Columbus Dispatch Article on Hoke

Submitted by 991GT3 on

quotes DB saying that Hoke will be a Michgan coached for a long time. He likes the his recruiting and the coaching staff he has assembled.

I have no doubt DB means this and as long as he is AD Hoke will be the Michigan coach whether he beats OSU or MSU regularly or fails to win the B1G Champaionship. So the issue as to whether Hoke is on the hot seat is without merit.

Speaking strictly for myself, the problem isn't the article, although any number of similar articles have been written 'not in Columbus'. Any of them could have been cited, there is no new information presented. The real problem would be the ocular rectal inversion that prompted the OP to claim he can peer inside DB's mind.

Well...yeah.  DB is comfortable with Hoke.

But hopefully Schlissel cleans house sooner rather than later.

I'd like to see Warde Manuel get a crack at the AD gig.

Absolutely agree.  The only ways DB gets canned, as I see it, is some scanadal taints him, or else he personally pisses off the Regents sufficiently that they start leaning on Schissel and he just wants to avoid the irritation.   And, as a former regent himself, I suspect DB knows how to avoid the latter.

Annoying as some of his decisions and initiatives are, Brandon is perfectly competant on the business end, and Schissel, given his apparent priorities, is probably satisfied to just have the athletic department not be a distraction.

There was this one time or maybe it was the other time.  I cant really remember now but anyways it was AMAZING and seemed like it went on and on and on and on.  I mean if you didn't know better (and I do know better - TRUST me) then I would just think it was a fake - you know what I mean?

Anyways before it ended or maybe just before it ended it ended.  I mean to say IT ENDED.

And so it did.

I will guarantee you that if by the end of next year, we still can't beat MSU and OSU (at home mind you), have no opportunity to win the big ten, and have a middling big ten record that Hoke will be a serious candidate to be fired. That's 5 years of failure by Brady Hoke standards.

The major factor that will drive the decision is who's available to replace Hoke.

The point being, DB will certainly pull the trigger to fire Hoke if the time comes and the circumstances require it.

Serious post or not, I agreed with that sentence. But mostly because Brandon hasn't proven his worth as an AD to have any shot of making a second head FB coach hire.

What do David McWillliams and John Mackovic have in common?  They were both hired as head football coaches and fired by former Texas Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds, who held the position for 33 years in Austin.

For the record, McWilliams went 7-5 in this first season, had two losing seasons, went 10-2 in his fourth year and ended his career with another ending season.  Mackovic's final record at Texas was 41-28-2 before Dodds fire him.  Mack Brown took over after that back in 1998 and did very well at UT until he (and Dodds) were eased out last year.

I use Dodds as an example for those individuals who feel that Brandon won't be in a position to hire a second head football coach if he feels that Hoke needs to be replaced.  People seem to forget that while football is the main driver in any athletic department, hiring and firing the head coach isn't the AD's primary job.

What makes people like Dodds and Brandon successful as ADs is that they're able to raise lots of money and keep their departments solvent.  Per a radio interview with Brandon I heard a few days ago, Michigan has raised half of the $355M for the renovations, etc. for the non-revenue sports.  If he's able to continue with that effort and execute the plan he has for renovating and upgrading the athletic campus, then no one is going to fire him because Brady Hoke ended up winning 65 to 70% of his games while Michigan's head coach.

is written in the tone that suits its primary audience. Basically the story outlines all the reasons why Hoke might be on the hot seat even if Brandon suggests othewise, and uses all the negative stats available to present why inspite of official denials, we shouldn't believe Hoke must win.

But if this isn't true, because you don't like the source of the story or where its playing, ti's hard to claim that the facts are wrong or that the sentiment expressed isn't being felt here.

I mean its arrogant in tone and simply plays up the Buckeye message that OSU has been kicking Michigan ass and the likelihood is it will continue to do so, so that Hoke is indeed a goner. That's my take on it. And, for the most part, people here think that unless this team wins and starts turning the corner on beating its rivals that Hoke's future is in doubt, even if all the right people keep claiming otherwise.

