On complaining about Coaching

Submitted by ituralde on

Everyone knows the past two weeks haven't been pretty.

There are lots of reasons why.

One of them may or may not be coaching.

I think its a worthwhile question as to when we should legitimately start holding the coaching in whole and in part accountable for what is going on.

HOWEVER

No matter what, we have this coaching through this season, for better or for worse. Dave Brandon is a competent businessman, he's going to be considering all options, so no matter how things turn out, this guy will be prepared.

SO

I might reccomend that we hold off on discussion as per the quality of our coaching staff until the end of the season. By all means, arguing decisions made by our coaching staff is completely legitimate, but extending that to calling for the heads of our coaching staff is premature.

Case in point: If we go 10-2 nobody here will complain.

However, if we go 5-7 obviously it would be a different story.

IN CONSIDERING THE ABOVE,

Please remember that the season is at least 12 games long, and a very critical 5 of those have yet to be played. Ultimately you can't judge a Michigan coach's season until he's played Ohio State anyhow, so give it until then before calling for his head.

AT THAT POINT, HOWEVER,

As coach of this team, Rich Rodriguez and by extension, all his staff, should be held completely responsible for every aspect of this season, for better or for worse. At that point, we should remember that we are Michigan, and while bad stuff has happened to us this season, we should hold our coaching staff to Michigan standards in accordance with the situation. We should have Michigan expectations of this team, and I think there are certain things we need to see, given that, to evaluate how well this staff has done with the program at the end of the season.

That's all.

TL:DR - Stop calling for our coaches' head while we still have a bye week and 5 games of football to be played.

Rich Rod will be here at least through 2012. DB is a smart man and I don't really think he wants to go be going through another rebuilding stage with a night game versus ND next year and a nationally televised game against Bama.

When is the next one of these fire the coach/dont fire the coach posts scheduled to go up? Are they on the hour or the half hour? I forget.

What is the basis for that statement? 5-2 with wins over primarily inferior opponents is hardly impressive.

4-15 in Big Ten play, 13-18 overall, the worst season in Michigan history, the two worst defenses in Michigan history,0-3 vs MSU..., what set of facts lead you to the conclusion that these are "solid coaches"?

Football is a results oriented business and thus far the results have not been good.

I won't say "Fire him now!", but I will say that these coaches have a lot to prove.

That's what ND fans were saying about Charlie Weis for five years. Jus' sayin'... and that's as an alumni and RR supporter. I hope that we don't end up in the same situation, truly.

EDIT - I understand that Weis came from the NFL, etc. to a very different college atmosphere while RR has proven success at the college level. This is just an observation.

RR proved it in a weak big east. he didnt have as much success there when it was actually a descent conference (with miami, vtech, bc). he would be a great coach if michigan played in the mac.

go look at his record the last 3 seasons. they look great at 11 -1 and 10-2. but aside from that win against georgia, he beat no one. and he lost to the few top 10 teams he played.

"He can flat-out coach" should be revised to "He can coach (offense)." The parallels to Weis are a valid point--Weis was fired because he could never get the defensive side of the ball together.

ultimately wins and losses will have something to say about accountability. Wins and losses held in the perspective and context of what this team is. A gang of young kids with varying levels of talent, largely lacking in game time experience. But, to ignore that is merely a reflection of the type of fan you choose to be. a pragmatisit a realist or a front runner ego driven, i want my gratification right now type of fan. And I say that with all due respect.

Im as eager as the next fan to see a top 10 program, however I think the Special teams do need some serious attention (coaching wise). Iowa had 29 Seniors on their team (perfect example of few mental errors on their part). You can't coach experience and once the defense "grows up" i think we should see immediate improvement. I like the coaching staffs ability to get sleepers, but once we start winning big games top recruits should follow.

great coaches (and that is what we should expect at michigan) make their players play better than what they might be. that is what defines them as great coaches. average coaches make their players play up to their abilities. below average coach make their players below their talent. and so on....

so STOP using the excuse that its not RR's fault, and that our players are just not that good. if this man is to take our program to another level, he has to make these players play better. he is not doing that. so STOP. enough excuses. we are MICHIGAN. we are not northwestern.

We lost to two top 12 teams. The second of which (Iowa) nearly everyone had penciled in as a loss prior to the season. The first loss was a toss-up game to most. So why are you freaking out? We are 5-2!

Everyone just needs to relax. If we lose to both Purdue and Illinois then freak out and let the vitriol spew. Until then, the majority of these discussions are really quite premature and excessive.

Okay, pay attention. The coaches don't throw interceptions, or blow coverage assignments. The coaches don't fail to fill holes in the defensive line. The coaches don't jump off sides or start falsely. The coaches don't drop balls or decelerate during a punt or kick off return. The coaches don't kick the ball out of bounds during kickoffs. The coaches don't miss field goals, The coaches don't grap face masks or kill drives due to personal foul violations. The coaches don't fumble the ball, drop the ball or let the ball lay after a blocked field goal.

The coaches spend most of their time trying to get 11 guys (kids) to work as a team while trying to teach them (in one week or less) how to analyze film, recognize a defense, or learn a variation of a new play or for that matter a new blocking assignment.

Certainly, there are several areas where the coaches may be held responsible; play selection, personel selection, etc. However, to place the blame for a poorly executed game or a loss on the coaches heads is in comparison to blaming your parents for your speeding ticket.

Pay attention. We are young but talented. The offense is doing things that noone in recent years has witnessed (400-600 yds per game). Mistakes will be made by the most experienced and best players at any given time, surely mistakes are to be expected by the younger players. These kids (18-20 yr olds) are holding their own against players 2-3 yrs older than them ( and considering the workout sessions, off season sessions, conditioning and weight lifting that takes place during these off seasons) should be accolated for their perserverance.

I have plenty of faith left in not only the athletes, but the coaches as well. They are steering them correctly. Growth takes time, you can't fight it. Each year will yield inprovement. This year has and by the end of next season we may very well be wondering why we were all so anxious in the first place.
