I wish that was all that needed to be said. You sir obviously have never been to Columbus on the Michigan/OSU game day...
Tennessee is not recruiting well just because they got 18 dudes
I wish that was all that needed to be said. You sir obviously have never been to Columbus on the Michigan/OSU game day...
Those viscious northwestern fans. Known to look at you like they make more money than you and stuff.
They're slowly draining your retirement account in the guise of "increasing shareholder value". Horrifying.
You are full of crap...Northwestern fans are amazingly nice. Hell, their stadium is usually a quarter full of UM fans...
The students are starting to get touchy there, calling us cheaters at the game last year. I know that's pretty harmless, but coming out of their mouths, it seemed like serious trash talk.
its really not that bad
We haven't won there in 12 years. I can only image absolute mayhem and macabre that will ensue if we pull of the win. Prayers and thoughts to those of us caught in that madness.
It really isn't. 10,000 Michigan fans come to Columbus for the game, and maybe one, through all hearsay, gets "assaulted." Not bad odds. People talk trash, your ears hear it, and you move on. Just like everywhere else.
"Just like everywhere else." No, not really. There is a reason every visting team thinks a visit to Columbus is the worst. How do you like being the most hated location by every other Big Ten team's visiting fans due to your unruly behavior? That the vote would ber unanimous? You problably like the expansion so that to can create a wider swath of people in the US that hate visting your stadium for a game.
Obviously not every OSU fan is an asshole, but the propensity for them is miuch higher than anywhere else in the Big Ten.
I've sat in your student section twice. It sucks. I've sat in PSU's student section. It was worse. Opposing fans get drunk and yell. That's just how it works.
Yeah it's not like anywhere else. I've been a lot of everywhere else, often as the away fan. Michigan State's student section is the next rudest place I've been and it still doesn't compare to the average tailgate you walk by in Columbus. It's certainly not everyone who gets assaulted or has their car damaged for having the wrong license plate or has beer thrown at them, but I've seen it personally and had it confirmed by too many others.
There are a lot of teams out there whose rivals say they're awful fans or they're the bad guys, and I'm sure we overplay how much those things apply to Ohio State on here because we're pretty biased and also the targets of a lot of that behavior. Maybe honestly it's a third of your fanbase that thinks this sort of thing is appropriate and a tenth that participates--those are still way larger numbers than among other fanbases. To as much of a degree as it can be said about a fanbase composed of millions and a college football program associated with one of the nation's best research institutions (that degree is not very large), Ohio State=the bad guys. Relativity is on your side, but somebody's gotta be the worst fanbase in the country and while I have a lot of respect for you personally, your fanbase has made a very strong case for itself to be that.
There is a lot, repeat A LOT, of assholes that are OSU fans. I just think a blog post acting like every human in Columbus is awful and you definitely will get assaulted if you go there is a bit much. Like, it's not Juarez down here.
Try to use small words that they will be more likely to understand....actually don't even try talking to them.
it is much safer in Columbus IF the Butteyes win. But Istill would rather be there after a Michigan win. To welcome Urban to the rivalry with a home loss would just give THE GAME the hype it deserves.
Come to Buffalo Wild Wings at Lane and High st before the game. Ill be the manager in a yellow shirt.
Patrick West? A MICHIGAN FAN?!
Go Blue, maybe I'll see you and Rick there.
haha, Go Blue, Ill be inside, Rick will be outside at the tailgate. Do I know you?
Haha Patrick, I kid around. I used to work for BWW and helped out on Lane for a few different games a couple years back. I think you had just started when I was around.
haha ok, I can never know enough Michigan fans living in cbus
I'm bringing a few in. Doors open at 9?
I'm loving this exchange
Please then, oh studious one, spare one posbang so that I might one day be able to express my love for other MGoExchanges.
409 more points and you get trusted
Sometimes I like commenting on these really long reply threads just to make a really narrow post box.
Don't make eye contact with them, they view it as a sign of aggression.
I would just wear neutral colors and not draw attention to myself.
Also Special Olympics of Columbus has a lot that only charges $10 that goes all to charity. Its near the corner of Dodridge and Olentangy. Its a secure lot and my friends and family run it.
But seriously, is this a trap? If not what time does it usually fill up?
haha, no its not a trap, they havent sold out parking since USC home game. My wife and brother in law park cars, even though they are buckeye fans, they could care less who parks there because it all goes to the organization.
Sounds great then, I'll definitely try to make it there.