This is the kind of story, that just makes you want Michgan and its team to take notice of, post  and use it for emotional fuel. Look there are two games on this calendar that I want more than any other, and it ain't a date in South Bend.

Hoke will be on the hot seat, and odds are looking for a new OL coach, if we win 7 games again. DB has faith in Hoke, but he still needs to make changes if things don't start improving.

Supposed Heisman-candidate QB out for season with shoulder injury.

Stud RB gone to NFL.

Near all-senior OL flushed to the NFL.

Shoddy defensive play except for Shazier (see also, NFL) last season.

The super puffy schedule aids them but in any kind of a normal year it could be Meyer seeking more family time.  I think he's good enough at recruiting and coaching offense to slip past that but I also don't foresee 24 straight wins in a row either.  Meyer could also land in the NFL...

Wouldn't fire Hoke if he ends up being only mediocre is rediculous.  Hoke might get a longer leash than some others, but if he goes another 2-3 years with 7/8 wins and routine losses to MSU/OSU, Brandon will let him go.  He faces the same pressures every AD before him did, and not just from the university president.

Brandon has never said Hoke will be his coach "no matter what," all he's ever said is that, essentially, firing him will never be an issue because he fully expects that Hoke will be successful... which, DUH, what else would he say.

We all know full well that "successful" at Michigan means contending for a league title virtually every year and beating your chief rivals consistently.  That will generally put us in the national title picture regularly.  If Hoke isn't acheiving that within the next season or two, he's gone.

that the story on the OSU marching band's sexcapades has gone cold?  Apparently there's nothing to scoop in Columbus other than an at will employer's firing of an employee who didn't meet expectations.

This poster, 991GT3 has been masquerading as a UM fan  to stir up negative discussion.  He has previously demonstrated support for Ohio State and Urban Meyer; he has called UM mediocre and likely to fail.  Now, with an astonishingly short memory for his repeated prior posts that try to set Hoke up for the chopping block, he claims to support Hoke.  But the fact that he quotes the local Ohio State newspaper betrays his allegiance and intent  He is just trying to stir the pot and stimulate more hot seat discussion.

Just read a few of  991GT3’s posts:

Negative comments about Hoke

“ If Hoke has a similar season to last year, DB has a hug decision to make….To give Hoke another five year contract after a 7-6 or 8-5 season with no B1G championship will indicate the program is accepting mediocrity. “

991GT3 says that if this year is “average or below average some recruits will begin to reevaluate since at that point the entire coaching staff will have tenuous job security.”

Why wasn’t Hoke all over this.  This raises serious questions about the coaching staff.”

If Saban coached this team, ten wins would be realistic.”

991GT3 seems to lie when he says: “I desparately (sic) want (Hoke) to succeed.”  But this lie is only to set him up, as 991GT3 next says: “He now has his horses and it is up to him and his staff to get the job done. No excuses.”

Support for Ohio State and Urban Meyer

991GT3 occasionally slips and reveals that he is disappointed in the loss of Braxton miller and are rooting for the new Oh St QB: “I would have preferred to play him early in the season. He will get better but is no BM.”

In a thread on Urban Meyer’s negative recruiting of UM, you defend Meyer: “all this negative talk about Michigan is a direct result of its on field performance. No one will argue the fact the the program is on a downward trajectory and unless there is miraculous turn around this season the criticisims of the program will only grow”

Negative comments about the UM program

991GT3 argues: “The rankings do matter.  They are indicative of how far Michigan football has fallen…those in the "know" (say) Michigan football is at best mediocre…If anything we have regressed and I am not optimistic about a quick turn around.

991GT3 suggests that the program is trending downward, and many of the ticketholders may “just jump ship.”

only reminded me about the sad state of MIchigan football. Viewing the NFL numbersonly reminded me about the sad state of MIchigan football.

Given these comments, one has to question the sincerity of 991GT3’s advice: “Using Peppers on special teams would not be wise.”
