Denard caused the fumble).

Michigan should have been able to move the football better against Iowa, but sacrificed too many downs with poor gameplanning and not putting the offense in a position to succeed against Iowa. This one's (mostly) on the offensive gameplan.

Admittedly, I'm too drunk to elaborate. Back to blacking out...

Running now, hanging out with friends later. I'll be fine.

We would fucking lose to Iowa, though. Jesus. Lets look back on this in 5 years and laugh as a RS Sophmore Shane Morris leads a National Title contender with a talented, experienced defense. The future is bright, we just have to take our medicine for now. 8-4 is probable, 9-3 possible, and 10-2 a glimpse, but existant. This offense is hot and cold - theres no way it will be cold for the rest of the year. Go Blue.

that was a TD grab. Clearly the last play was pass INT. Clearly the refs had terrible blown calls at the end of the game.

I dont care if the refs "fucked us" or not... WE fucked us... we played shitty ass football and didnt deserve to get the win at all.. they had control the entire game

This game is on dropped passes and pass interference no calls. And Denard needs to see a therapist.  There is a mental problem going on when you can put every pass on a dime in the last two drives and almost zero on target the rest of the game.

Did you notice the last two drives we weren't pulling that crap of taking Denard out at QB every third play to force him out of rhythm?

Our OC is who we thought he is.  Our DC is who we thought he is.  One we pulled away from the Ravens with a boatload of money and the good fortune of him having a new grandkid in Michigan and a close relationship with Hoke.  The other went from the SEC to the Mountain West, which is not a promotion, folks.

We really didn't do ourselves any favors today, either. DROPPED PASSES, miscues, etc...

I hate to say it, but I kinda miss certain aspects of RR's offense right about now. We've effectively eliminated half of Denard's skill set by dropping him 7 to 10 steps. Now defenses can concentrate on keeping him contained in the pocket and forcing him to throw 20+ yard passes (which are often erratic).

Not good play from the players, and not good play calling IMHO.

miss certain aspects?  I miss the almost the whole thing.  Denard is a perfect spread option QB who put up insane numbers last year.  This year he's the square peg getting crammed into the round hole. I claim our two losses are on Borges and his inability to make use of Robinson.

The first half was Hoke & Borges trying to turn the offense into Manball.  And it didn't work.

If Robinson is hurt ok I get it, handing the ball off to Toussaint a lot makes sense.  Otherwise WHY U NO USE BEST RUNNING QB IN COUNTRY?!

I'm happy that Hoke brought Mattison in, the defense looks vastly improved.  Borges.... not so much.

Also we were fucking ROBBED of a touchdown.  Ball in hand, knee down, that's a TD.

I don't understand.  Why the fuck wouldn't you roll out at least once? Especially on the fourth down since the clock was a non-factor at that point.  I don't get it Borges, I just don't!  The refs blew a couple blatant pass-interference calls, Hemmingway's amazing catch looked like a TD to me, but that doesn't hide the fact that Smith dropped the TD on third down.

I really don't feel any better now.

I had given up on the game after their last score.  And I felt calm and accepting about that.

But to actually come back and have that score that was a score on the play there where we scored get called a not score makes very bad things come from my mouth at a very loud volume.

Lots more booze than normal is required, and there is normally a whole lot to begin with.  Amy Winehouse, we may yet meet in person.

I actually liked how our offense looked in the second half. I think we can learn from this and move on. And to Michiganman 24 -- maybe this is because I've been married too long, but one go round with the wife doesn't make me feel much better about a loss to fucking Iowa. Three years in a row.

How long does it take to realize your QB sucks balls passing the football? How long does it take to realize he has great running ability and can be somewhat effective passing in short controlled plays? How long does it take to realize he is death in the pocket???? Roll him out and give him the pass/run option right???????? UM does not have a QB that can make routine throws, this must change before the program starts winning games against teams with a pulse, Denard is not that QB.

I am blaming it on the refs.  Clear visual evidence showed Hemingway had possession of the ball and his knee was down.  It's OBVIOUS.  And then the no-call on Roundtree, again, OBVIOUS.  Do we get the two-point conversion if we score?  We don't know that, but the chance was taken out of their hands by the refs.  It's very disappointing.

November 5th, 2011 at 3:55 PM ^

This isn't the NFL.  That is a TD in college football as long as you can conclude Hemingway had possession of the football, which I believe is arguable.  The fact that it was called incomplete on the field was the difference.  That doesn't get overturned if it was called a catch initially.

We played like shit for most of the game and still had a chance to win.  This is much different from the past few years folks.  Take solace in that.  Also, continue drinking heavily.  I know that  I will be...