That would be excellent. Do you have any more specific instruction to that site though? I'm looking at a map right now and I'm not seeing anything on sattelite that looks like what you're talking about near there. Searching for the location only yields two results that are on the other side of town.
EDIT: Think I found it.
Google Maps search gave me the state-wide HQ which is across town. A general search turned up that, which is right where you mentioned and a VERY good parking location for $10.
Very much appreciate the advice. Given your word on the people running it and the fact it is off to the side enough to be out of the way of passer-bys on the way to the stadium, that looks to be perfect and I will definitely go there. Thanks!
If your coming from the north take 315-s and get off the the ackerman exit, turn left and its the first left after olentangy. Its a ARC center. Hope that helps, its very close of the exit
Is it near Dodrige and Olentangy River Rd or Dodridge and Olentangy Trail? North, south, west, or east of the intersection? I do not know my way around at all, and I'd appreciate any help!
Don't drink too much. And practice not talking back. Don't take the bait of "Denard sucks", muck fichigan or anything like that.
I'll be there in my usual gameday gear, Michigan jersey and hat. I won't be obnoxious but wil be loud cheering.
it's been nice knowing you.
Long history...no problems.
Preed will be fine.
Park on West Campus--at corner of Woody Hayes--->Carmac and Kenny. Infinite parking, costs $10 or free if you have a WC or C permit vehicle available. There are buses to the stadium, or a ten-minute walk through ag campus, lots of trees and softball fields.
I WON AN INTRAMURAL CHAMPIONSHIP ON THOSE FIELDS YOU TALK ABOUT DAMMIT. But the walk is pretty nice, it's easier and faster to cut through the big taligating lots by Coffey Road Park and cross the footbridge on the west than it is to go down Woody Hayes and enter from the North.
I'll be making the trip down as well. Does anybody have any parking advice?
Wear Michigan gear at your own peril.
I was st the '06 game in all maize and blue and ill do the same on Saturday.
Wear Bobcats gear and chant "Beat Ohio" a lot. It won't help you survive but the looks you'll get will be priceless.
Always handy anytime you visit Columbus, and never wear any Michigan stuff into a restaurant, you can rest assured those OSU graduates working there will food poison you out of jealousy!
The Michigan Alumni Association Tailgate. You'd be amongst commoners.
Will there be parking at the Fawcett Center for the Michigan Alumni Association Tailgate? Or do you park somewhere else and walk to the tailgate?
Never heard of it.
My buddy had his tires slashed a few years back. Worth it to rent a car for the day.
My buddy had that happen to him too. Actually, it was somewhat lucky because the AAA guy checked out his car and found out that the gas cap area/gas tank had a bunch of stuff in it (paper, trash, etc). It could've been really dangerous for both his car and possibly himself.
I was down there for 1 vs. 2 with a few Ohio buddies. Somebody threw a full beer at me walking down state street. Luckily it missed, and one of my Ohio friends (who was a middle linebacker in high school) knocked the shit out of the guy.
It was probably a young Braxton Miller who threw the beer.
Go in all Maize n Blue man. I know Columbus is insufferable but don't let the people here get too far under your skin. My best advice would be not to get emotionally unraveled over verbal assault. It's going to happen. The worst thing you could do is entertain the asshats whose life depends on disparaging "scUM" fans. Don't give them the impulsive reaction they're looking for.
There's surprisingly enough UM fans here to make me wonder if some might be able to collaborate and rendezvous at "X" bar to watch the game. Strength in numbers would certainly deflect some of the unwarranted encounters one would experience as a visiting fan. I am sure I need no corroboration when I say there are zero UM bars/establishments in Ohio; particularly Columbus.
So, let us make one.
can anybody make this look good/ make it a shirt
Best I could do
Don't be an asshat, don't take the bait. They will talk shit, some more than others. Overall, their bark is much worse than their bite. I was kicked once, from behind, resulted in bit of a bruise. I always wear maize and blue, any Michigan fan should. Have fun! Go Blue.
If you don't mind walking 45 minutes, try parking near Upper Arlington high school. It is a long walk, but it is a safe, nice neighborhood.
You can park for free in Upper Arlington, the neighborhood west of the stadium. Then you can take a 1.5 mile walk to the game.
To get there take 315 South to Lane Ave and then turn right (going west). Then turn left onto Northstar Road (there is a Speedway, Chase, and Puzza Hut in the corner). Once you're going south on Northstar, you can turn right into any of the next 6 or so streets and park for free. The best streets to park on are Berkshire, Cardiff, Doone, Essex, Guilford, Genoble, and Barrington. It's a relatively nice neighborhood, so there's not a high likelihood that your car will get messed with.
From there, you can walk up the path that starts at Guilford and Northstar.
I live on Berkshire and will be waiting outside my house, just west of the corner of Berkshire and Northstar to meet up with fellow Michigan fans. I'll be leaving at 11:00 am.
All are welcome to meet and walk together.
You may want to hop on 42 south just south of Delaware, then take that 5 or so miles to 257. Take 257 south and it turns into 33/Ruverside dr. Pretty drive and then you can turn left up into Upper Arlington. That's if you're freeway-averse.
in the Walking Dead. I think they carry a crossbow, axe and shotgun most of the time.
Hope you have a great time and be careful when M wins.
Smear the guts on those undead ohio fans all over yourself. Throws them off of your scent
Nobody fucks with you when you hang out with Amadou Ba.
But don't walk to the stadium down lane... Walk through the campus! Sounds so nuts... But it's a ghost town compared to lane ave
Much less abuse. But they are "paper tigers" those Ohio fans...
If you get fast food, always order it to go. Ohio charges sales tax on eat-in food, but not on carry-out. Order your fast food to go, then sit down at a table and eat it if you like; otherwise, those hard-earned few extra cents will help fund the state university system . . .
Like at McDonald's they charge you more to have ur food put on a tray and not into a paper bag? Seems kinda ass backwards, but then again it is ohlieo
Gotta love the fast food lobby
There are more taxes on dine in than carry out food at restaurants in Ohio.
On the drive into town, pick up a cheap Ohio hat/paraphenalia. It will feel disgusting, but just stick in in your winshield. Don't risk someone seeing a Mich license plate and doing something stupid to your car
During the game the girls seem to do a lot more talking than the guys. The best way to keep them quiet is to offer them some skoal.
I've had some bad experiences down there, but last time we parked at the Columbus Crew stadium and took the shuttle for $5.50 and it was a really easy experience. Lot was easy to get to because it's far enough from the campus that the traffic is not too bad. Shuttle dropped us off right near the stadium and it was an easy ride back to the lot after the game.
What a bunch of assholes. Be safe, Wolverines. Glad I'll be watching from safety of home.
deposit thing makes a big difference in AA. Dudes walking around with garbage bags can hear aluminum hit the concrete from a mile away. The only fights you see are territorial disputes over mineral rights.... lol.
It's like Mardi Gras. Columbus measure the success of a game in how many tons of garbage they collect, and how many miles away the urine can be smelled.
buckeye fan throws a beer at you the best thing you can be is the intended target. He will undoubtedly miss and hit one of his fellow assholes. It will be fucking hilarious.
I went in 2006. Wore the colors, cheered as loud as I could. Got lots of verbal abuse, but that's about it. Just make up your mind you're not going to react to that stuff. It was hard to not get into it at first, but after awhile they just sound like Charlie Brown's parents. I agree with others that have said C'bus is probably safer when the Buckeyes win, partly because the urge to talk smack after we win would be hard to resist, and removing the satisfied smile from my face would be impossible.
We did rent a car shortly after crossing into Ohio, so avoided the whole Michigan license plate = vandalism thing.
I've been to a lot of games in Columbus and taken my fair share of verbal abuse. Most of it is good fun but some is not. It can be very hard to differentiate so the best action is not to engage. If you are the sarcastic type (I am) this can be difficult. A noon start helps. The maniacs have a limited time to lube up.
I've never been to Columbus for a game, but I've heard it's actually the opposite - their fans become more subdued if we win, whereas if they win, the sociopaths get extra riled-up.
In 2006, the Buckeyes were on their best behavior the day after the death of Bo.
Won't be the case this year.
I'm pretty sure jingling keys or a Fake Eddie George sighting will get me out of the OSU mayhem. If that doesn't work just grab someone who looks like your sister and start making out with her...you'll fit right in.
Seriously though, I wear 2 jackets or sweatshirts into the game with my Michigan one on the outside. In the 4th quarter I switch them so my plain gray one is on the outside. Call me what you will but it's kept me alive.
Secondly, if we win, I treat it like when I win an argument with my wife...I keep it to myself until I am safely out of earshot. Good luck, god bless, and go blue.
watch from the comfort and safety of your couch. Why walk where the bear walks, poke the bear and then have to defend yourself because they lose. Bunch of neanderthals!
I live here in Ohio. Don't go.
Unless your idea of fun is getting swore at, having beer thrown at you and having to defend the occasional sucker punch thrown by a drunk. If that sounds like fun then by all means go.