Even though I am disgusted again with Borges (Debord) with his horrible game plan for the road, the officiating was brutal.  There is no excuse, Hemmingway scored a TD he had possession and his knee was down the replay clearly showed it.  Roundtree was absolutely molested, either Hoke or pizza man better say something or else it will be a shame, the Big Ten officiating has been brutal.  Hoke better take control of this thing, there is no reason we should not be running a no huddle offense all the time to take opponents out of their offensive game plan.  I thought we complained about Rich Rod doing this same sort of thing in his first year, well Borges is doing the same with a very talented offense.

They played horrible.  There was no sense of urgency until the final drive.  This team was not ready to play.  The play calling was abysmal.  Does Devin Gardner learn anything in practice?  Iowa is not, I repeat, NOT that good.  I'm gonna scream.  This is on Brady Hoke.

Stupid refs don't know what fucking pass interference looks like.

Clock management is hiding somewhere far, far away.

Borges, why go deep every time we throw it? Your play calling makes no sense. Why finally go to the shotgun in the 4th quarter? Why not the third? Manball worked in the 1st, it kind of worked in the second, it didn't work in the 3rd. Go to shotgun earlier!!! The offense worries me more than the defense. WE HAVE DENARD. That should not happen. AND YOUR 2 QB OFFENSE DOES NOT WORK. STOP IT. Where were the screens? The option? Stop being so damn conservative when we need to score.

Kirk, why do you decide to go all not conservative when you play us? Fuck you.

Gardner. To all you people who want Gardner over Denard. Leave. Don't come back. Gardner is not ready yet. He has happy feet, doesn't make good decisions, and has shown absolutely nothing to make it look like he's the better QB.

Injuries. We always have injuries at the worst time. I hate you angry Michigan hating gods.

And fuck you Spielman and ESPN. If you show me Spielman's face again, with 2 minutes left in a game like that, I will smash my tv to pieces.

Borges is killing us!!! I bust my ass 60 hrs a week to look forward to this on saturday just to have a guy who is "too smart" to take advice, ruin an oppurtunity to score points. I can't take this much longer. Isn't there a chain of command down on the field to superceed any of his dumb play calls??? Nevermind that the refs allowed the fans to dictate the penalties and passer interferences. That is the least of our worries. Passining with D-rob within Iowa's ten yard line is enough evidence to see that there is a major flaw in our offensive strategy and structure. If this continues we won't win another game till Akron 2012.

We get screwed twice by the refs and instant replay, denard didn't fumble by techinical rule, denard forgot how to scramble on passes, borges is far from gorgeous, and liveblog discussion consisted of either not allowing comments through or about the mods and why the mods are mods. (which were terrible today)

P.S. I typed this and then had to retype because i hit F5...

I think Hemingway's touchdown was incorrectly called, but I can see how they saw it.  Unfortunately the real issue today was  Michigan needed a pocket passer with accuracy.  Denard Robinson is a great person and an amazing athlete.  But, he is not an accurate passer.  He overthrew at least four passes to open receivers and that inability to throw the ball deep with touch cost them the game today.

The lack of a running game is evident as well, but it's obvious that this offense needs a QB that can pass the ball down the field accurately.  Robinson struggles with accuracy and it has been an issue since he was a freshman.

Yes, he mangaed drives well late iun the game to get in position for a touchdown, but missing open receivers was the biggest problem today.

The next three weeks are going to be a huge struggle if the offense cannot get into a rhythm.

I am totally against having Devin Gardner come in to play QB unless Denard is hurt.  It throws off the rhytm of the offense and there is no surprise or mis-direction that gives us an advantage.

I'm pissed about the loss and frustrated, but if we had better execution on offense we could have won that game.

He missed some deep balls - which he always has done, and yes it's a problem. But for the most part I thought he looked the part of a pocket passer - poised in the pocket, going through his progressions, making the right reads. His biggest problems were a) deep balls, b) terrible PI no-calls, c) being short and having his passes batted, d) watching his receivers drop it. And yes that fumble was terrible too.

B is not a long term problem, D is not something a QB can fix. A and C may be helped by a tall,  pocket passer, but I think C can probably be solved with a bit of coaching on how to find your throwing lanes or something to that effect. His only major problem is deep balls. I think at this point in his career, it's probably too much to hope for him to solve that.

But when he ran the stretch plays later in the game, all of a sudden a ton of underneath passes opened up. Iowa played well defensively, we missed a ton of opportunities, and Borges wasn't so gorgeous. Denard didn't have a great game, but it wasn't all that bad of one either.

we need our quarterback who is tremendous at running and did very well last year in a short passing game to run and throw short passes?

That is all play calling.  You want to match the quarterback to the OC.  As we learned in Recent Michigan Football History (2008), that's not happening this year.

I love Denard, and he is an amazing athlete, but Denard will never take you to the promised land.  He simply does not have the accuracy and consistency as a passer to win the big games.  Until we get a true pro-style QB (hello Shane Morris), we will flounder against blue chip competitors.  I am totally against putting Devin in for the rest of the season, but Hoke should keep all options open for next year.