I cannot possibly explain to people whose experience in attending games has occurred in AA that Columbus is NOTHING like what you're used to. Nothing.
A friend of mine who went to Texas attended the game here a few years ago. He could not believe how the fans behaved and that the police and security condoned it. His remark was "these people are animals". I simply said "welcome to my world."
Do not go.
Interestingly enough many Ohio fans believe the behavior at their stadium is reflective of EVERY stadium. My response has always been the same to my friends. I offer to take them to a MIchigan Ohio State game in Ann Arbor and I tell them I'll wear Ohio gear to the game and they can observe how I'm treated IF they'll where Michigan gear to a game in Columbus. At that point none of them want to take the deal.
Do not go.
I work in Toledo and am astounded when Bucknuts try to rationalize their insane behavior with the "it's this way everywhere" excuse.
It's not. Not at all. write it off as mass delusion as a defense mechanism against their subconscious acknowledgment that they are, in fact, bat-shit crazy and fringing on sociopathic.
Anyway, i am going. Got a sweet deal on tix and will be with a group of ten
Go Blue. Beat ohio
I think the best and most accurate portion of your post was the "they take pride in it" portion.
True story - on my last foray to Columbus (2002 game) we went with the same guys I tailgate with every Saturday at Michigan. A bunch of slighly overweight, good natured, quiet Dentists in their then late 50's. Not exactly a threatening bunch to say the least. As we were walking into the game with a ton of people some drunks behind us started making the typical OSU "Fuck Michigan, Ann Arbor is whore, Fuck you guys" type chants people here in Ohio think are witty. No response from us we kept walking and ignoring them. After listening to it for about 5-10 minutes one of our guys turned around and said "common guys - it's just a game...take it easy". That's it. Then we turned around and started walking again. About 30 seconds later - while standing at a light waiting to cross a street - in a large crowd of people - in FULL VIEW of a Policeman - my buddy got sucker-punched in the side of the head and went down hard. The cop stared at the entire event and did nothing. Nothing. The crowd around us did nothing (some laughed though). Once we got our guys back to his feet I went to the cop and was basically yelling "arent you going to DO anything? You just saw what happened!" His response? "You shouldn't have worn the shirt".
You want to go into that hell-hole and deal with that to watch a game? Have fun. I will never, ever go there again and would strongly advise anybody I care about to do the same. Until the city, the school and their idiot fanbase starts to realize it IS "just a game" it will be no fun for anybody to go. Unless you enjoy fighting -then by all means attend and have a great, great time.
I've never been to an LSU night game but most SEC fans are actually quite respectful of each other from my own experiences ( I'd image an Alabama - Auburn game gets pretty ugly, but the southern equivalent of Ohio is Alabama) I'd never go to a game in CBus, they're all truckers and frat guys.
Hilarious, but sad. The limit to their restraint is throwing AA batteries instead of C or D size. Unbelievable.
Follow the advice of the MTA:
Remain alert and have a safe day.
Dont forget your full body armor and assult rifle. It will be like going into battle.
Not sure if this is information anyone has, but here it goes. Does anyone know the hotel and arrival time if the team in the Columbus area? Living only 20 minutes from downtown I'd like to give them a great welcome this evening.
...call me a skeptic, but I'm wondering what kind of "great" welcome you and your nine MGoPoints are fixin' to offer. If it involves anything involving the letters "O-H", just....stop.
Yeah.... you and 20 pickup truck loads of sociopathic Buckeyes (redundant?). If anyone does have this information, don't post it.
Protect your cooler at all costs, also watch out for large buckets of pee that could be dunked on your head
Don't accept anything offered to you out of a cooler by an Ohio fan
of one of his trips to Ohio a year or two ago. It turned real ugly, but then again it is Ohio
Edit; I found it http://mgoblog.com/content/pride-buckeyes
I've been to Columbus twice - 1996 and 2006. I wore a Michigan sweatshirt both times. I kept my mouth shut and didn't draw attention to myself other than the shirt.
I was perfectly fine, nothing notable happened. A few people made comments along the line of "We're going to beat you". Someone may have said Michigan sucks. The OSU fans near me mostly joked about beating me up (yes, they were joking).
Everyone was too into the game to be into me.
You'll be fine if you're not an asshole.
"You'll be fine if you're not an asshole" is not necessarily true. You may have been in your situation, but in the last six years I have been sworn at directly in my face, followed and verbally harassed and have had partially full beer cans thrown at my car. I go out of my way to keep my mouth and be non-confrontational. I think you got lucky.
His 2006 experience is the exception. Bo had died the day before and all over the radio that afternoon and the morning of the game people were being admonished to be "on their best behavior" out of respect for him. Everyone I know that went (and I had about 20 guys who worked for me go) said it was unlike any game they had ever been to from a fan perspective.
I guess if you classify saying "common guys....it's just a game" as being an asshole then we were guilty as charged. That IS pretty inflamatory now that I think about it. My 59 year old Dentist friend was probably asking for it when he said such provocative words out loud.
It sounds like you're fine. If being sworn at and having a half empty beer thrown at your car is the worst that happened to you then you're fine. I've been hit with worse than that in the Michigan student section in Michigan Stadium.
I have seen plenty of games at the 'shoe. I have never had a problem. If you must wear Michigan stuff and are concerned wear it so that you can cover it up. Cover it up when outside the stadium. Ignore everyone that yells at you or wave and smile. Inside the stadium no one will do anything because no one wants to get kicked out. Just steer clear of obviously wasted morons. They're drunk. They are easy to avoid. Don't hang out outside the stadium after the game. My experience is, after the game just outside the stadium is when most of crazy stuff goes down.
It's not a warzone. Don't be an asshole and keep walking.
If you have Michigan plates, it's probably a good idea not to park on campus. Even if you have Ohio plates, you should probably still try and park off campus. Off campus, no one will give a shit.
Stay strong. We are all proud of you.
Columbus or Mogadishu?
Well my Wolverine friend, let me tell u like this....I live in Cols, and I love the Wolverines and I dont miss a game here in the Snake Pit, but this year they've taking things to another level..SERIOUSLY....Best advice watch it on TV!!!!!!! these folk are ready to do what ever, to WHOM EVER!!!!!!!! So for the first time in a long time I'll be watching it on TV....Good Luck and God Bless
As an Alum I can attest to the fact that UM fans get treated worse than any other fan base here. Here are some of my tips...
I can't say these are all the tips to having a good time in Columbus but its a start. Make the most of your experience and enjoy THE GAME.
I dove with sharks and hiked with Komodo dragons this summer and there were fewer precautions required.
All this "watch out or the Ohio fans will get you" is nonsense. Take any normal precaution one might take when going to an away game. Been there many times, besides some normal ribbing, never had a problem.
To All Suckeyes Posting the Hell Fire and Brimstone Warnings:
We've been to your stadium and arm pit of a town. It isn't the 7th circle of Hell like you want everyone to believe. So you've got random assholes who throw stuff and fight? Well, the thing about random assholes is they are everywhere, randomly. Including the Big House unfortunately. I'd accept the theory that there are a few more random assholes per capita in Columbus, but my opinion may be formed by other than fact. So quit with the propoganda. We'll go to your stadium in our colors, yell for our team, and then leave with the same number of arms/legs/digits/sensory organs as what we showed up with.
ohio is an open carry state.
makes me wanna drive down with my 9mm in a thigh holster wearing blue and wander up and down high street. haha
Since when does Maurice Clarett post on this board?
OK- so this year is marking my first ever trip to the horseshoe. I've traveled to many other stadiums in the B1G with Michigan, but scheduling never allowed for a trip to The Game. I'm heading down with a friend, but have NO idea where to park, where to walk (safely), etc... That being said, I am 6-8 and 290 pounds. I'm not a big slb either, I have a bodyfat % of about 11.5. That being said- anyone want to figure out a place we can meet up and head in safely? I feel pretty confident in defending myself, as I was also a police officer for 4 years- I just know the value of going in large groups. Hell, if anyone is planning on heading down bright and early, I'd even meet up and be good with following some other UM fans down.
I might be picking up a last minute ticket tonight and would also be going solo.
If you still want a co-pilot/driver (or anyone else does for that matter), I wouldn't mind splitting the gas and having someone else along for the ride.
Feel free to give me a shout at [email protected]
Like any other fanatical base the b(s)ucknuts. Keep a pleasant smile on your face, avoid eye contact, cheer as much as you safely believe you can and STOP at the signs of any B.S
This is a fan base that is 50% normal and 50% ---well, NOT. I has the misfortune to live in Gahanna, the S.W side of the city for 5 years. Age? 12-17. Place of birth. Ann Arbor Michigan. These people are delusional to the point of danger. That is a proven point. You're going to be surprised that an entire City can be so rude and classless over a Football team. Good luck, have fun, if we win---RUN;-)
I want to hear horror stories from those who made the trip and survived to tell their tale. This year, specifically.
